Analysis Of The Book The Screwtape Letters By Quot. Lewis
C.S. Lewis once wrote There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the
devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and
unhealthy interest in them. Throughout history mankind has struggled, relentlessly, to put this concept
into perspective. Lewis, a well respected Christian author, thought it appropriate to develop a work
that would help individuals grasp the notion of devils. The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis is a
powerful satire that develops situational and dramatic irony by allowing the reader to experience
various thought patterns of the devil.
Clive Staples Lewis has become known as one of contemporary society s most distinguished Christian
authors. Throughout his career, Lewis emphasized a continuing Christian experience in almost all of
his major writing, despite an early intolerance for the Church because of its institutionalized nature.
Ironically, the idea for this novel came about at Holy Trinity Church near Headington Quarry.
Actually, to be more politically correct, the letters were conceived shortly after listening to a radio
broadcast by Adolph Hitler the night before. At this time Lewis remarked, Statements which I know to
be untrue all but convince me, at any rate for the moment, if only the man says them unflinchingly.
These events, along with written narratives, were printed in several corresponding letters to his
brother, Warnie Lewis. The narratives would

Explain why opposition to Russian Governments was so...
Explain why opposition to Russian Governments was so rarely successful in the period 1855 1954?
Throughout the period 1855 to 1954, opposition to Russian governments was a common occurrence
due to dissatisfaction of many civilians lives and the lack of development seen throughout Russia.
However, as much as there were some successful movements throughout 1905 such as the Bolsheviks
gaining support and eventually gaining power, there were also several failed attempts due to intense
use of violence, terror and censorship by the state. It is arguable that whether opposition was
successful, merely came down to the strength of the opposition group or the weakness of the
government in power. All state leaders across the whole period held ... Show more content on

During that time, the populist movement in 1874 76 Going to the people failed as villages as the
peasants saw the middle class as outsiders, showing the vast gulf between the intelligentsia and the

Land and Liberty in 1876, using terrorism and organising the assassinations of leading figures. Lenin
in Power 1917 1924 In October 1917, there was enough opposition for Lenin to take power as leader
of the Bolsheviks. The Provisional Government provided him with no majority support, with the
Bolsheviks winning 24% and the SRs gaining 54% of votes. The Liberal period consisting of keeping
workers and peasants happy left them with little power. Decree on land gives noble land to peasantry

Differences Between Pre Code And Pre-Code Movies
The magazine article describes the stark contrast in the portrayal of female sexuality between pre
Code and post Code movies. Pre Code movies are flagrantly sexual; although some contemporary film
critics believe that women were simply embracing their sexual freedom through these pre code films,
the marketing for many of these brazenly sexual films often included derisive comments from males,
suggesting that the intent of overt sexuality in films was more crude. Post code films often used
screenwriting strategies to stay within bounds of the Code. Denby argues that this censorship actually
created a net benefit for women, who were given stronger personalities and more interesting plot lines
instead of simply being sexual objects. The article suggests that censorship led to the inception of the
screwball comedy genre, which was forced to create sex without sex. The article takes many examples
from primary sources, mostly from films of the pre Code and post Code era. He utilizes these films to
exemplify the difference in the portrayal of sexuality due to the Production Code. Secondary sources,
including a book called Pre Code Hollywood by film historian Thomas Doherty, are used to analyze
pre Code films, which did not follow political or moral patterns of the time. The article describes the
relationship between censorship and screwball comedies as a causal one. Pre code films would
brazenly use female sexuality to make more money through straightforward sex appeal, using

Meursault s Personality
The first lines of Albert Camus novel The Stranger shows Meursault s character traits as Camus starts
off the novel with a detached sort of feeling that sticks with Meursault from the beginning to the end.
The Existentialist part of Meursault s character is significant in part one but as the novel progresses
Meursault starts to show the absurdist attitude that he shows in part two of The Stranger. Meursault s
character in The Stranger is built upon the ideas of existentialism and absurdism and how nature
affected his actions.
Firstly, Monsieur Meursault had Existential beginnings and, therefore, existentialism is a defining
characteristic of Meursault in part one of The Stranger. The opening lines of Albert Camus 1946 novel

