1. The first nightmare sequence in the short horror film kicks off the film and establishes the self-hatred of the protagonist along with showcasing an embodiment of everything he hates occurs. The editing needed for this would include sound effects of footsteps, adjusting the brightness to build the tension, and edit a lot of different camera angles to make it into a seamless scene. This scene would last approximately 1 minute as during this scene, I want to build suspense with handheld footage to give off the feeling of uneasiness. Moreover, to amplify this, I don’t want to use a wide range of camera angles as I want to keep a shot on for longer than usual to rise the tension. Camera angles I will consider using are high angles, low angles, medium shot and long shots. If I did a lot of cuts throughout a single scene, I feel that this will be takeaway from the tension I want to build throughout the short film which is why I want to only use a handful of different angles within this first scene. However, I will still use alternating angles if I believe it will add to the product as I will be gathering several takes of each scene so then I have options on what I want to use. To emphasize the tension as much as possible, during this scene I will be primarily focusing on diegetic sound rather than implementing non-diegetic sound although if I believe non-diegetic sound will assist a particular moment in the scene, I will ensure to add it where necessary.
2. The protagonist properly wakes up and is panicked and has a panic attack (cat jumps on him as a form of comfort.) The audio required would be potentially some suspenseful music. Furthermore, the editing will be more simplistic in this section as there will be only two main camera angles that I will be focusing on due to the complicated nature of trying to get a high angle in a small location and the fact that having a lot of cuts would possibly confuse the target audience’s thoughts and emotions following the darkness of the first nightmare sequence. Similarly to the nightmare sequence, I believe non-diegetic sound could takeaway from this scene therefore I will primarily focus on the diegetic sound although I can add it if necessary.
3. Throughout the day, we see in the day in the life of the character (establishes introverted and anxiety symptoms). An unusual sound/ noise occurs, protagonist goes downstairs and finds out it's his cat. C haracter is seen worrying about what is in certain foods ( ie chicken burgers etc.) There will be sound effects added to emphasize certain things such as a click of a mouse, footsteps and grabbing a box. The editing in this section will be more complicated due to the area being wider as there are more possibilities with camera shots and angles. With this, I will use non-diegetic sound to amplify the unusual sound. Moreover, I will use close-ups on specific items so then the audience understands what is occurring in this scene.
4. Second nightmare sequence, “evil” version of himself belittles him and is berating him for everything he did wrong/ stupidly throughout the day. The sound effects added would mostly be footsteps however I also want to have a sharp knife sound to emphasize the scissors. The editing will be complex due to the variety of camera angles I plan on using. The camera angles and cinematography used will be similar in all the nightmare sequences with only minor tweaks regarding how often there are cuts as when there seems to be hope that is when I want to slowly incorporate more frequent cuts without disturbing the flow and what I have established with my audience regarding the pace.
5. Wakes up in a panic, day carries out the same but whilst he games his cat jump scares him making him overthink and be even more anxious. Then, the power goes out with no reason causing the character’s overthinking to accelerate even further. As it reaches its fever pitch the power turns back on. There will be a multitude sound effects I will add in post-production which include the power going out, suspenseful music and a knee bouncing. The editing will be complex as there will be several different styles of camera shots and camera angles along with more usage of non-diegetic sound of the power going out. I am planning on adding a zoom in effect in the post-production to help add build suspense.
6. Third nightmare sequence occurs with the character acting the same as before, although the protagonist is fighting back more and is growing in confidence. The sound effects would be like the ones used in the prior nightmare sequences however I’d like to have the scene be dreary and makes the audience feel cold which I will do through different effects, sound design and editing. The editing will be complex due to the different camera angles I want to alternate between. Similarly to the other nightmare sequences, they will have the same features regarding cinematography and the usage of diegetic and non-diegetic sound with more frequent cuts to emphasize the hope with the character.
7. Wakes up and his panic is a lot less in comparison to the other days. Day goes by smoothly apart from him still looking at what is in his food and the calories. The editing will be quick, speedy but makes the audience feel that something is off which I will do through unique camera angles and the usage of non- diegetic sound such as picking up a box.
8. Last nightmare sequence occurs, and the protagonist finally accepts himself for who he is. When he wakes up, he stares into the ceiling. The camera angles will be interchangeable throughout the sequence to make it feel like a worthwhile conclusion. The sound design will need to be at its best during this to make it feel like a big climax to the horror film. To do this, I will use non- diegetic sound and potentially copy right free music to add to the feeling that this is the turning point in the film.
9. Finally, the protagonist messages his friends and goes out, although he gets jump scared by his cat (more in a comedic sense.) Short film ends with protagonist leaving his house and his embodiment of everything he hates dissipates. The editing will be the most complex during this section as I will be using a multitude of different effects to make this section be seamless. The sound effects added will be at its most during this section as keys, coat and closing the door is only a few of the sound effects I will need to make this ending feel like a complete narrative. There will be more frequent camera angles once again to showcase that there is hope for the protagonist.
