Attendance Policy Students are expected to attend all classes for the whole duration. 10 minute rule – subject to a reduction. More than 3 unexcused absences will lead to a grade reduction. All absences must be excused prior to the class in question for it to be excused.

Course Content Module 1 : Paradigms of Gender Equality Feminist Legal Theory and Human Rights Law Global South Feminism and Legal Justice This discussion examines the writings of early feminists who initiated the discourse on women’s international human rights, laying the foundation for gender justice through legal theory. It also explores the intersections of feminism, law, and justice within non-Western contexts, highlighting the impact of colonial legacies on gender power dynamics in the global south and their connection to broader social movements globally and within Pakistan.
Module 2: International Legal Frameworks and Gender Equality Gender and International Human Rights Law Basic Theoretical Frameworks: Formal v. Substantial Equality Basic Theoretical Frameworks: Intersectionality This module examines intersections of gender, law and human rights on a global scale. They will explore key international legal frameworks and regional human rights treaties through a gendered lens, assessing how race, class, sexuality and other identities intersect with gender. Module 3: Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) CEDAW Reservations to CEDAW The Optional Protocol This module will analyse key provisions of CEDAW, the role of General Recommendations in their interpretation, and the legal and social implications of reservations across national legal systems. It will also evaluate how CEDAW’s Optional Protocol can serve as a tool to challenge gender inequality and discrimination. Course Content
