Socio-economic status of fisherfolk depends on reservoir fisheries Examining the impact of reservoir fisheries on the livelihoods of fisherfolk

The total reservoir area in the country is 3.15 million ha. Small reservoir 1.49 million ha. Large reservoir 1.14 million ha. Medium reservoir 0.52 million ha. Introduction Due to their high biogenic production potential reservoir fisheries has played a great role in socio economic development of the country. The objective of the study is to document the socio economic status of Fisherfolk of reservoir, mainly focusing on their status of literacy, health & income.

Demographic Details The age of the respondents were divided into three sub groups, • 15 - 35 years age group. • 36 - 55 years age group. • > 56 years age group. 36- 55 years age group is most active fiishers which constituted about 54.70% . 15- 35 years age group constituted about - 33.49% . The fishers with age > 56 had the least share with 11.81% in total.

Literacy & education attainment Literacy status includes the level of education as indicated by primary, Secondary and college level. • The primary - schooling till fourth grade, secondary level - till highschool, • College level education was denoted by college & professional education. The current literacy rate of india as a whole is 74.52%. The states like Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand & Uttar Pradesh had literacy rate below 70% . The states like Himachal Pardesh, Kerala & Tamil Nadu shows high literacy rate with 88, 90.5 & 76.60% respectively

Income & expenditure pattern The study indicated the 48.49% of respondent had no savings. Around 29.43% of the respondent households could save an amount of less then Rs 50,000 per annum. 18.73 % of the respondent have an annual saving of Rs 50000 to 1 lakh. 3.34% of respondent households had a saving of more than 1 lakh rupee. • The lack of saving and the need for the sustenance of the livelihood often Lead to indebtedness. The highest avg. Amount of indebtedness was recorded in Himachal Pardesh with Rs 88750/ annum lowest in Jharkhand with Rs 6547 / annum.

Conclusion The study showed that the literary rate of reservoir fisherfolk was less than the average national literacy of the country. Low income from fisheries, combined with high labour and risk. Compelled the young working group to shift occupation towards non- fishing Activities. Thus, there is greater need to transform the sector by taking into account its achievement and capabilities.
