TOPIC :- STATISTICAL PACKAGE AND APPLICATIONS..

OBJECTIVES After discussing this topic you should be able to :- Define the word statistics. Define the statistical package. Describe the different types of statistical package. Describe the features of statistical package.

INTRODUCTION Traditionally, in the field of healthcare biostatistics, data has been handled manually; it involves laborious work needing lots of papawrwork. The results often becomes available too late and contains different types of errors. The advent of computers and their popularity in almost every sphere of life jave significantly changed athe way biostatistics is now Applied to health Sciences. Computer hardware and appropriate software have optimized the various processes involved in the application of biostatistics by making the data analysis a nd storage easier, faster, and Errorless. However, the use of computers in statistics has its share of disadvantages as well.e.g , Just as a car cannot be expected to drive itself sensibly under an incompetent driver, in the same way the usefulness of results from a computer depends critically uopn the statistical competence of the user.

CONTD.. Before going to the definition of statistical package, one needs to revisit the definition of statistics and it's function,. In this session we will highlight the areas/ problems that statistics as a discipline addresses to and the kind of the data one gets for the statistical application. DEFINITION:- The term " Statistics " Is a collection of numerical facts or data. It is also used in terms of, a body of techniques and methods for analysing numerical data. Statistics is generally thought of a serving two functions, one is to describe a set of data and other is to draw the inference. Statistics also provides you a methods of estimating how reliable your conclusion are.

PURPOSES OF STATISTICS:- The statistics or statistical techniques have various purposes which includes methods and procedures for - Summarizing Simplifying Reducing And presenting raw data. It then makes prediction and test the hypothesis.

DEFINITION OF STATISTICAL PACKAGE Statistical package is a software for the collection , organization, interpretation and presentation of numerical data/ information. The need for statistical package has arisen because of the complexity of calculations involved in making inference of the data. The advances in computing technologies have made statistics a yet more powerful field.

CONTD.. According to "Ripley" ( 2004) , The mostly widely used statistical package/ software are ; Excell SPSS SAS( dominates certain communities) Minitab( widely used in teaching) Stata Stytat NCSS, etc.

MICROSOFT EXCEL.. Microsoft Excel is very popular and useful spreadsheet program that can be used for data entry and analysis. It has the capacity to generate random numbers and can be used for the computation of many standard statistical applications like computation of mean, range, SD, etc. Microsoft excel is a big worksheet ( it can take data rows in thousands across 256 columns) . MS excel can be used to create tables, graphs and perform statistical calculations. The work done in MS excel acan be easily copied and pasted to many window based programs for further analysis

MICROSOFT EXCEL IN NURSING This course teaches Nursing professionals and Nursing support staffs how to effectively use Microsoft Excel for analyzing clinical, administrative and financial information. All exercises and examples have been developed by Nursing professionals using real-world scenarios and were created using data from hospitals, long term care facilities, clinics, rehabilitation centers, ambulatory surgical centers and other healthcare settings. Skill Set Acquisition As a result of taking this course, all participants will be able to effectively develop and modify Microsoft Excel spreadsheets that accomplish the following: 1. Analyze Length-Of-Stay (LOS) data on multiple units of an acute care hospital; 2. Graph and chart the occurrence of nosocomial infections in a long term care facility; 3. Create sophisticated reports with sub-totals and totals that track clinical productivity; 4. Create easy-to-administer patient assessment templates;

5. Collect and summarize pre-operative risk assessment information by provider; 6. Develop effective data collection tools for monitoring patient falls; 7. Implement simple and effective patient tracking systems across multiple providers; 8. Track surgical implant usage and history by vendor, date, and cost; 9. Quickly and easily download clinical data from the Internet using Microsoft Excel; 10. Develop clinical decision-support tools for healthcare data analysis; 11. Integrate Electronic Health Record (EHR) data with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets; 12. Integrate Clinical Charts and Graphs into Microsoft Power Point presentations; 13. And many other practical clinical examples, all based on Clinical practice

SPSS.. SPSS, Originally known as statistical package for social sciences, SPSS was developed in 1960 at Stanford University to help solve problems in the social sciences, SPSS now stands for statistical product and services solutions and is among the most comprehensive and popular statistical package. In addition to it's provisioning for the standard procedures needed in descriptive statistics, SPSS can take data input from various packages like dbase, excel, lotus and others.. It can filter the data and perform data analysis in selected cases.

