AFGHANISTAN
Afghanistan, officially known as The Islamic
Republic of Afghanistan, it’s current capital is
Kabul. Their official language are Dari and Pashtu,
their current president is Ashraf Ghani. Due to its
location, it was the target of both Great Britain and
Russia.

Location OF
Afghanistan
Afghanistan is an Islamic republic, An Islamic republic is a
government where the people participate in making the
laws through their elected representitives. Afghanistan has
always been the link between central asia, west asia, and
india. It was part of a trade route as well as a route for
conquests. Hence, it has a multiracial population.
However, the Pashtuns compose 50 percent of its
population. Due to it’s location Afghanistan has always
been the most war-torn, most ravaged, and unfortunate
country.

The Great Britain
and Russia
In 1747, Nadir Shah of Iran conquered the territory, when
he died, a Pashtun, Ahmed Shah, and his family ruled for
the next 200 years. In the 1800s, Great Britain and Russia
became rivals in conquering the country. The British
wanted to expand its power to the Hindu KashMountains,
and Russia wanted to gain more territories. But in 1917,
the Bolshevik Revolution erupted in Russia, King
Amanullahdeclared independence from the British and
signed a treaty of friendship with the Russia leader. A civil
war was instigated by the British, and overthrew the king.
Muhammad Nadir Shah took over, and was succeeded by
Muhammad ZahirShah.

Soviet Union
The Soviet Union invaded the country in 1979 and seated
their puppet, Karnal. They supported him with military
troops and weapons to keep him in power. In response,
Islamic fundamentalist groups formed guerrilla units, the
Mujahideen, to oust the Soviet-sponsored government.
Meanwhile the US watched the happenings in Afghanistan
closely, they suspected that the intention of the Soviet
Union was to gain access to the oil-rich countries of west
Asia which could endanger the oil investments in US,
secretly through the Pakistani Secret Service, the CIA
supported the Afghan guerilla. Eventually they withdrew its
support from the PDPA, and lost interest in Afghanistan.

Students of Islamic
Another dominant group emerged -----The Taliban or The
students of Islamic Knowledge Movement. This is a group
of young religious students motivated by their zeal for
Islam and the belief that they were ordained to bring
stability and the ways of Allah back to their war-torn land.
The Taliban sought to create a theocratic state based on
its interpretation of the Qur’an, The Taliban used extreme
methods particularly terrorism to call world attention to its
cause.

Afghan Northern
Alliance
The AghanNorthern Alliance of former Mujahideen
warlords with the support of the US ousted the Taliban
government in December 2001. But up at the present,
fighting between the government militia and Taliban forces
has continues.
