Storage 101 : A deep dive into cloud and local storage with MSP360 August 15, 2024

MSP360 At-A-Glance

The pros and cons of cloud and local storage How to choose the right storage Best practices for data protection How MSP360 can help you optimize your storage strategy Agenda

MSP360 Backup

Cloud Storage Data is stored remotely on servers owned and operated by a third-party provider, replicated across various locations. Data is accessible from anywhere with an internet connection. Scalable to meet changing needs. Generally less expensive than on-premise storage, pay as you go model. Cloud providers provide all physical security of the data. No need to maintain the physical environment. Internet dependent, which affects the speed of recovery. Cloud Storage vs. Local Storage Local Storage Data is stored on a physical device (i.e. Synology, QNAP, etc.). Data is only accessible from the device it is stored on (may need public IP address to be available with internet). Not easy scalable. Can be more expensive than cloud storage, especially with CAPEX Requires both physical and network security. Requires frequent maintenance. Can work without internet access, usually faster that cloud. Faster restores.

The biggest bottleneck is internet speed Steep learning curve on how to optimize cloud infrastructure OPEX can exceed CAPEX in some cases Businesses may become locked into one cloud provider The cloud introduces new security risks Cloud performance can be unpredictable, especially during peak periods Bottlenecks When Using Cloud Services

There are a number of different cloud vendors available, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Different Cloud Vendors iCloud DropBox Google Drive OneDrive Amazon Web Services (AWS) Wasabi Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Microsoft Azure BackBlaze S3-compatible (hundreds all over the world)

Price for 1 TB\month API calls (get, put, etc) Data egress fee Minimum retention period Minimum commitment Cloud storage price considerations

Object Lock (Immutability) - security Region (location) - connection speed and stability Storage replication - data durability and availability Storage tiers for different scenarios - storage cost control Data seeding capabilities - for initial start (i.e. AWS Snowball, Wasabi Ball, B2 FireBall, etc.) Full S3 compatibility for S3-compatible storage providers otherwise some features may work incorrectly Other features to consider

AWS, Azure, GCP

Wasabi and BackBlaze Wasabi: minimum retention period can be reduced, then needs to be switched on MSP 360 console BackBlaze: Data egress is free for the volume

MSP360 integrated storage Note: This storage is provided only for the backups without webaccess beyond the backup application Initial data seeding is limitedly available

Key configuration parameters for Managed Backup What data should I backup? Define the source of data Where should I backup the data ? Select the storage destination How often should I backup? Define the schedule How long to store backup data? Define the backup retention Considerations for different environments 3-2-1 backup rule Only Back up what you really need to restore Configuration Best Practices

The importance of backup scheduling - defined by RPO How to setup automated backup scheduling Forever Forward Incremental Saves up to 50% storage space Recurring Incremental + Periodical Full otherwise you keep backups forever Backup Scheduling

Backup Retention Storage cost depends on the backup retention schedule Different cases require different retention Accidental deletion - 2 weeks Storage: AWS Sta ndard, Azure Hot, B2, Local) Backup type: Forever Forward Incremental or Regular Ransomware Protection - 3 months Storage: AWS Glacier IR, Azure Cool, W asabi, etc. B ackup type: Forever Forward Incremental or Regular Complian ce - up to 7 years Storage: AWS Glacier Deep Archive, Azure Archive Backup Type: GFS Use object lock ( immutability) - FREE

Object lock (immutability) Object lock - is a special type of technology that doesn’t allow data deletion until a specified time expires Compliance mode protects the data deletion for everyone without any exception including the root user of the cloud account Governance Mode allows data deletion with special permission to some users (not allowed by default): s3:BypassGovernanceRetention Object lock can be enabled only upon bucket creation, but it doesn’t make everything immutable Can be enabled for all objects by default

Storage recommendations Use a storage provider that best fits your needs Use object lock (immutability) Configure the optimal retention policies Use 3-2-1 backup rule Select the region that is closest to your customers Use lifecycle policies Periodically review the settings to control your costs Configure storage limits with the MSP360 console to stay within your budget Leverage the MSP360 integration with ConnectWise or Autotask to send storage billing information The smaller the backup - the faster restore

Public beta will be available soon! Specify the storage, select backup mode, check how many backups are stored in your preferred storage. Backup & Restore point simulator