At the end of part one of The Stranger, he must decide You could either shoot or not shoot and as
Meursault comes to the conclusion to not shoot and starts his existential crisis because this is a large
part of his personality and what he talks about shows us more of his opinion (Camus 56). As he talks
to his attorney before his court appearance he talks about what he associates it with scenes like this in
books and it all seemed like a game to me (Camus 64). He sees this situation with him and the
examination magistrate to be a game, one where he has to protect himself from the judge who will try
and convict him of murder. This is further shown by him talking about how this is like a scene in a
book to him; this shows his more absurdist personality, as he sees joy in this predicament although
many people would not be happy to be going on trial for murder. Meursault on the stand for murder of
the Arab states that for the first time in years I had this stupid urge to cry and shows an emotion other
than detachment in saying because I could feel how much all these people hated me (Camus 90). This
is the first time that Meursault is recognizing that he has emotions and this shows us more of his
absurdist personality by saying that he had this stupid urge to cry and this being caused by an act of
extreme pressure of the killing of the Arab and the trial (Camus

The Importance of Respect Throughout Society
The Importance of Respect Throughout Society
There are many forces at work that keep organizations, society, and mankind in general operating.
These can range from the moral basis of the said organization or civilization, to logistic and financial
structure, to the motivation and views of the people in it, the policies of the leader or leaders, as well
as their finesse and charisma, all the way to the traditions and customs that make the organization
stand out uniquely and its people proud to be a part of it. Those are just a few as there are many, many
more, probably too numerous to name. But one force and concept holds most, if not all, of the others
together to give any true organization its life and soul. That concept is respect. ... Show more content

A lot of people believe in respecting someone in high regard if that person is significantly older or
more experienced than them in something. The military has a rank structure used as a means to
identify persons in a position of authority, also used to point out experience within those ranks, and
teaches junior members from the start the importance of respecting all people within that organization
with a superior rank, in order to establish good order and discipline. Ultimately, respect could be
summed up by regarding anyone of high stature, higher authority, or higher age in special or elevated
esteem. To try to pinpoint exactly when respect was first shown by early people is impossible, as the
first signs of it we have seen were in prehistoric times, where there is no definitive written records.
However, it has been shown in evidence that more than fifty thousand years ago, there were signs of
individuals held in high esteem by larger groups of people. This was usually due to either exceptional
hunting or fighting skills, organization of those groups, perceived medical skills or mystical qualities,
or various other social or gathering skills. Even though there were no standing armies at the time,
there were still skilled people looked up to in order to defend or organize the defense of camps against
other humans or even large predators outside of the tribe. Occasionally,

The Effects of Catholicism on the Education of Women in...
The Effects of Catholicism on the Education of Women in Renaissance Italy
According to Paul Grendler, the conservative, clerical pedagogical theorist Silvio Antoniano (1540
1603) reflected on women s educational status in Renaissance Italy in one of his written works,
claiming that ...a girl (should not) learn pleading and writing poetry ; the vain sex must not reach too
high...A girl should attend to sewing, cooking, and other female activities, leaving to men what was
theirs . Apparently, this was the common held view concerning women s education during that time.
Although women were actually encouraged to literacy, their subservient social role as wives and
mothers could not allow them to learn as much as men did (Grendler, 1989). ... Show more content on

Thus, we see that in a sense, Catholicism acted as a catalyst in the development of female education.
Paradoxically enough though, at the same time, it limited the possible level of knowledge they could
attain. The thought of the supposedly foolish, sinful female sex breaking the bonds of ignorance made
many people fear the possibility of women reading forbidden books. Dante s La vita nuova , the
Petrarchan sonnets and the Decameron are a few examples of books that were considered lasciviously
dangerous and kept off limits (Grendler, 1989). Indeed, women could be educated, yet within a certain
framework. Their level of knowledge only went up to a point, in order to make sure they grew up to
be exemplary, pious, Christian housewives. In this paper I will discuss the popular views concerning
women s nature and status in society and how this affected their education. I will mention what
women learned and how; what kinds of institutions were accessible to what types of women. Men s
education will be briefly mentioned in places. My main concern though, is not education in general.
Through this paper I shall attempt to explain how Catholicism made it easier for women to acquire an
education, but at the same time present the restrictions it imposed upon them.

