Solid Waste Management Rules(SWM) SWM 2016 defines solid waste as solid or semi-solid domestic waste , sanitary waste, commercial waste, institutional waste, catering and market waste and other non residential wastes, street sweepings, slit removed or collected from the surface drains, horticultural waste, agricultural and dairy waste, biomedical waste and e-waste, battery waste, radioactive waste generated in the area.

Agriculture Fisheries Household Commerce and Industry

Household waste as Municipal waste Industrial waste as Hazardous waste Bio medical waste as Infectious waste Types of Solid Waste

Recyclable Material (glass, bottle, cans, papers etc. Composite wastes (tetra packs, toys). Biodegradable wastes (Kitchen wastes and green waste such as flowers, vegetables, fruits). Inert waste (rocks, construction materials). Domestic hazardous and toxic wastes (e-waste, medication). Municipal waste is classified into 5 categories

Industrial and hospital waste is considered hazardous as they may contain toxic substances. Hazardous waste could be highly toxic to humans, animals and plants .

Bio Medical Waste Bio-medical waste means “Any waste which is generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human beings or animals or in research activities.

Effects of solid waste (I) Health Hazard : If solid waste are not collected and allowed to accumulate, many diseases like cholera, Diarrhea, Jaundice may spread and cause loss of human lives.

(II) Environmental Impact : If solid wastes are not treated properly decomposition and putrefaction may take place. The organic solid waste during decomposition may generate obnoxious (intolerable odour).

WASTE MANAGEMENT CONCEPT The 3R to be followed for waste management: Reduce Reuse Recycle

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT METHODS

STORAGE Galvanized steel dustbin Paper sack Public bins

COLLECTION House-to-house collection Collection from public bins

WASTE HANDLING AND TRANSPORT Waste handling and separation involves activities associated with waste management until the waste until the waste is placed in storage containers for collection. Handling also encompasses the movement of loaded containers to the point of collection.

RECYCLING Recycling refers to collection and refuse of waste materials such as empty beverage container. The materials from which the items are made can be processed into new products. Materials for recycling may be collected separately from general waste using dedicated bins.

DISPOSAL AND MONITORING OF WASTE MATERIAL Dumping Incineration Composting Manure pits
