About This Presentation

Weather Instruments: Stevenson Screen is used to measure temperature

Slide Content

Stevenson screen Made by : Aariz Nooruddin 7s

What is a Stevenson screen used for? This screen is used to shield the thermometers and thermo-hygrograph from direct sunlight, rainfall and other elements. It allows for the free circulation of air around the thermometer thus creating a uniform temperature in the screen.

Why is a Stevenson screen called so? This structure was designed by Thomas Stevenson (1818-1887), a British engineer and meteorologist and father of the author Robert Louis Stevenson.

How does a Stevenson screen measure temperature? To take temperature measurements, thermometers are placed inside instrument enclosures known as a Stevenson screen. A Stevenson screen is basically a box with louvres that allow air to circulate around the thermometer inside while protecting it from outside elements like rain and direct sunlight.

How many thermometers does a Stevenson screen have? 4 thermometers All 4 thermometers are mounted inside the Stevenson screen to protect them.

What are the two instruments found in the Stevenson screen? A barometer can be found in a Stevenson screen. This instrument measures air presure. A maximum and minimum thermometer can also be found in a Stevenson screen. They measure highest and lowest temperatures

Why is the Stevenson screen made of wood? T he box is made of wood to prevent absorption and conduction of heat. The four sides of the box are louvered so that the air will still be able to enter and circulate freely.
