What are Special occasion Speeches?

Special Occasion S peeches Type of speeches given to mark the significance of a specific event which are brief and specific to the event. These are speeches that focus on culturally shared values. Primary purpose is neither to inform nor persuade, but to fulfil the special needs of the occasion

Ceremonial Speech Given at ceremonies by the observance of formality and decorum. Arranged to celebrate something .

Types of Ceremonial Speech Description Goals Guidelines/ Components/ Factors 1. Introduction Mini- speech given by the host of an event. to introduce and build enthusiasm for the upcoming speaker To generate the interest in the speaker’s topic To establish a welcoming climate theta will boost the speaker’s credibility Be brief Be completely accurate Be adapted to the occasion Be adapted to the main Speaker Be adapted to the audience Try to create a sense of Anticipation and drama

2. Acceptance Given by a person who has just received an award, a prize, or an honor . to explain why Special thanks to the prize or award giver, to the one’s who helped in achieving goals. The prize or awards needs to be put into perspective. 3.Presentation Given while presenting an award, prize or honor To recognize the person’s accomplishment Highlights the award’s significance; merits of the award recipient Enhance the credibility of the award and event by personalizing the speech

4.Dedication Delivered to dedicate something to someone. Usually given at an inauguration ceremony, a building named after someone etc. To highlight the importance of a project and to whom it has been dedicated Ho w are you involved? Explain what is being dedicated Explain who was involved in the project Explain the importance of the project 5.Toast A brief tribute to a particular person or a specific event To appreciate and congratulate To recognize the person’s achievement and give the best wishes for the future. Keep it brief and specific Focus on the attention on the person being toasted Avoid any inside joke which is not accessible for all the audience

End the toast by praising the person toasted. 6. Roast Interesting and funny which is usually delivered at the end of the banquet To praise and humorously insult the person being toasted To honor person’s achievement Think about the person who is roasted Look for amusing story or strange habit of the person Poke fun at them but avoid massacre the specific person Avoid the things that are truly private or might hurt the person’s emotion

Eulogy It is given in honor of a person who has died delivered by the priest, imam or any other religious leader To pay tribute to departed soul Personalized the speech by getting information about the departed soul. Farewell Allows you to say goodbye to your current part of your life as you are moving to another part .Usually common in graduations To thank and appreciate people who became part of your journey. Public Relation – intended to enhance the speaker’s or the organization’s image. b. Justification – attempts to defend a particular action c. Speech of Apology - given to accept mistake , apologize and ask the audience for forgiveness. Seek to introduce an entity or a person to another group, organization, or country.

2. Commemorative Speech Usually given to graduation ceremonies , a celebration that marks an important milestone in graduates’ lives. Also, given by a well-known person. Highlight the importance of the graduates’ lives Count the accomplishments of the graduating class Gives best wishes for the future endeavour Put the light on future goals.

Remember! No matter what type of occasion, we must always be reminded that our primary purpose is neither to inform nor persuade, but to fulfil the special needs of the occasion!
