Definitions

True Or False If a person does not say no, they have consented

False Answer?

Consent At its most basic level, consent is permission for something to happen or agreement to do something. New York is an Affirmative Consent or “Yes Means Yes” state. Affirmative consent is a knowing, voluntary, and mutual decision among all participants to engage in sexual activity.

True Or False Most people have either experienced sexual violence or know someone who has

True Answer?

Sexual Assault Any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient Sexual assault is NEVER the fault of the survivor!

True Or False There is nothing that I can do to keep my community safer

False Answer?

Pro-Social Bystander Individuals who witness an event and choose to intervene with the intention of having a positive impact on the outcome of the event We all have the ability to be pro-social bystanders

I always wondered why somebody didn’t do something about that, then I realized I am somebody Lily Tomlin

Bystander Intervention

Group Discussion Think about a time that you influenced your friends or community in some way. How did you impact those around you?

Step 1 Notice The Event Be aware of your surroundings Observe the reactions of others Be aware of willful neglect Event can be in person or online

Awareness Test

Step 2 Interpret It as a Problem Investigate Ambiguity Beware of conformity Unpack your biases Do some perspective taking

Perspective Taking

Addressing Rape Culture Sexual violence exists on a spectrum Interpreting an issue as a problem requires us to understand this spectrum and see issues starting at the bottom

Step 3 Assume Personal Responsibility State your intent to help out loud Enlist others to help Be aware of the bystander effect

Identities & Intervention Identities can determine if we receive help / what kind of help we receive Identities can determine if it is safe for us to help / what ways are safe for us to help Image & text from: Show up – Bystander intervention guide by C.U.P & Hollaback

Now It’s Your Turn to Practice

You are at a party with a few friends. Throughout the party you see a guy you don’t know continually passing drinks to a girl while he appears to only be drinking a bottle of water. Later on you overhear him tell a friend “yeah, she’s getting totally wasted. I’m definitely getting some tonight!” What do you do? Direct Indirect Distract Document Role Play Scenarios You and a group of friends head out to a club to dance and have some fun. Two of your friends, Sam and Chris, start dancing together and kissing. At first it seems like they are both enjoying it but, as things progress, Sam’s body language and facial expressions start to make it seem like something is wrong. What do you do? Direct Indirect Distract Document You and your roommate go to a movie with 2 friends of yours, Abby and Sarah, who have been dating for a few months. On the way to the movie, Sarah repeatedly makes fun of Abby. When Abby tries to order popcorn before the movie, Sarah says that maybe Abby should just get water since she is “getting a little fat.” Abby is uncharacteristically quiet for the rest of the evening. After the movie, you go to a nearby diner and Abby is nervous about ordering a meal. What do you do? Direct Indirect Distract Document

Campus Support & Resources You have the right to be free from violence of all kinds You have the right to have your boundaries respected If someone violates your consent, you have the right to support from the college
