Solid-Solid Separation Methods Some of the common separation methods used in separating mixtures of both solids are the following: 1. Sieving Sieving , also known as sifting , is the process used to separate solid particles of different sizes. In this process, the mixture is placed on a mesh of a particular size in order to separate its particles. The tools used in sieving are called sieves or sifters . These tools have small holes or a wire mesh at the bottom. The one used for sifting flour has very small holes.
2. Magnetization Also called magnetic separation , magnetization is the process of separating metallic components in a mixture from nonmetallic components. Some examples of metals are iron, nickel. And cobalt. Due to their magnetic properties, they get easily attracted the iron f illings, since iron has magnetic properties. Those metals which do not possess magnetic properties do not get attracted to magnets. Some examples of such metals are gold, silver, and aluminum.
