The spider and the fly Mary Howitt Mary Howitt {12 march 1799-30 January1888} was an English love poet and author Of the famous poem ‘The spider and the Fly’ Mary was educated at home. On 16 th april 1821 she was married to William Howitt and began a Career of joint authorship with her husband Together with her husband she wrote over 180 Books

Introduction The spider and the fly is a poem having a universal appeal where a spider makes many efforts to trap a fly in the beginning refuses all the offers of the spider but in the end of the poem it comes in the trap of the spider and spider kill the fly and eats it

Summary stanza 1 The spider invites the fly into his parlour He says that it is prettier then any other parlour , the fly has ever seen . He also tells her that the way to his parlour is through a winding stair and he has many pretty things to show her there in his parlour . The fly refuses and tells the spider that it is no use asking her to come into his parlour as she know who ever goes up the stairs never comes down again

The spider again requests the fly and tell her that she must be Feeling tired by flying up so high. He invites the fly to sleep Upon his little bed. He describes the room and says that there Are many pretty things like curtains all around and the bed is covered with fine sheets he says that she will comfortable welcome her on the bed . The fly again refuses him by saying That who ever Sleep upon the spider’s bed never wakes up again

Stanza 2 The cunning spider now addresses the fly as a friend and ask her what he should do to prove his love for her. He also tells her that he has a cupboard which has many delicious things to eat . He invites the fly to take a slice . The fly refuses him by saying that he does not want to see What is in his pantry . The spider again Tries to convence her by calling her witty and wise. He calls her thin and transparent wings handsome and says that her eyes are brilliant

The Spider says that he has a mirror in his parlour in his on the shelf and if the fly comes inside for a moment she can see herself in the mirror . The fly refuses the Spider’s offer ones again and bibs him good morning

Stanza 3 The spider comes back to his den as he know that silly fly will be unable to stop herself after hearing so many flattering words . So he makes a web. After doing so he comes out and start singing for the fly. He says that she is wearing a beautifull gown of green and purple colour . He calls the fly’s eyes as bright as damond while his own eyes are dull as lead . Soon the foolish fly comes into his Den and the fly never comes out

In last fly say It is lesson for the students who read this story that they must never pay attention to anyone who flatters them . They should close their eyes and ears to the one who gives them false praise . Who do false promises { the poet wishes that children should take a lesson from the poem}

Moral of the story The poem “ The spider and the fly ” gives the lesson that one should not victim to other people’s flattery. Who flatter’s is not a true friend. Such type of company should be avoided
