ETHICS

INTRODUCTION Ethics is derived from Greek word “ethos / ethikos” which refers to character , guiding beliefs, standards or ideals that include a group , community or people. Ethics is that branch of philosophy which is concerned with moral human character and conduct.

Definitions According to Webster , “ Ethics is the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligations.” According to Peter F. Drucker , “ There is only one ethics, one set of rules of morality, one code : that of individual behavior in which the same rules apply to everyone like”.

Important terms used in Ethics Morality :- Principles concerning what is good and bad or right and wrong behavior. Morals  are formed from the inborn  values .  Moral  is a system of beliefs that is taught for deciding good or bad E.G Always tell the truth Have Courage Keep your promises Values :- values  are personal beliefs or something that comes from within. Values describe the personal qualities we choose to guide our actions; the sort of person we want to be; the manner in which we treat ourselves and others, and our interaction with the world around us. They provide the general guidelines for conduct.

E.G. Honesty Optimism Respect Sportsmanship Open Mindness Code of Conduct :- A code of conduct is a set of rules outlining the norms, rules, and responsibilities or proper practices of an individual party or an organization. E.G A  code of conduct example  would be a rule expressly prohibiting accepting or offering bribes. - I will not participate in any drug or tobacco use - I will take action to help a person in need if I see their need and am capable of making the situation better.

Keep your promises Honesty Don’t accept bribe Help Others

VALUES MORALS ETHICS Values are the foundation of an individual person’s ability to judge between right and wrong. Values include a deep-rooted system of beliefs that guide a person’s decisions. They form a personal, individual foundation that influences a particular person’s behavior. Morals are the system of beliefs that emerge out of core values. Morals are specific and context-driven rules that govern a person’s desire to be good. They can be shared by a larger population, but a person's moral code may differ from others' depending on their personal values. morals are concerned with individuals feeling "good" or "bad," ethics determine what behaviors are "right" or "wrong." Ethics dictate what practical behaviors are allowed, while morals reflect our intentions. Consider morals as the rulebook and ethics as the motivator that leads to proper or improper action. If your value system is founded upon  honesty , you would probably choose to study for a difficult test rather than cheating for a passing grade. However, if you value  achievement  and  success  over honesty, you may decide to cheat on the exam instead. This relates to which value is “worth more” to the individual. An example of a moral in the example above is determined by a person's value of honesty:  cheating is bad . Someone who values success more than honesty may behave by another moral:  cheating is fine . Doctors are held to a strict code of ethics when they swear the Hippocratic Oath. They are bound to the rule "do no harm," and can be held accountable if they do cause harm to their patients. Ethics are basically an institution's attempt to regulate behavior with rules based on a shared moral code. Violating ethics has the same consequence as breaking a rule, while violating one's morals results in personal guilt and shame instead of a societal consequence.

Nature of ethics Scientific Nature:  Ethics is a normative science which determines norms, moral values in a person and an individual’s character. It is a systematic explanation of what is right and what is wrong. Not Art:  Ethics is not art as art deals with the acquisition of skill to produce objects, while morality deals with motive, intention, purpose and choice which are considered right or wrong in the light of goodness. (web) Variable Nature:  Ethics is not static. It is not always the same. Human beings change and the morality and ethical perspective in them also changes. Exclusively for Human Beings:  Ethics can only be applied to human beings as we are the ones who have the capacity for moral judgement. We cannot expect ethical behaviour from animals, as they are not as intelligent as human beings are so ethics is exclusively for human beings.