SAS SAS, stands for statistical Analysis System, it is very popular comprehensive software developed by North Carolina State University. This software is divided into many modules and it's licensing is flexible, based upon the need for functions. This system contains a very large variety of statistical methods and is the software of choice for many major businesses, Including the entire pharmaceutical industry. The advantage of SAS is it's capability to transport data files in various formats and converts them to SAS data set without much efforts.

USE OF SAS IN HEALTH CARE Payers and providers use SAS Health Solutions to: Optimize the patient journey and treatment pathways. Visualize and optimize resources and costs. Drive enhanced clinical care and patient outcomes. Predict future needs of patients, members and clinicians. Access prebuilt patient-severity and risk-adjustment models.

WHO NEED SAS SKILL While SAS programs are used across a variety of industries, their use in healthcare is becoming ubiquitous. Jobs analyzing data in health insurance, pharmaceuticals, care providers, billing and government agencies are proliferating and increasingly, an understanding of SAS programming is required.

MINITAB.. This is the another statistical package designed to facilitate the teaching of statistical methods bybusing computer. The minitab is also very user- friendly product with well designed documentation facilities being widely used in educational institutions. Minitab combines an array of statistical methods, Graphic tools and project organization features in a user friendly package.

USES OF MINITAB IN NURSING Minitab can help healthcare providers maximize cost savings, improve the quality of care and ensure safety using data analysis and smart process management. 1. Healthcare professionals can use Minitab to collect, analyze, and monitor trends in their data to continuously improve the quality of patient care. 2. Minitab’s Healthcare Module helps deliver improvements and measure success. 3. With predictive analytics, Minitab can help hospitals better predict outcomes to enable them to take actions to improve them. 4. Healthcare providers can also use Minitab to understand re-admission data using predictive analytics and Classification & Regression Trees (CART®).

RESEARCH ARTICLE The participation of nurses in decision making Wed Oct 4 20:41:52 2023 (2011) The participation of nurses in decision making. Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research. pp. 16-19. ISSN 0973709X (ISSN) Full text not available from this repository. Official URL: https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.... Abstract Background and Aim: Staff nurse decisional involvement is associated with positive patient outcomes including a higher nurseperceived quality of patient care, lower patient mortality, fewer complications and lower levels of job strain and burnout. The aim of this study was to investigate the actual and preferred levels of the decisional involvement of nurses in the Iranian state. Material and Methods: This was a descriptive study that was performed at the ILAM general hospitals, IR, during the year 2010. The research instrument which was used was the decisional involvement scale (DIS). A sample of 96 registered nurses (RN) were enrolled in the study by using a simple random sampling method. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed by using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences Program, Version 11.5 (SPSS). Results: The nurses reported the actual involvement in their work environment to be only somewhat (M = 2, SD = 0.75) and also reported high levels of preferred involvement (M = 4, SD = 0.65). Collaboration/liaison activities were the most actual involvement aspect in the work environments of the nurses (M = 3.1, SD = 0.69) and unit governance and leadership were the most preferred forms of involvement (M= 4.2, SD= 0.56).Discussion and Conclusion: The results provide support for decisional involvement in the population of Iranian nurses. Therefore, efforts to improve the quality of the nursing work environments into decisional involvement are critically important to sustaining a strong nursing work force in the future. These findings have important implications for nursing leadership.

SUMMARY The science which deals with the numbers is " Statistics " . It crunches the numbers and organises them in a meaningful way so that information is generated. In this topic we have discussed about different kind of package like MS Excel, SPSS, SAS etc. This session intended to makes you familiar with basic functions of statistics that can be performed with the help of computer.

CONCLUSION So, going through the whole discussion we understand that the statistical package is important for nursing too, as it helps the nurses to understand how to interpret findings from the recent clinical trials and how to communicate these findings with patients, and also provides facilities for the data management
