SPACE PLANNING
CONSIDERATIONS
-BATHROOMS

Site ,
Orientation
and Climate

Generally 25L/s air flow is adequate for toilet ventilation and odourcontrol
•Ideally each bathroom should be located near a
Bedroom or the living room.
•The washrooms should be situated such a way that they
receive ample lighting that aids in eliminating bacteria.
•The direction of airflow must be outwards such that the
odourdoes not circulate in the home.
•Situating the washrooms on the hotter side of the
building also acts as shading the other interior spaces
from the sun.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WET AND DRY ZONES IN
YOUR BATHROOM DESIGN
•One of the most important current trends in bathroom design is finding stylish ways to separate the wet and dry
zones of your bathroom.
•WHAT IS THE WET ZONE?
The wet zone is the area of your bathroom where most of the water-based activity takes place. It needs to contain
your shower and bathtub, as well as towel rails close to hand.
•WHAT IS THE DRY ZONE?
The dry zone is the more commonly used area of the bathroom, containing the toilet and vanity. As this area of the
room is used by your guests as well as you and your family, it is important to keep it dry, so they don’t have to wipe
their feet after using the bathroom.
•WHY DESIGN SEPARATE WET AND DRY ZONES?
I.In a larger bathroom, you can create a partition wall to keep your two zones separate. However, if you choose
a full-length partition wall from floor to ceiling, you need to make sure that your bathroom does not look
cramped, and that both zones can still receive plenty of natural light.
II.smaller bathrooms, there are still many clever bathroom ideas for separating your wet and dry zones. You can
install an enclosed shower cubicle, or use a shower panel or shower doors to create a partition.

Mostly busy
Moderately
busy
Least busy
•While we discussed the
wet and dry two-zone
bathroom layout earlier,
we also need to make
sure that every item is in
its most functional and
practical place.
•Throughout the day, we
visit the vanity to wash
our hands, look in the
mirror and our guests
may also visit the vanity
so think about where you
want it placed.
•Avoid placing it at the
back of the room, to
reduce the foot traffic
through the room and
also keep it quickly
accessible.
PLACEMENT IS KEY

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM CLEARANCES TO BE LEFT?
•To ensure adequate space for movement and the convenient use of fixtures in the Bathroom, the
following minimum clearances must be observed. It should be noted that the fixture dimensions vary
a lot and hence the clearances are taken with respect to the centre-axis of the fixtures and the edges
of the fixtures.
•Centre axis of the wash basin and the adjacent wall -1’8”.
•Side edge of the wash basin and the centre axis of the toilet -1’4”.
•Side edge of the wash basin and the edge of the adjacent bathtub -2".
•Front edge of the wash basin and the opposite wall -3’0”.
•Front edge of the wash basin and the opposite bathtub -2’6”.
•For a Toilet:-Centre axis of the toilet and the adjacent wall -1’8”.
•Centre axis of the toilet and the side edge of the Wash basin -1’4”.
•Centre axis of the toilet and the sideedge of the bathtub -1’6”.
•Centre axis of the toilet and the end of the bathtub -1'4".From edge of the toilet and the opposite
wall -2'6".Front edge of the toilet and the opposite bathtub -2’0”.
•Front edge of the toilet and the opposite wash basin -2'6".

MASTER
BATHROOM
SECONDARY
BATHROOM
POWDER
ROOM
Location: It could be attached to the second
bedroom. Roughly 40-75 SQ.FTin size
Function: This bathroom is shared by kids or other
family members. It is smaller than the master
bathroom.
Scope: The scope of this type of bathroom
depends on who is using it. If it is being shared by
one or more kids, you could use bright colours,
funky shower curtains and shelves that are
reachable for children. However, if it is used by
elderly members of the family, your bathroom
ideas should include safety features like anti-skid
Location:It will be found attached to the
master bedroom. Roughly 180-200 SQ.FT
Function:It is meant for privacy and a
certain measure of luxury since it is the
largest bathroom in the house.
Scope:Typically, this would be the
bathroom where you install a bathtub or a
special shower cubicle. In fact, it would
probably have two basins and storage for
‘him’ and ‘her’. Moreover, most people
invest in ambient lighting and special vanity
counters for their master bathrooms.
Location:This type of bathroom is located
in the common areas of the house
adjoining the living or dining room.
Roughly 18-21SQ.FT.
Function: It is meant to be used by guests
to freshen up. Powder rooms are usually
half the size of regular bathrooms.
Scope: A half-bathroom usually has an
elaborate vanity unit complete with task
lights. It also has a toilet pot. Also, you
might get to see fancy basins and plush
tiles in powder rooms as they are meant

CORNER SHOWER BATHROOMS
Corner shower bathrooms are
three-quarter baths consisting of
a toilet, sink and shower stall.
•corner shower bathrooms are
popular for guest rooms or
dedicated shower rooms.
•Corner shower bathrooms with
a side layout are more efficient
with a tighter 5’11” x 5’3” (1.8
x 1.6 m) floor plan, while
corner showers with a central
aisle are larger at 6’6” x 7’2”
(1.98 x 2.18 m).

