WELCOME Thank you for being here! We so appreciate your willingness to give your time today. We work for American Refugee Committee, a humanitarian organization that’s responded to emergencies around the world for close to 40 years. We mainly work in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, but have recently launched a new program working to amplify the work of Catholic Nuns in El Salvador. We’ve seen their closeness to communities, their kindness – and their impact. Over the past week, we’ve had a team in Tijuana assessing how we might respond to the migrant crisis. We see the biggest gaps as being someone showing up with love, compassion, and patience as families arrive and find their way at the shelter where migrants are staying. There’s a huge amount of trauma, confusion, and built up sadness that accompanies each person, and sometimes they just need someone to tell their story to. To sit with them and hold their hand. Today’s work will be a test. We’re asking the question – What if we mobilized a group of volunteers, trained and inspired by the Sisters, to show up for these families and individuals right when they need it most? To just be there to talk, give love, answer questions if they can, and be with them for a while?
OUR GUIDING STARS Our inspiration? Catholic Sisters. Catholic Sisters have a super power. They bring to the table something that’s missing in so many humanitarian responses – love. Kindness. Patience. Empathy. Comfort. They don’t come with an agenda or ego. They’re unafraid to hold someone’s hand, to simply sit and listen to their story. This isn’t about religion. But it is about spirituality. It’s about nourishing their spirit – and yours too. It’s about showing up with love and light for someone who has lost it. Essentially, we’re seeing that what we need in this crisis is that “Sister” super power we so admire.
SHOWING UP WITH LOVE We will be serving at El Barretal , the site where the migrants in the caravan are now staying as they await to be processed. Your job is to just talk with people. Ask their stories. Sometimes people will come up to you. Sometimes you may approach them and make conversation. If you feel like you can answer a question they have, please do. Be their guide when no one else is. But be mindful to not ask any questions you do not know the answer to. Sit. Listen. Ask gentle questions. Be patient. Be loving. Hold people’s hands. Listen to their stories if they want to share. Remind them that they are loved and that people care about them. Your only objective is to be a loving, patient presence. First and foremost see the person in front of you. But allow yourself to feel the power of what you’re doing. How might this interaction benefit you too? Awaken and nourish your own spirit with conversation. Remember – What Would a Sister Do? Our interactions with people will be Sister-inspired. We’re channeling the Sisters’ power, love, and compassion.
