Logic – 1-800-273-8255 Jack Hudson
Final Choice After a hard brainstorm, and a lot of thought, myself and Ben have decided to change our choice of song. We have decided to change from Arctic Monkeys’ “Snap Out of It”, a song about the lead singer, Alex Turner, trying to tell a girl that she should forget about him, and should “snap out of it”, to Logic’s “1-800-273-8255”, a song about how suicide is not the right way to end issues in life. The reason for the change was that we feel it would’ve been hard to have created our original idea of a mental asylum setting for “Snap Out of It”, as where we planned to film we would’ve needed permission, and also it is a very dangerous filming location. Furthermore, “Snap Out of It” doesn’t have as powerful and meaningful of a message as “1-800” does, hence why we found it easier to brainstorm an idea for what we will do for the video
Logic Logic ( Sir Robert Bryson Hall II ) is a rapper from Gaithersburg, Maryland. His songs are famous for inspiration, and his overpowering lyrics have saved people’s lives. He has released 3 albums over his 3 years as being signed to Def Jam Recordings, a world-renowned label, boasting artists such as Iggy Azelea and Kanye West. His most recent album, “Everybody” reached number one of the Billboard 200 charts, his first number one album. “Everybody” features the anthem “1-800-273-8255” (or “1-800”), which reached number 5 of the Billboard Hot 100, and number 2 of the US R&B and Hip Hop charts. This is a potential song that myself and Ben could possibly use for our video.
1-800-273-8255 The song's title comes from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, a hotline in America for anyone suffering with suicidal crisis or emotional distress. The song itself is meant to represent a phone call between a suicidal individual, and the person on the other end of the phone, working for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The song starts with the suicidal individual explaining how they feel, stating that they "Just wanna die today, just wanna die " and in the first verse, they go on to explain how they have been "praying for somebody to save me" , which symbolizes a feeling of loneliness, and feeling of hurting deep down.
1-800-273-8255 The chorus then changes its lyrics, after the suicidal individual has explained how they are feeling, the person on the other end of the phone is now reassuring the person that their life will improve, and taking their own life is not the correct solution to end their issues . The chorus is now; "I want you to be alive I want you to be alive You don't gotta die today You don't gotta die I want you to be alive I want you to be alive You don't gotta die Now lemme tell you why" Alessia Cara sings the second verse, in a calm and reassuring female voice. Lyrics such as " It's the very first breath when your head's been drowning underwater ", which is a contrast between the loss of hope of drowning, to the very first breath after taking your head out from underwater, which symbolises a gain of hope, and furthermore " And when you stare at your reflection, finally knowing who it is, I know that you'll thank God you did" symbolizes that staring at your reflection and knowing who it is allows you to accept who you are no matter, and people will finally be able to love themselves.
1-800-273-8255 The chorus then changes again, to represent the feeling of elation and reassurance that suicide is not correct for this, or any other individual who feels suicidal; “I finally wanna be alive I finally wanna be alive I don't wanna die today I don't wanna die I finally wanna be alive I finally wanna be alive I don't wanna die I don't wanna die” The outro, sung by US rapper Khalid, represents the caller has learned that their life still matters. No matter what hardships they have to face, they will persevere. Due to this conversation with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, they no longer has suicidal thoughts and plan on living life normally again.
Overall Meaning and Representations in “1-800”, and myself and Ben’s own video The song is an extremely powerful song, with an accompanying video that carries the same amount of power and feeling. For myself and Ben’s video, we need to create an equally powerful video, using the same suicidal feelings and how they feel they can overcome this feeling, and continue on with their life. We will be showing the life of a mid 30’s, newly single male, after the passing of his wife. He feels so distraught and upset after the events, and the video will begin with him arriving home after a long and hard day at his workplace, with the fatigue and stress shown through the mise-en-scene of his clothing and props and facial expressions. This will then lead on to show deep depression in the male character After the deep depression is portrayed, it will then move on to show that the male has turned to drink and overdose on painkillers. The male now feels that he has no point in living anymore, and threatens to kill himself via jumping off a bridge into the path of an incoming train, so this is where the video will begin; The actor in the video will be on the phone, lip syncing the first part of the song (“I just wanna die”) The video will then revert back to the reason he is sat on the bridge about to commit suicide, at the point when the lip sync says “Let me tell you why..” ; there will be a reverse motion, and the video will then begin to show him losing his partner, his depression, his alcoholism and then removed from his position at his workplace