FULL BATH -SIDE
•Full-baths with a side layout consist of a toilet, sink, and bathtub/shower combination with the
fixtures located along a single wall.
•Commonly sized with a width based on a typical alcove bathtub, the full-bath side floor plan
provides an efficient and functional clearance space for easy usage of all fixtures.
•Full-bath side layouts are often designed with typical lengths of 8’ (2.44 m) and widths of 5’
(1.52 m).

FULL BATH CENTER BATHROOMS
•Full-baths with central layouts split the
bathroom into two separate fixture walls
that pair the toilet and sink on one side and
the bathtub isolated on the other.
•central full-baths dedicate a central aisle
that can easily access both the bathtub
and/or the toilet and sink.
•full-bath central layouts are commonly
designed with lengths of 8’ (2.44 m) and
widths of 5’ (1.52 m).

HALF-BATHS | POWDER ROOMS
•Half-baths, also known as utility bathrooms or powder rooms, are
minimum bathrooms that have two of the four main bathroom fixtures—
typically a toilet and sink.
•Half-baths are often found near the main entrance of a space and offer
guests an easily accessed bathroom.
•Half-baths are designed with a variety of layouts that can be
differentiated as linear, single wall, or split plans.

SPLIT BATHROOMS
•Split bathrooms are designed to further separate bathroom uses into a primary sink and entry area and a
more private bathtub and toilet zone.
•Divided by a central pocket or swing door, the split bathroom is ideal for shared bathrooms where one user
desires additional privacy without restricting another persons access to the entry sink and vanity area.
•split bathrooms have lengths between 11’-12’2” (3.37-3.71 m) and widths between 5’-7’ (1.52-2.13 m)
respectively.

ACCESSIBLE RESIDENTIAL BATHROOMS
Accessible residential bathrooms
are bathrooms designed for
wheelchair users in residential
zones that provide enough clear
floor space for a wheelchair to
turn.
•Accessible bathrooms must
have either a 60” (152.5 cm)
diameter turning circle or a T-
shaped turning space located
within a 60” (152.5 cm) square
with a minimum of 36” (91.4
cm) wide arms.

•The bathroom can be a dangerous place for the
elderly or the disabled.
•According to theNational Institute on Aging
(NIA),over one in three seniors above age 65
fall each year.
•A majority (80 percent) of these falls happen in
the bathroom.
•Safety in the bathroom, therefore, is necessary
—especially for seniors and the disabled with
mobility problems.
•bathroom safety aids and equipment for the
elderlyto help them improve stability when
they’re using the shower, bathtub, or toilet

Application
of elements
and
principles of
design…

Unity
achieved by
similarity in
colorand
material of
all the
fixtures
Using of similar colors
for the wall, ceiling and
flooring with different
textures and materials
creates harmony
Line of Symmetry
Asymmetrical
balance.. The bathtub
balances the w/c and
washbasins on the
right side

•Using lines have a great impact on the
space.
•It makes the space look enlarged.. either
vertically or horizontally
•This plays a major role in creating an
appropriate scale and proportion in the
room.
The space looks enlarged horizontally
•The continuity of lines from the wall to flooring creates a visual illusion of
taller interior space.
•Adding on color to the specific region further creates emphasis.

Lighting against the
textured wall
enhances the visuality
of the texture
Interestingly filling up the
negative spacewith
furnishings and decors
•It can make a larger space look smaller and makes it cozy.
•Adds emphasisto the part of the room.
•Texturing, if the bathroom is poorly ventilated , and
moisture is a problem
Segregating the various zones with
different materials (texture)
Emphasizing one
wall using texture
Wavy lines add
a sense of
movement…giv
es a soothing
effect

Patterned tiles Patterned shower glass used to
make the glass partially opaque for
privacy

Contrast through colour

Highlighting the positive space..
Where the sanitary fixtures are all
made up of copper contrast to the
marble walls and floor making up
the negative space
Glass panels make up an effective
negative space.. Functionally
segregates the various zones and
also makes the space look larger

Breaking the monotonous look of
bathrooms with variety in shape…irregular
forms make the space more natural and
soothing

Rather than a central lighting
…focusing lighting above each
fixture is more effective and
appealing
Interesting shadows created
by light enhances the space..
Here the horizontal lines
makes the space look longer
Natural lighting makes
