SOCRATES

INTRODUCTION Socrates, a renowned ancient Greek philosopher, was born in Athens around 469/470 BCE. His father, Sophroniscus , was a stonemason, and his mother, Phaenarete , was a midwife. Socrates served in the Athenian army during the Peloponnesian War and later devoted his life to philosophy. Although Socrates did not write any books himself, his ideas are preserved through the writings of his students, particularly Plato and Xenophon. Some of the most famous works featuring Socrates include Plato's Apology, Crito, and Phaedo.