Jains Do Not Harm All Living Things
Jains believe that is no true god in the world. They believe if a perfect god created the world, why
would he have created an imperfect world? That isn t to say that the universe isn t consistently
changing. Jains believe that everything is eternal, but throughout time everything constantly changes.
They believe that two basic substances are mixed together that create the world: the jiva and ajiva.
Jiva is the soul and spirit, it senses and feels everything. Then there is the ajiva which encompasses
the other materials in the universe that doesn t have feeling or consciousness. It is the belief of Jains
that you should not harm anything or anyone because everything has a soul and can feel. Jains do not
eat meat or harm anything living.
Furthermore, their reason for not harming anything is that Jains believe that your soul will be recycled
through time and space for all of eternity; unless, you reach perfection which can be nearly
impossible; however it is achievable. If you don t reach ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

think that everything has feelings and just because they don t have the same consciousness as humans
doesn t mean that they are any less deserving of love or kindness. Everything in this world happens for
a reason, karma comes back to you whether someone believes it or not. If you are kind then good
things will happen to you, if you are rude and mean bad things will happen to you. It may not happen

Persuasive Literary Devices In Amusing Ourselves To Death...
As time has passed the evolution of technology is almost indescribable. Technology has become apart
of our everyday lives. When you think of technology you mostly think about how it has helped
advance our lives, but may never consider its negatives. The media is a huge aspect of how we shape
our society. In the book Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman he shows his concern for how
this all can effect as as a people. He does this by using three popular persuasive literary devices to help
convey his message to the reader. The three devices being: Pathos, Logos and Ethos. All of these are
used many times throughout the book, with their own effects. Logos, is the appeal to logic. When using
this device you are using logical reasoning to help appeal to the reader. This also includes pulling facts,
statics and citing other credible sources to use. The next one is Ethos, which is showing that the author
is a credible source, and is well aware of what he is talking about. Lastly is Pathos, this is when you
appeal to one s emotion to get their attention. In this book Postman does a very good job of using all
of these devices.
Postman was able to incorporate all three of these devices into his book, but the most prominent one in
my opinion is, and that helps to best convey Postman s point is Logos. Logos is using logics and facts.
Two things you very rarely can fight against. Over and over Postman uses facts on how the media is
basically dumbing us down. An example would be

The History of Tattoos
The Beginning of Tattoos
Different cultures tattoo for different reasons like, protection, rank in society, adornment of the body
and coming of age. Regardless of why people are tattooed, they have been tattooing since before the
birth of Christ. Throughout history tattooing has served many purposes. The earliest evidence of
tattooing was found in 1991 in the mountains of Austria. An Iceman was found, his bones dated back
to 3,300 B.C. which is over 5300 years ago. His skin had signs of blue tattoos. The scientists did not
understand the reasons for his tattoos, but counted fifty eight in total. (Wiman Rudzinski, 2002) Egypt

Tribal tattoos have been used for many reasons. They were used to promote a relationship with a god,
and to help then get to the proper spirit world. Tribes also thought that tattoos would give them an
advantage when they arrive to the spirit world. Most of the primitive tribes used some form of tattoos,
scarification or body painting. For the Samoan men tattooing was a right of passage to manhood.
Typical the men were tattooed on the inner and outer thigh area to look like clothing. If a boy did not
have the tattoos they were not given the same respect as a man with tattoos. They could not speak;
they could not marry and were not allow doing certain jobs. When missionaries arrived in Polynesian
lands they tried to get the Samoans to refrain from tattooing because Christianity frowned upon it. The
missionaries wanted the Samoans to live by Christ word but instead they added it to their culture. To
this day tattooing is highly respected in the Samoans culture. In Tonga is where the Samoans and the
Polynesians tattooed. Tattooing was a way of life to the Polynesians, they were tattooing even before
the Europeans came to the South Pacific. The Polynesians and Samoans had some of the most skillful
and intricate tattoos in the entire world. The tattoos typically stood for their religious beliefs and for
warfare. Most of their tattoos were geometric shapes. They were tattooed in a way so they could

