Law against child marriage The child marriage restraint act [CMRA]was passed in 1929 The minimum age for a girl’s marriage was set to 14 and that for boys was fixed at 18 .The act later amended and the age for girls was fixed at 18 years and for boys was changed to 21 years. The child marriage restraint act 1929 is also known as the sharda act. It is an Indian law that prohibits the marriage of children under the age of 18 The act was passed in response to concerns about the harmful effects of child marriage Whoever performs , conducts directs or abets any child marriage shall be punishable with rigorous imprisonment which may extend to two years or shall be liable to fine which may extend to one lakh rupee unless he proves that he had reasons to believe that the marriage was not a child marriage
