SORTING MATERIAL INTO GROUPS UNIT-4 EXTRA QUESTIONS BY: MISS RITIMA APS RAKHMUTHI

MCQ 1.When we purchase jewellery we look for which of these property: Solubility c. Floatation Lusture d. Transparency 2. All materials have these properties: Have mass c. Both a and b Occupy space d. None of these 3. Which of the following is opaque material: Water c. Glass Bulb d. Wood 4. This is immiscible in water: Milk c. orange juice Mustard oil d. Coke 5.Out of following which will sink in water: Cork b. Wood Dry flower d. A stainless steel spoon

- i.   Oxygen  gas is soluble in water. ii. Grouping things together with similar properties is called   Sorting/Classification. iii.    Mercury   is the metal that exists in liquid state. iv .   Potassium  is a soft metal that can be cut with a knife. v .   Iodine is a  non-metal  that has lustre. vi.  A piece of stone is a  hard   material. vii. All gases are not  soluble  in water. viii . Dried leaf   floats  on the surface of water. ix.  Oily patch on a piece of paper is  translucent . x.  Water is a   transparent  liquid. xi.  Materials that have lustre are usually called as  metal . xii.Materials are grouped on the basis of  similarities  or  dissimilarities  in their properties

GIVE ONE WORD FOR FOLLOWING 1. Will nail sink or float in water. Ans. Sink 2. Give one example of object having lusture ? Ans. Gold 3. Name an opaque object? Ans. Wood 4. Give an example of transparent objects? Ans. Glass 5. The property of liquids to mix in all proportions, forming a homogeneous solution. Ans. Miscibility

SHORT ANSWERS Q1: Name three objects which can be made from wood? Ans.: chair , table and pencil. Q2: What is the difference between miscible and immiscible liquids? Ans.: Liquids that are soluble in water are called miscible liquids and the liquids that are not soluble in water are called immiscible liquid. Q3: write steps to make paper translucent. Ans. : Take a sheet of paper and look at the lighted bulb through it. spread a tea spoon of oil on one portion of paper. Now look at the lighted bulb through this patch. Now you will see bulb more clearly than before. This paper has now become translucent.

- Q4: Why do we need to classify things? Ans.: Since the materials are classified on the basis of similarities or differences in their properties. We group the materials to make our work easy. Q5: What is density? Ans.: Density is the mass per unit volume of the substance . Q6: What are lustrous materials? Ans. The materials which have natural shine on their surface or the shine appears when they are freshly cut or sand papered are called lustrous materials. Generally most of the metals are lustrous Q7:  Why does a coin sink in water? Ans. Object with higher density than water will sink. A coin is made up of metal. Density of metal is higher than water. That’s why coin sinks in water.

- Q8: Why some material loses their shine and appears dull? Ans. Due to the action of air and moisture on them, a dull layer of some other compound appears on them. Thus material loses their shine and appears dull. Q9: Why does sugar dissolve in water? Ans. Water molecules surround the tiny sugar cubes and hit them. This weakens the attractive forces of the surrounding molecules and pulls them into the solution. Q10: Why water is considered as a universal solvent? Ans. Water is capable of dissolving most of the substances in it. That is why it is known as universal solvent . Q11. Define density. How is it related to floating and sinking in water? Ans. The degree of compactness of a substance is called density. The object which is denser than water will sink whereas object which is less dense than water will float.

LONG ANSWERS Q1. Define soluble substance, insoluble substance and solubility . Ans. The substance which dissolves in water is called soluble substance. Example – milk, ink, sugar, common salt etc. The substance which do not dissolves in water is called insoluble substance. Example – sand, stone, mud, glass etc. The property of substance due to which it dissolves in water is called solubility . Q2 . Differentiate between transparent, translucent and opaque