Cryptosporidiosis
Intestinal cryptosporidiosis is one of the most significant diarrheal diseases affecting people around
the world. The condition is caused by the oocyst forming protozoan parasite from the genus
Cryptosporidium that has the propensity to survive in and transmit through source waters, making it a
paramount public health threat.
Although the intestine is a primary target in all cases intestinal cryptosporidiosis, there can be
significant differences in the clinical presentation (depending on the host and parasite population). The
major groups at risk include immunocompetent individuals in developed countries, children in
developing countries, as well as immunocompromised hosts (most notably patients with acquired

It is also known that the CD4 T lymphocytes are indispensable for the resolution of acute and chronic
cryptosporidiosis.
Clinical presentation
Symptoms of cryptosporidiosis develop after a period of time called prepatent period (lasting on
average one week) during which the parasites invade the epithelial cells of the intestine and
proliferate. As a result of this invasion, immunocompetent adults usually present with watery diarrhea
that may in certain cases be profuse, prolonged and mucoid.
Accompanying symptoms are analogous to those in other diarrheal illnesses, including (but not
limited to) nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and low grade fever. Sometimes nonspecific
symptoms occur as well, for example weakness, muscle aches, headache, malaise and anorexia.
Although supportive therapy leads to a resolution of the disease, in as many as 40% of cases there is a
potential of chronic symptoms akin to irritable bowel syndrome. Relapses may follow a period
without a diarrhea that can last between several days and several weeks. Other chronic sequelae may
include fatigue, arthralgia and eye

protagonist, is described as a typical superman who s brave and strong. A person admired and feared
by all as well as known to be fearless. But then who would of expected Maxim to become the opposite
of what he is when he declares his love for Elena Gavrilovna. Even a strong person like Maxim has

that someone of his status doesn t deserve her. Towards the secret, Elena doesn t react the way Maxim
imagines, instead she quickly accepts it and is not even fazed one bit by it. In modern day Maxim s
struggle is still common thought for many couples or people in love. There are things that people are
self conscious about and are too ashamed to reveal it to their significant other like Maxim. Fearing
that they would be rejected. There are also many who love their partners no matter what kind of past

The Maximal Oxygen Consumption Test
Introduction
The purpose of the maximal oxygen consumption test is to assess a participant s aerobic power and
fitness. Maximal oxygen is defined as the single highest oxygen consumption elicited during graded
exercise to exhaustion (Adams, 2014). However, peak oxygen is measured during a specific test, but it
may not truly be the highest or maximal oxygen consumption possible (Adams, 2014). To simplify,
every test will show values for peak oxygen consumption; however every test does not always show a
value for maximal oxygen consumption. This could happen if a participant is not able to fully reach
the point of exhaustion due to physical pain symptoms or lack of motivation. Maximal oxygen
consumption is important to understand aerobic fitness because it utilizes many systems in the body
such as pulmonary, muscular, and cardiovascular. According to an article in the Journal of Human
Kinetics, maximal aerobic power is commonly accepted as the best measure of the cardiovascular
systems functional limits (Rowell, 1974) and has been shown to predict mortality from all causes in
healthy (Blair et al., 1989; 1996) and unhealthy individuals (Myers et al., 2002) (Hamlin et al., 2012).
For this lab, the maximal oxygen consumption test used was the Vo2 Max Bruce Protocol test and the
equipment used was a Woodway treadmill.

