Sound Level Meters and Dosimeters Detailed Overview and Compliance with Legal Standards

Overview of Sound Level Meters Sound level meters are devices used to measure sound pressure levels in a variety of environments, ensuring compliance with legal standards for noise exposure in the workplace.

Class 2 Integrating Sound Level Meters • Class 2 integrating sound level meters are used for precise noise measurement. • They must have an in-date certificate of test and a suitably tested calibrator. • These meters integrate noise levels over time to provide an average value, known as L eq.

Simple Sound Level Meters (SSLMs) • SSLMs give a read-out of the sound level at a specific moment. • They usually allow switching between A-weighting and C-weighting. • Suitable for measuring continuous or intermittent periods of steady noise. • Useful for routine spot checks but not adequate for compliance with legal standards.

Integrating Sound Level Meters (ISLMs) • ISLMs measure noise levels over time and integrate them to give an average value (L eq). • Used for more comprehensive noise assessments. • Preferred for determining compliance with legal noise exposure standards.

Personal Sound Exposure Meters (Dosimeters) • Dosimeters measure the total noise dose over a working period. • They are worn by the individual and consist of a small recording unit and a flexible microphone. • The microphone should be positioned close to the operator's head for accurate results, but not too close to the body to avoid reflection errors. • Compliant with BS EN 61252 standards for legal use in noise exposure assessments.

Dosimeters in Dynamic Workplaces • Dosimeters are useful where workers move frequently, making static measurements impractical. • Portable and wearable, they provide more flexibility in assessing noise exposure in dynamic environments. • However, misuse or interference (e.g., tapping the microphone) can affect accuracy.

Compliance and Standards • Class 2 integrating sound level meters must be calibrated and have an in-date certificate of test. • Dosimeters must comply with BS EN 61252 for legal compliance in noise assessments. • Ensure regular testing of equipment and adherence to legal standards for accurate noise exposure measurements.
