Definition:
•A motivational cycle refers to the process by which motivation initiates,
sustains, and concludes goal-directed behavior.
•It explains how needs drive behavior and how fulfillment or resolution of
those needs ends the motivational state.
KeyPoints:
•Dynamic process: It is not static; it evolves as needs change or are fulfilled.
•Self-regulating mechanism: Involves feedback loops to maintain equilibrium
(homeostasis).
I. Concept of the Motivational Cycle
Emotional Intelligence and Conflict Management Session 3
Dr. Antonio Rodríguez Alcalá
Drive-Reduction Theory (Hull, 1943):
•Drives are internal states caused by unmet physiological or
psychological needs.
•Motivation is directed toward reducing these drives, thus restoring
balance.
Incentive Theory:
•External stimuli (rewards) motivate behavior toward a goal.
•The motivational cycle is influenced by both intrinsic (internal) and extrinsic (external) incentives.
II. Foundation of the Motivational Cycle
Emotional Intelligence and Conflict Management Session 3
Dr. Antonio Rodríguez Alcalá
1. Need or Drive Emergence:
•Trigger: The cycle starts when an
individual recognizes a need or an
unsatisfied drive (e.g., hunger, thirst,
desire for achievement).
•Types of Needs:
oPrimary: Physiological (hunger,
thirst).
oSecondary: Psychological (social
belonging, self-esteem).

2. Goal-Oriented Behavior:
•Action Initiation: To satisfy the need,
the individual engages in goal-directed
behavior (e.g., eating to satisfy hunger,
studying to achieve a high grade).
•Behavioral Effort: The intensity of
motivation impacts the effort applied
toward goal attainment.

3.Behavior Performance:
•Execution of actions: The individual
actively performs behaviors that are
anticipated to fulfill the need (e.g.,
consuming food, completing tasks).
•Problem-solving: The individual
assesses different strategies to
achieve their goal.

4.Need Fulfillment:
•Satisfaction: The individual achieves
the desired outcome, fulfilling the
original need or drive.
•Reward: Feelings of pleasure or relief
may occur upon satisfying the need.

5.Homeostasis/Restoration of
Balance:
•Balance Restored: Once the need is
satisfied, the motivational drive
subsides, and the body returns to
homeostasis.
•Cycle Completion: The cycle
concludes, but it may restart if new
needs arise.

Understanding and Applying the Motivational Cycle in Real-Life Scenarios
Objective:
To help understand the stages of the motivational cycle by analyzing real-life situations and
applying the concepts to their own experiences.
1.Group Activity: Scenario Analysis (45 minutes)Step 1: Divide students into small groups (4-5 students per group).
Step 2: Assign each group a specific example from the provided list, such as:
•Group 1: Hunger and Eating Behavior.
•Group 2: Academic Achievement.
•Group 3: Social Belonging.
•Group 4: Professional Achievement.
•Group 5: Physical Fitness and Health.

Dr. Antonio Rodríguez Alcalá
Step 3: Analyze the Scenario
Each group discusses the following:
•Need Emergence: What is the driving need or motivation in the scenario?
•Goal-Oriented Behavior: What behaviors or actions are taken to fulfill the need?
•Behavior Performance: How is the behavior executed, and what specific steps are involved?
•Need Fulfillment: How is the need satisfied, and what does success look like?
•Homeostasis: How does the individual feel after the need is satisfied? Is balance restored?

Step 4: Create a Diagram
Each group draws a diagram of the motivational cycle related to their scenario. This diagram
should:
•Visualize each stage of the cycle.
•Include the actions or emotions relevant to the scenario (e.g., feeling hunger →searching for
food →eating →feeling full →restoring balance).
Step 5: Present Findings
Each group will present:
•Their analysis of the scenario (the motivational cycle in action).
•Their diagram, explaining how it illustrates the motivational cycle.

PROJECT 3: Personal Reflection on the Motivational Cycle
Objective:
To apply the concept of the motivational cycle by reflecting on a personal experience where you
went through the stages of need emergence, goal-oriented behavior, behavior performance, need
fulfillment, and homeostasis.
1. Identify a Personal Experience:
Think about a situation from your life where you experienced the motivational cycle. This could
be related to:
•Achieving a personal or academic goal (e.g., preparing for an exam, completing a project).
•Fulfilling a physical need (e.g., hunger, fitness).
•Meeting a social or emotional need (e.g., forming friendships, joining a social group).
•Achieving a professional goal (e.g., getting a job or internship).

Dr. Antonio Rodríguez Alcalá
2. Describe the Experience:
Describe your experience in detail. Be sure to include:
•Need Emergence: What need, or motivation emerged in your experience? How did
you recognize it?
•Goal-Oriented Behavior: What actions did you take to satisfy that need? What specific
steps did you plan and execute?
•Behavior Performance: How did you follow through with your plan? What challenges
or obstacles did you encounter, and how did you overcome them?
•Need Fulfillment: Did you achieve the desired outcome? How did you feel once the
need was satisfied, or the goal was achieved?
•Homeostasis: After satisfying the need, how did your motivation change? Did you
experience any new needs, or did the motivational cycle restart in a different way?

PROJECT 3: Personal Reflection on the Motivational Cycle
3.Reflection and Analysis:
In the final section of your essay, reflect on your experience:
•How did understanding the motivational cycle help you analyze your behavior in this situation?
•Would you change any of your actions in the future based on what you now know about the
motivational cycle?
•Did the feedback loop influence your behavior? How?
