PARENTERAL MEDICATION

Is the introduction of a small amount of solution by means of syringe and needle into a loose tissue under the skin. ACTION SYSTEMIC EFFECT SUBCUTANEOUS HYPODERMIC

Purposes: To secure rapid absorption of the drug To prevent destruction of the drug by action of digestive secretion enzymes To administer drug when patient cannot take it by mouth.

Action : Systemic effect Sustained effect; absorbed mainly through capillaries. Usually slower in onset that with the IM route. Used for small amount of non-irritating, water-soluble drugs.

Site: Locations for subcutaneous injection is chosen for adequate fat-pad size. Anterior thigh/lateral thigh Subscapular region/upper back Lateral arms/deltoid Fatty part of the abdomen

Site: Upper hip Dorsogluteal area/upper ventral area

Needle: At 45 degree angle (5/8”); 90 degree angle (1/2”)

Needle: Needle gauge 25 – 27, ½ - 5/8 length Syringe 1 – 3 ml

Needle: For thin patients: 45 degree angle For obese patient: 90 degree angle

Observe general principles of giving medicines Report immediately any untoward effect of the drug GENERAL CONSIDERATION
