Toddlers and Pre-schoolers learn to explore and express feelings, engage
with others, and become more independent when it comes to getting their
needs met.
Some Social and Emotional Milestone:
12 to 18 months

4 years-5 years old:
•Starts to play with others and might prefer it over independent play.

OF school-age
A child’s social and emotional development includes making friends, playing
with others, and reacting to different situations.
Some of the milestones you may see at this age are:
•They will begin to experience feelings of jealousy.
•Beginning at 5 children will begin to notice the differences in gender and by the
age of 8 or 9 they’ll begin to play with both genders.
•These kids begin to imitate adult behavior.
•Kids this age will enjoy competition, and want to play games with friends, but will
struggle with failure and loss.
•Becomes excessively moody if puberty begins

OF adolescence
As their social circles expand,adolescents spend less time with their families
and may focus more on their peers. Young people also develop a greater capacity
to form stronger relationships with adults outside of their families who may function
as mentors.
Building new connections and establishing identities outside of the context of the
family is a normal part of healthy development. Interacting with people outside of
the family circle can teach adolescents how to maintain healthy relationships in
different contexts and identify roles they can play in the broader community.

Some of the milestones you may see at this age are:
•Have more interest in romantic relationships and sexuality
•Spend less time with parents and more time with friends
•Feel a lot of sadness or depression, which can lead to poor grades at school,
alcohol or drug use, unsafe sex, and other problems
•Go through less conflict with parents
•Have a deeper capacity for caring and sharing and for developing more intimate
relationships