The data is easy to collect and analyze, and is less time consuming than case control or cohort studies.
Contains multiple variables at the time of the data snapshot.
Not costly to perform and does not require a lot of time.
Weaknesses:

Analysis of The Charge of the Light Brigade Essay

took their light cavalry to the innocent Turkish territory, rather than the guilty Russians. In self

not the six hundred .

war ineffective but they will realise that the noble six hundred should be held in high esteem and
respect. Although the Light Brigade lost the battle they won the moral victory over their critics.
Tennyson questions the authority of war in The Charge of the Light
Brigade . He wrote this poem based on the Battle of Balaclava because a huge mistake was made by
the authoritative figure, Lord Raglen, which caused many deaths. Although the troops knew some one
had blunder d , they did not question it. He wants to show that even though a person is higher, richer
or more powerful than other they can still be vulnerable in making errors. This questions Victorian
authority and whether they are making the right decision concerning the lives of British people. Poets
in the twentieth century have also taken this argument into account most namely in Siegfried Sassoon
s
The General where their leader is described as an incompetent swine . The repetition

Analysis Of The Metamorphosis
Analysis of the Metamorphosis The Metamorphosis can be analyzed in many different ways. One way
that could be looked into is why exactly Gregor is turned into an insect. There are many things that he
could have changed into, like a monkey or a bird for example. But Kafka makes it obvious that Gregor
is a bug although he never says what kind. Bugs can be, more or less, controlled, considered useless,
and gross. To call a person a bug means they can bend easily to another s will and are expendable.
Gregor should have been on the five o clock train but since he misses it he thinks about how the
massagers would have been waiting for the same train and noticed that Gregor wasn t there that he
would have gone to tell someone directly. While he was still trying to get up a few hours later he noted
that someone would be coming soon to check on him and at that moment the doorbell rings to
revealed that the office manager himself has come to Gergor s house. This shows that there are many
people in his office that watch his every move, and can even cause him to be fired just because he
doesn t show up to work one day. The office manager tries to make Gregor feel guilty about staying in
room and making his parents worry about him, all to get Gregor to go to work. But as soon as Gregor
shows himself the office manager backs away and leaves. Telling the whole family right away that he
has lost his job. Although, for the past five years Gregor has been taking care of his family on his

I Am Mallala By Malala Yousafzai
I AM Malala
I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai is a story that shows how a young Muslim girl stood up for
education and changed the world. When Malala Yousafzai was ten years old, the first female prime
minister of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto, was shot dead. Young Malala had witnessed this act of terrorism
on tv, and from that day forward, she promised herself that she would continue the fight for peace and
democracy in Pakistan. Malala went on to be interviewed by her local TV stations and newspapers.
During these interviews, Malala would speak on the topic of education for all. At age 13, Malala s
school was invited to take part in the District Child Assembly swat. Malala was elected speaker of this
group. Together the group passed nine resolutions such as rebuilding schools destroyed by the Taliban.
Malala remained as calm as a summer sea and never took revenge on her attackers. Malala was a
powerful young girl.
To begin with, Malala Yousafzai was a young Muslim girl who believed strongly that everybody
should be educated. During her young life, Malala had to live with death threats and being shot in the
head. Throughout all of her suffering, Malala never complained. During her school days, Malala
realised that people who were often called upon during class were those in the front row. After
noticing this Malala came up with the idea to rotate seats each week to make sure that everyone had a
fair chance to be educated. With the rotation routine everybody

find disease that might represent unrecognized outbreaks (Center for Disease and Control Prevention,

came from Paramount Farms which laboratory testing isolated the outbreak strains of Salmonella

been prevented by the use of superheated steam (SHS) at Paramount Farms. Superheated steam is
vapor heated to extremely high temperatures. This can be generated by the heating of saturated steam
obtained from boiling water. SHS treatment has been shown to be a promising alternative technology
for the tree nuts industry by improving inactivation of foodborne pathogens,[such as E.coli,
Salmonella and L.monocytogenes], on almonds and pistachios while simultaneously reducing
processing time (Ga Hee and Dong Hyun, 2016).

