When to Plan
INTRODUCTION:-
•Planning in software project management is essential for laying the groundwork that
ensures projects are executed successfully and efficiently. This introduction explores the
significance of planning and key considerations for determining when to plan in the
project lifecycle.
•The timing of planning activities is crucial, typically beginning during project initiation
and continuing throughout its lifecycle. Early planning helps establish a clear direction,
align stakeholders' expectations, and identify critical tasks and milestones. It also
facilitates proactive risk management, resource allocation, and establishes a baseline for
monitoring progress and performance. As projects evolve, planning activities adapt to
changes in requirements, technologies, and stakeholders' needs. This adaptive approach
ensures that plans remain relevant and responsive to dynamic project environments.

When to Plan
•Plan undergoes refinement in its life cycle
•In each iteration, it becomes more detailed & more accurate than the previous.
•In every successive iteration, the emphasis & purpose of planning will shift.
•Planning is an ongoing process
•Plan in each iteration becoming more detailed and more accurate.
•During Feasibility study and project start-up:
•Estimate timescales,
•Risks of not achieving targets completion dates or keeping within budget,
•After the feasibility study:
•Activity plans for ensuring
•Resource availability,
• cash flow control

When to Plan
•Plan to be made at every stage of project development
•Even after the final delivery of project, Monitoring and re-planning must continue to
correct any drift that might prevent meeting time or cost targets
