Properties of Solid Shapes

Slide Content

Properties of Solid shapes What are solid shapes?

Solid shapes Solid shapes are three dimensional. Three-dimensional shape can be defined as a figure or an object or that has three dimensions length, width and height. Unlike two dimensional shapes, three-dimensional shapes have thickness or depth.

Solid shapes The attributes of a three-dimensional figure are surfaces/faces, edges and vertices/vertex. For example: This is a cube and it’s a solid shape. We will look at some more solid shapes later in this lesson.

Types of solid shapes Cuboid

The cube Faces - 6  Edges - 12  Vertices – 8 Let's count the number of faces, edges and vertices on the cube.

Examples of cube shaped objects in real life. Can you name three more?

The cuboid Faces - 6  Edges - 12  Vertices – 8 Let’s count the number of faces, edges and vertices on the cuboid.

Examples of cuboid shaped objects in real life. Can you name three more?

More explanation Look at the differences between the cube and cuboid.

Let us observe a model of a cube and cuboid Models

Now we are going to create a model of a cube and cuboid. You will need cardboards, glue, scissors, ruler, pencil and some explanations from me.

The properties of a cylinder The cylinder has 2 flat faces, 1 curved face and two edges. The cylinder has no vertices.

Let’s try to identify objects in our surroundings that looks like a cylinder. For example, a can of soup. Try your best to find objects that has the properties of a cylinder. Can you name three objects that looks like a cylinder?

Let us observe the properties of a cylinder using a model Take a look at the model

Let us observe a model of a cylinder. MODEL

We are going to create a model of a cylinder. You will need cardboard, glue,a circular object to draw two circles, ruler and scissors. Listen to the procedures.

The cone The cone has one curved surface and sometimes one flat surface. The cone has one vertex and one edge.

Let us observe a model of a cone. Take a look at the model

Examples of cones in real life. These are some examples of cones in real life. Can you name 2 more examples cones?

Let’s make a model of a cone You will need, ruler, pencil, a circular object, glue and cardboard.

The sphere The sphere has no edges and vertices. The sphere has one curved face. It looks like a ball. I’m sure everyone knows what a ball looks like.

The Sphere Let us observe a model of a sphere.

Examples of spheres in real life. Can you name three more objects that looks like a sphere?

Let us now create a model of sphere. You will need glue, paper, newspaper and tape. (insulation tape).