General Electric has invested $50 million in new engine technology, with an additional $1.2 billion to
$1.4 billion being required to help them bring new engine designs to the forefront. General Electric
has also received a $20 million grant from NASA in order for them to create the first tester UDF

In order for the UDF project to become a successful venture, these funds are going to have to come
from the orders for the new engine. This means that the right size aircraft will have to be ordered and
built in order to make the need for the UDF engines rise. If the UDF project succeeds then the
company will be able to experience profits in the range of $600,000 per unit once they are able to
cover the initial amount required to break even. Once they start producing the engines at a rapid rate,
then they will be able to set a specific price and start turning some real profit. The only stipulation will
that they will have to stay ahead of the market and of their competitors in order to retain the majority
of the market share. If the UDF project fails then General Electric will be out its $50 million initial
investment as well as the additional $1.2 billion to $1.5 billion that it would cost to successfully
implement the UDF project. Looking from a non monetary perspective, General Electric would gain
significant market share and an increase in profitability in the area of aircraft engine development. The
success of this adventure would also allow for a broadening of its relationships in the area of aircraft
engines and those that use, sell, and develop them. If this venture were to fail, it would lose a
significant chunk of the market share as well as a big decrease in profitability in

The Different Levels Of Law Enforcement
The Different Levels of Law Enforcement in the United States There are three different level of law
enforcement within the United States who penalizes citizens who violate them. These agencies include
federal, state, and local law enforcement who conducts operation on different levels. Each law
enforcement agency is assigned specific duties within their jurisdiction. In order to maintain peace and
order within the United States law enforcement officers are called to duty to serve day in and day out
to protect public safety. Some believe that law enforcement is unorganized. However, these different
agencies aide each other in certain situation to makes sure the mission is accomplished. For example,

should maintain cooperation with each other in order to maintain balance and order with their

I think the multiple layers of police agencies within the United States benefits and provides better
outcome for the community as a whole. This has allowed some communities to gain the police trust
making it a part of the solution. However, a regional police force which would include different
participants from all communities could be useful during certain cases. For example, a drug dealer is
wanted in one city and is known to operate elsewhere within the state. The local law enforcement has
a lead but cannot execute a warrant based on the limitation of the authority it has. A special organized
crime unit (regional) could be assembled including the different officers from all communities to serve

Medical Malpractice Claims
I ve chosen the topic of medical malpractice for this essay. I chose this topic because it is a topic that I
think someone could disagree with and argue, so therefore it s also one that I can help persuade
someone into thinking I m right about. My question is has medical malpractice affected the level/
delivery of health care does it scaring future physicians away? This topic is important because it
impacts everyone whether they are seeking medical attention or the person providing it. It also affects
the cost of health care and people s access to it. I believe that medical malpractice makes it hard for

Summary Of The Victory Season
The Victory Season: The End of World War II and the Birth of Baseball s Golden Age written by
Robert Weintraub is focused on the 1946 Major League Baseball season after World War II when
America was ready to heal. During the war, parks were empty, the balls were made with fake rubber,
and all of America s favorite players were serving in the war. When players returned, they exchanged
their military uniforms for baseball uniforms and the sport of baseball quickly became a key tool
which helped many American s return to their normal, everyday lives. Parks began to fill up again and
a new era of baseball was born. Although so many soldiers returning at once did cause some issues,
the National League was very competitive and many thrived on it. Weintraub discusses many events
considered to be baseball s best times including: the difficult, yet rewarding transition of baseball
players from military service to the major leagues, The Brooklyn Dodgers breaking the racial
segregation in the league by signing a black man, Jackie Robinson, the introduction of the Mexican
League, in which American players signed with to receive higher salaries, and the 1946 World Series
between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals, where the Cardinals defeated the Sox in the

