5. The skin is the largest organ of the body, with a total area of about 20 square feet

Skin has three layers: The epidermis , the outermost layer of skin, provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone. -CORTEX The dermis , beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands .-CEREBELLUM The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis) is made of fat and connective tissue . 7. Human skin is only about 0.07 inches (2 mm) thick . Skin is made up of two layers that cover a third fatty layer. The outer layer is called the epidermis ; it is a tough protective layer that contains melanin (which protects against the rays of the sun and gives the skin its color).

8. The largest internal organ is the liver . It is also the heaviest organ, with an average of 1.6 kilograms (3.5 pounds). The largest external organ, which is also the largest organ in general, is the skin.

17. Skin color -a pigment -melanin -controlled by at least 6 genes. Both light and dark complexioned people have melanin. T wo forms - -pheomelanin -red to yellow in color, and eumelanin -dark brown to black .

18. Skin pigmentation disorders affect the color of your skin. Your skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin. Special cells in the skin make melanin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production.
