ABSTRACT



The proposed Film City in Kuthambakkam, Thiruvallur district, Chennai, is
envisioned as a transformative hub for Tamil Nadu’s film and television
industries. Spanning 152 acres with an estimated investment of Rs 500–540
crore, the project will be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP)
model. Designed to integrate cutting-edge technologies, such as Unreal Engine
Studios, the Film City will offer advanced production facilities, including
studios, shooting locations, and post-production infrastructure, to streamline
filmmaking processes and reduce costs. Strategically located near the upcoming
Kuthambakkam Bus Terminus and a proposed metro line from Poonamallee to
Parandur, the project aligns with Chennai’s urban development goals,
particularly the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority’s (CMDA)
vision for a “15-minute city” in the Thirumazhisai satellite township. The Film
City is poised to boost regional economic growth, enhance connectivity, and
position Chennai as a global filmmaking destination, while navigating zoning
regulations and environmental considerations to ensure sustainable
development.

Need for the project :
The need for the proposed state-of-the-art Film City in Kuthambakkam,
Chennai, stems from a combination of economic, cultural, and infrastructural
factors, addressing gaps in Tamil Nadu’s film industry and aligning with
regional development goals.the Kuthambakkam Film City is needed to fill the
gap in modern film production infrastructure, drive economic and regional
development, enhance Tamil Nadu’s global filmmaking stature, and capitalize
on cultural and tourism opportunities, all while aligning with Chennai’s urban
planning objectives.




Scope of the project :
• Design of a comprehensive Film City in Chennai that includes
production studios, post-production facilities, outdoor shooting locations,
film museums, and tourist attractions.
• Integration of Tamil Nadu’s cultural heritage and sustainable design
principles.
• Focus on enhancing the film industry's infrastructure and promoting
film-related tourism.




Limitations of the project :
• Budget constraints may restrict the inclusion of certain advanced
technologies or large-scale outdoor sets.
• Environmental regulations and site-specific constraints may limit the
scope for large developments or specific design features.

STUDY
Integration of Vegetation in Ramoji Film
City :
Ramoji Film City is a large entertainment
hub with a commitment to sustainability,
integrating vegetation for environmental
friendliness and green spaces. Sustainable
Land Use and Vegetation Planning :
Film City Landscaping Zones
Entertainment zones: Aesthetic, vibrant
flowers and ornamental plants.
Ecological zones: Native species planting
for habitat and water reduction.
Cultural and heritage zones: Traditional
trees and plants blending culture with
ecology.
Biodiversity Corridors: Green corridors,
designed to promote plant and animal
movement, are often adorned with native
trees like Indian Tamarind and Neem,
supporting local species like birds, bees, and
butterflies.
The gardens, featuring plants like
sunflowers, lavender, and zincnias, attract
pollinators like bees and butterflies,
promoting the health of the ecosystem and
promoting natural pollination for other
plants. Energy Efficiency and Urban Heat
Island
Mitigation : Green Roofs (Princess Street)
Green roofs, covered with vegetation, not
only enhance aesthetics but also insulate
buildings, reducing energy consumption and
air conditioning usage, especially with vines
and moss.
Tree canopy strategically placed in public
spaces reduces heat island effect by lowering temperatures, using large canopy trees
like Ficus and Palm trees for walkway .

A blue screen functions the same as a green screen but is used when the scene
contains green elements.
Advantages of Green Screen:• Reduces color spill.• Suitable for low-light or
nighttime settings.
Challenges in Chroma Keying:• Blue clothing color complicates chroma
keying.• Digital cameras require higher exposure, increasing noise.
Use of Blue in Films :• Period films with historical costumes.• Special effects
for scifi/fantasy films.• Night scenes for darker, blended blue.

Architect : Charles Boot, who collaborated with J. Arthur Rank, a British film
mogul, to establish the studio in 1935.
Aim of the study :An architectural study aims to analyze Pinewood Studios' planning,
design, and functional aspects, addressing technological, environmental, and operational
challenges while supporting its dual role as a film production hub.
Architectural Style and Layout : The design prioritizes functionality and modernity, with
zoning separating production areas, administrative buildings, and support facilities to
optimize workflow.

