SOFTWARE Prepared by: Mr. Joshua A. Casas Computer Education Instructor

Computer Software History The person credited to be the first programmer was a women named Ada Lovelace , she was born A ugusta Ada Byron (1815-1852). She worked with Charles Babbage and was writing a program for analytical engine. 2

Software Is a set of Instructions or programs that tells the computer how to do a specific task. It is Untouchable and used to direct the hardware on how to turn data into useful information for people to use.

(2)Two categories of computer Software. 1. System Software 2. Application Software

1. System Software- Performs tasks necessary to the efficient management of the hardware. Let just simply say, that a system software are helps to control the running in computer.

Computer Memory There are two Parts of Primary Memory 1.RAM Memory also called Random Access Memory or RAM (temporary memory) is the main memory of the computer. It consists of electronic components that store data including numbers, letters of the alphabet, graphics and sound. Any information stored in RAM is lost when the computer is turned off. 2.ROM stands for Read Only Memory or ROM is memory that is etched on a chip that has start-up directions for your computer. It is permanent memory. 6

Amount Of RAM In Computers The amount of memory in computers is typically measured in kilobytes or megabytes. One kilobyte (K or KB) equals approximately 1,000 memory locations and one megabyte (M or MB) equals approximately one million locations A memory location, or byte, usually stores one character. Therefore, a computer with 8 MB of memory can store approximately 8 million characters. One megabyte can hold approximately 500 pages of text information. 7

Storage Capacity Bit is short for binary digits and it is single piece of information, either 0 or 1. Computers only understand binary digit and inside the computer, data is represented as 0 or 1 or strings of 0’s and 1’s. 8

Computer Software Computer software is the key to productive use of computers. Software can be categorized into two types: Operating system software Application software. 9

Operating System Software Operating system software tells the computer how to perform the functions of loading, storing and executing an application and how to transfer data. Today, many computers use an operating system that has a graphical user interface (GUI) that provides visual clues such as icon symbols to help the user. Microsoft Windows 98 is a widely used graphical operating system. DOS (Disk Operating System) is an older but still widely used operating system that is text-based. 10

SYSTEM SOFTWARE a. Operating System b. Utility Programs c. Compilers and Interpreters A . Operating System- A set of programs which controls and coordinates the whole operation of the computer system. Examples of the Operating System; Linux f. Windows CE k. Windows ME MacOS G. Windows 3.X I. Windows NT MS-DOS h. Windows 95 m. Windows 2000 IBM OS/2Warp i . Windows 96 N. Windows Vista Unix j . Windows 98 SE o. Windows XP

B. Utility Programs- are system software service programs that help the operating efficiently manage files and do housekeeping functions, and security. Examples : Disk Defragmentation e. Compression System Profile/Status d. Encryption Virus Scanner g. Application Launchers Text Editor SYSTEM SOFTWARE

C. Compiler and Interpreters- are programs that translate high level language programs into object code. Examples; Turbo C f. Visual Studio C++ g.Prolog Turbo C++ h. Cobol Turbo Pascal I. Basic Assembly Language SYSTEM SOFTWARE

APPLICATION SOFTWARE- are programs that help solve and meet user problems and needs directly. There are (3) three basic Types of Application Software. 1. Commercial Software-Comes prepackaged and is available from software vendors. 2. Shareware software- developed and released as demonstration version of their commercial product. 3. Open Source- is created by generous programmers and released to the public domain for free and for public use . Productivity Software; Word Processing Software –Allows users to create and manipulate documents that contain text graphics Examples: WordStar c. Word Pad MS Word d. Writer

APPLICATION SOFTWARE Spreadsheet Software; Word Processing Software –Allows users to Enter data into rows and columns and perform computations or make graphs based on the data given. Examples: Lotus 123 c. Calc B. MS Excel

APPLICATION SOFTWARE Database Software- Allows user to manage data by organizing these in database tables. Examples; Dbase III d. My SQL MS Access e. Progress Oracle

APPLICATION SOFTWARE Presentation Graphics Software – Allows user to create presentations that communicates ideas, messages and other information through a slide show. Examples; MS PowerPoint Impress

APPLICATION SOFTWARE Personal Information Manager Software - Allows user to maintain an address book and appointment calendar and make use of notepad to record ideas and reminders. Examples: Outlook Address Book Project Management Software - Allows user to plan, Schedule track and analyze the progress of a project Examples; One Note MS Project Graphics and Multimedia is a part of the application Software Computer Aided Design (CAD)- Allows users to create engineering architectural and Scientific Designs. Examples: AutoCAD

APPLICATION SOFTWARE Desktop Publishing Software - Allows a users to design and produce webpages. Examples: Adobe PageMaker b. MS Publisher Vedio / Audio Editing Software- Allows users to modify video/audio segments. Examples; CoolEdit c. Pinnacle Powerdirector

APPLICATION SOFTWARE Home, Personal Educational Use a. Clip Art / Image Gallery – is a collection of clip arts and photographs that can be used in all types of documents. Communications a.Web Browser – is a softeare application used to access and view web pages. Examples: Internet Explorer(IE) Opera Netscape Navigator Mozilla Instant Messenger Software- is a used for instant messaging (IM) a real time communications service that notifies the user when one or more people are online and allows the users to exchange messages or files with them. Examples: Yahoo Messenger MSN Messenger
