Special Product

Square of Binomial (x + y) 2 = x 2 + 2xy + y 2 (x – y) 2 = x 2 - 2xy + y 2

Patterns in Square of Binomials a. Square of the first term; b. Twice the product of the first and last terms; and c. Square of the last term.

Square of Trinomial (x + y+ z) 2 = x 2 + y 2 + z 2 + 2xy + 2yz + 2xz

Patterns in Square of Trinomial Find the sum of the squares of the first, second and last terms; b. twice the product of the first and the second terms; c. twice the product of the first and the last terms; and d. twice the product of the second and the last terms.

Sum and Difference of Two Terms (x + y)(x – y) = x 2 - y 2

Patterns in Sum and Difference of two terms Multiply the first terms of the sum and difference of two terms b. Multiply the last terms of the sum and difference of two terms

Cube of Binomial (x + y) 3 = x 3 + y 3 + 3 x 2 y + 3 xy 2 (x - y) 3 = x 3 - y 3 - 3 x 2 y + 3 xy 2

Patterns in Cube of Binomial a. Find the cube of each term to get the first and the second terms. b. The third term is three times the product of the square of the first term and the second term. c. The last term is three times the product of the first term and the square of the second term.

(x + y) 3 (2x + y) 3 (2x + 2y) 3 (3x + y) 3 (3x + 3y) 3