Built-Up Spaces: Sound Stages -16 ,OutdoorBacklots,Post-Production Facilities,Workshops

The West Area of Pinewood Studios is divided into three areas: the central area, which is
used for film studio development under Policy EP2, the southern area, which is within the

Green Belt, and the northern area, which is used for external set construction and
temporary buildings. The audit of the existing West Area site provides a detailed description
of the building stock and production facilities. The southern area includes gardens formerly
belonging to Heather den Hall and the
Orchard and Paddock Backlot areas.
The Preferred Strategy Development
Framework (PSDF) Scheme aims to
reconfigure and expand facilities for screen-
based media, including film, television, and
video games, by constructing new stages,
workshops, office accommodation, and
other facilities. It also includes external film
production, new vehicular and pedestrian
access, emergency access, and landscaping
and ecological habitat creation works. The
scheme also includes the demolition of
outdated accommodation, construction of
new entrance structures, gas CHP energy
center, underground waste water treatment
plant, and recycling facilities.

Qingdao Movie Metropolis (QMM) is a high-tech, Neo-Futuristic film city integrating state-
of-the-art studios, post-production facilities, entertainment hubs, commercial spaces, and
residential areas. The design prioritizes technology, sustainability, and immersive cinematic
experiences to position Qingdao as a global film industry hub.
QMM’s design is a fusion of digital technology, organic forms, and high-tech materials,
creating an immersive cinematic landscape.
Key Design Principles :
Neo-Futuristic Forms and Digital & Interactive Facades:
• Parametric, fluid structures inspired by nature and film reels.
• AI-driven LED surfaces for dynamic visuals.
• Smart, sustainable materials like self-healing concrete and kinetic solar panels.
Concept :
The design concept is inspired by a conch, an ancient sea creature. It aims to blend regional
cultural symbols with modern functions in a meaningful way. The conch represents

Masterplan of a new state-of-the-art full service movie and television studio consisting of 20
sound stages, 5 production support buildings, commissary, mill/shop/storage buildings,
post-production, and administrative offices totaling nearly 900,000 sf. on approximately 300
acres as part of a mixed use project.

and cinematic innovation through immersive design, real-world filmmaking, and cutting-
edge technology, transforming movies into immersive experiences.
Aim of the study :Universal Studios Hollywood aims to combine entertainment,
filmmaking, and sustainability, delivering a world-class visitor experience through design
that prioritizes immersion, functionality, sustainability, and technological innovation.

CirclutionPlan :
The Circulation Plan suggests improvements for access, circulation, connections, and parking
for site activities.
Entry Points : There will be 10 entry points,
including 3 public and 7 studio, with upgrades.
Landscape :
Landscaping is important for the visual appeal of
the Specific Plan Area. It enhances steep-sloped
areas, welcomes visitors, improves aesthetics,
absorbs stormwater, and provides shade
Required Landscape :
Landscaping is mainly needed to screen and
buffer blank walls visible from public areas,
parking garages, or unattractive uses. Non-
attraction landscaping must follow County
standards for drought-tolerant plants.

state-of-the-art Virtual Production Stage.

Key Features of the Studio Design: :
The studio offers a unique recording environment with advanced acoustic engineering,
ensuring sound clarity and precision for various music genres. Its interior design blends
vintage and modern elements, offering a professional and intimate atmosphere. The studio
is equipped with modular spaces, catering to diverse recording needs. Located in Paris, it
honors the city's artistic legacy while fostering innovation in music production.
The sender provided a reference image of a spaceship cockpit, describing it as a spacious
space with wide panels and spot lights.Located in a narrow street, the building was built
in 1840 in a typical Haussmanian style. It is a mixed used building with a stone façade and
a large paved courtyard. The studio is nest on the ground floor hidden among atelier and
office spaces.
