S tammer by K. Sachidanandan

K. Sachidanandan K. Sachidanandan is a Malayalam poet who writes also in English. He belongs to the group of modern intellectual poets.

About the poem Stammer is the translation of the Malayalam poem ‘vikku’. The poet says that stammer is not a handicap . It is a mode of speech. Just as a silence between a word .Stammer is the silence that falls between a word and its meaning. And that silence contain a thousands of meaning.

The poet is not sure if stammer is a dialect or a language by itself. He wonders which came first- language or stammering. Stammer occurs when we want to express ourselves. That is why the poet says that stammer is a sacrifice to God of meanings. When a whole people stammer it becomes their mother tongue. The poet says that the God himself must have stammered when he created man. For same reason our prayers, commands and poems are not able to express exactly what we want to express.
