Microservice for NAMASTE ↔ ICD-11
Integration

2@SIH Idea submission- Template
IDEA/SOLUTION

Link NAMASTE codes with ICD‑11 for standardized,
searchable EMR diagnoses

A FHIR-compliant terminology microservice that:
  • Ingests NAMASTE and ICD-11 (TM2 + Biomed) datasets
  • Exposes REST endpoints for autocomplete, translation
(NAMASTE ↔ ICD-11/TM2), FHIR Bundle upload.

❖Provides searchable, auto-complete, and dual-coded
diagnosis entry for EMRs.
❖Enables clinicians to record traditional + biomedical codes
simultaneously.
❖FHIR Bundle upload
  • Provides a Code System for NAMASTE + ConceptMap
mappings to ICD-11
  • Implements ABHA-based OAuth 2.0 security, audit
metadata & versioning
How it Addresses the Problem?

❖Harmonizes traditional (NAMASTE) and global (ICD‑11)
vocabularies.
❖Enables fast, searchable, and auto-complete diagnosis
entry.
❖Ensures standards compliance: FHIR R4, ISO 22600, ABHA
OAuth 2.0.
❖Supports dual coding for interoperability, analytics, and
insurance claims.
Innovation

❖Dual-coding system - Traditional + Biomedical codes together.
❖Modular & lightweight - Works with any EMR/EHR.
❖Faster - Optimized SQLite FTS5 indexing for high-speed search.
❖Standards-compliant - FHIR R4, ISO 22600, ABHA OAuth 2.0.

Tech Stack
❖Programming Language: Python
❖Framework: Fast API (for REST API development)
❖Libraries: pandas , requests, python-dateutil, urllib3
❖Database: SQLite (for lightweight FTS indexing)
❖Standards Support: FHIR R4, ABHA OAuth 2.0, ISO 22600

- We load the NAMASTE and ICD-11 CSV files into a SQLite
database.
- We add FTS5 index on imp columns so lookups stay quick.
- Then we build a concept_map table that records each
NAMASTE↔ICD-11 pairing along with its equivalence tag.
- Finally, the FastAPI endpoint simply reads that table and returns
the matches as a FHIR ConceptMap resource.

FEASIBILITY AND VIABILITY
4@SIH Idea submission- Template
Feasibility:

❖Technical: Python + Fast API + SQLite enables async, fast
search, and FHIR support.
❖Operational: Modular microservice easily integrates with
existing EMRs.
❖Economic: Uses open-source tools → low-cost, scalable, and
maintainable.
Viability:

❖High practical impact: Bridges traditional medicine
(NAMASTE) with global ICD‑11 standards.
❖Adoption-ready: Compatible with existing EMRs and
healthcare workflows.
❖Scalable & maintainable: Modular microservice, easy to
update with new terminologies.
Use Case:

❖Clinician types a NAMASTE diagnosis → system
autocompletes term.
❖System maps NAMASTE code → ICD‑11 TM2 + Biomed code.
❖Both codes stored in EMR’s FHIR Problem List for
interoperability, analytics, and insurance claims.
Challenges:

❖Concept Mapping: NAMASTE ↔ ICD‑11 Biomed mapping can
be complex.
❖Data Gaps: Some traditional medicine codes have no direct
Biomed (allopathy) equivalent.
❖Standards Compliance: Maintaining FHIR, ISO 22600, ABHA
OAuth requirements.

IMPACT AND BENEFITS
Potential Impact:

❖Seamless Data Interoperability:
Enables standardized communication between NAMASTE,
ICD-11 TM2, and various EMR systems, promoting unified
healthcare data exchange across India.

❖Bridging Modern and Traditional Medicine:
Facilitates integration of AYUSH (traditional) practices with
modern medical data, supporting evidence-based holistic
healthcare.

❖Scalable Digital Health Infrastructure:
Creates a reusable, modular API architecture that can be
expanded to other national digital health initiatives under
ABDM (Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission).

Benefits:

❖For Healthcare Providers:
- Simplifies integration of diverse medical systems through a
ready-to-use API layer.
- Enables accurate, standardized health record maintenance.

❖For Patients:
- Ensures continuity of care with interoperable health records
accessible across platforms.
- Promotes holistic treatment by connecting AYUSH and modern
medicine data.

❖For Policymakers & Researchers:
- Strengthens national health databases for strategic public health
planning.
- Advances India’s goal of building a globally recognized,
standards-compliant digital health ecosystem.
