Drugs Steroids
What is a drug? A chemical that affects the functioning of living organisms and the microorganisms (e.g. bacteria, fungi, viruses) that infect them. Drugs are used to cure, relieve, treat or prevent diseases. Humans often use drugs as coping mechanisms or to temporarily escape reality.
How are drugs administered?
About steroids What is a steroid? Any of a group of lipids (fats) that have a certain chemical structure. Steroids occur naturally in plants and animals or they may be made in the laboratory. Examples of steroids include sex hormones, cholesterol, bile acids, and some drugs. Anabolic steroids are synthetic (manmade) hormones that can boost the body's ability to make muscle and prevent muscle breakdown. Some athletes take steroids in the hopes that they will help them run faster, hit farther, lift heavier weights, jump higher, or have more endurance.
About Steroids Medical Uses of Steroids Steroids are injected for the treatment of conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, frozen shoulder, and inflammatory joint diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. Healthcare providers mainly prescribe anabolic steroids to treat low testosterone (male hypogonadism). But they use it for other conditions as well, such as to stimulate muscle growth for people with certain cancers or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
ABOUT STEROIDS Common Steroids Used : Steroids, particularly anabolic steroids, are synthetic testosterone derivatives that are frequently used to improve sports performance and muscular growth. Some of the most popular anabolic steroids are testosterone, nandrolone, stanozolol, and oxandrolone. These drugs have been shown to stimulate the synthesis of proteins and muscle mass, making them desirable to bodybuilders and athletes. However, their use can pose serious health hazards, including hormonal abnormalities, liver damage, and cardiovascular problems.
ABOUT STEROIDS Types of Steroids Steroids are grouped into two categories: corticosteroids and anabolic steroids. Corticosteroids, which include prednisone and hydrocortisone, are typically used to reduce inflammation and inhibit the immune system in disorders such as asthma and autoimmune diseases. Anabolic steroids, on the other hand, are designed to stimulate muscle growth and improve physical performance. Both forms of steroids have important medical use, but they can also lead to abuse and dangerous negative effects if taken without medical supervision.
About Steroids How are steroids applied? Steroid medication is available in several forms that can vary in how easily they will dissolve or how long they stay in the body. Steroids may be given locally to the precise place where a problem exists, or systemically, which means throughout the "system" or body. Ways of local steroid treatment include joint injections, eye drops, ear drops and skin creams. Systemic steroid treatments include oral medicines which is given by the mouth or medicine that is delivered directly into a vein (intravenously or IV) or muscle (intramuscularly). Systemic steroids circulate through the bloodstream to various body sites. When possible, local steroid treatments are prescribed instead of systemic steroids to reduce the risk of potential side effects.
The effects of steroids on the body Steroids are drugs which can provide either a positive or negative effect in one’s life with the main effect of the increase in muscle strength. This tends to cause people to train more often and longer periods of time with improved recovery. Steroids may also come with side effects of a build-up of fluid, swelling in the lower legs and high blood pressure. Positive Effects of Steroids Aids in the treatment of blood disorders, some cancers, intractable arthritis and other serious illnesses. Increase in body mass Reduces inflammation Help build muscle tissue Helps treat delayed puberty, hormone problem and muscle loss from diseases. Fast muscle growth
The effects of steroids on the body Negative Effects of Steroids Early heart attack Psychiatric problems Increase irritability, aggression and anxiety Harm to the reproductive system Can cause diabetes or blood sugar to rise Severe fatigue
Social consequences of drug abuse Drug abuse has severe social consequences, particularly on families. It can lead to strained relationships, neglect of responsibilities, and even domestic violence. Family members often bear the emotional and financial burden of dealing with a loved one's addiction. Emotional stress, financial strain, and relationship distress can result in persistent conflict and dissatisfaction, leading to family instability. Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of substance abuse, as alcohol use during pregnancy can cause birth defects and developmental issues. Infants born to opioid-dependent mothers may suffer from neonatal abstinence syndrome, leading to cognitive or developmental delays. Children of parents struggling with addiction often face neglect or abuse, developing behavioral issues, emotional regulation difficulties, and psychiatric problems.
Economic consequences of drug abuse Economic inequality and drug abuse are deeply intertwined, with drug use often perpetuating cycles of poverty, particularly in disadvantaged communities. Individuals struggling with addiction may face limited access to education and employment opportunities, exacerbating both social and economic inequalities. Poverty and a lack of education significantly increase the risk of developing drug use disorders (DUDs), while also worsening their long-term consequences. Addressing these issues through prevention and treatment is a critical public health priority. This approach is central to the United Nations' 2016 General Assembly Special Session on the World Drug Problem (UNGASS) and is part of Target 3.5 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals.