Descriptive Essay About Rock
One fine, beautiful morning, just as the Sun was rising, Steven hopped out of bed, and went directly to
the place he always goes. The Sunset Beach. Everything was great, but then, his day, no, his life took a
very unexpected turn. Steven is a twenty five year old man. He had lived with his parents for the
majority of his life, but had just moved out within the past year. He has dark brown eyes, and dusty
blonde hair. He is about five six, which is a little short for his age, but it doesn t bother him all that
much. In his spare time, he likes to participate in many city activities, or turn to one of his hobbies.
One hobby that he particularly enjoys is collecting rocks.
Every morning when he goes to Sunset Beach, he brings back about a dozen rock friends, just like he
did this morning. As Steven was walking, he found a beautiful, shiny, bright green Petoskey Stone. He
did not have one in his collection, so he decided to take it home with him. Little did he know that in a
few hours , this rock would change his life forever. Legend says, that whoever holds the magical
Petoskey Stone takes a very unexpected trip everyday at noon. This trip starts their life everyday, and
then one day ends it in a heartbeat. This rock fast forwards through the life of the person that has
possession of it, and continues to until one day it thinks they have lived long enough, and they die.
The scary part is, they never know which day they will be gone forever. Eventually, Steven arrived

The Plan For Public Health And Safety
The next component of the General Plan is the plan for public health and safety which addresses
issues of: Geology and Seismicity, Flooding and Drainage, Noise, Air Installation Land Use
Compatibility, Hazardous Materials, Crime Prevention and Protection Services, Fire Prevention and
Suppression Services, Disaster Preparedness, Emergency Medical Facilities. The issue of geology and
seismicity is important to the Lancaster area at large due to its location being less than ten miles south
of the San Andreas Fault. Major earthquakes in the area present a problem for citizen s safety and
possible property damage. A similar issue is that of flooding and drainage. Because Lancaster exists
within a valley and is relatively flat, the area is prone to flooding. One of the current propositions is to
include flood water basins. The water basins to mitigate for the 100 year flood are essentially large
ditches on the corner of neighborhood streets. When a water basin sits in the middle of a
neighborhood it is not a functional part of the surrounding environment and can become an eyesore in
a community. This probably causes the NIMBY ism around water basins, no matter how beneficial
they may be. Noise is a very prevalent issue in Lancaster, due to the amount of aeronautical activity
conducted on EAFB. The City has rezoned the flight area in order to decrease the amount of overhead
flights in the urbanized areas. This plan is mimicked in the Air Installation Land Use Compatibility
portion.

White Man s Burden Imperialism
Views on Imperialism
Imperialism is the extension of a nation s authority by territorial acquisitions or by the establishment
of economic and political dominance over other nations (American Heritage Dictionary). Both
Imperialists and Anti Imperialists in the late nineteeth century published arguments for or against the
justification of Westerners civilizing less advanced peoples. Western societies Imperialist motives
were to further their own economic and political standings. Humanitarianism outreach and Social
Darwinism were excuses to assert Western dominance. British writer, Rudyard Kipling s poem The
White Man s Burden aimed to persuade Europeans why they could and should civilize primitive non
white people; British Parliament and anti imperialist, Henry Labouchere responds with his own poem,

He supported the imperialist aim that, Westerners shouldered the responsibility for governing and
converting the supposed savages under charge and strove to remake them superior European models
(Mckay, 809). The hope was that these primitive nonwhite people would eventually benefit from
imperialism and modern achievements and higher levels of living (Mckay, 810). The white man s
burden was to send forth the best yet breed the brightest white men to go over to these under
performing primitive countries and work hard at converting and modernizing theses evil and immature
people Kipling refers to as, Half devil and half child (Mckay et al., 810). Kipling s poem makes a case
for imperialism by telling the Europeans it is their moral obligation. It was a burden because the task
would it be easy. The nonwhites will not be open to new ways and the Europeans will have weariness
and the hate of those ye guard (Mckay, 810). This hate for imperialism is very evident in Henry

Molecular and Cellular Behavior
Signal transduction pathways link signal reception with cellular response
Signal transduction pathways regulate what occurs in, between, and amid individual cells. They are
incredibly crucial because they initiate large responses beginning with a single signal. These chemical
signals are called ligands that enter the cell either through active or passive transport. If the ligand is
small and nonpolar (such as nitric oxide, oxygen gas, and carbon dioxide), then it will simply diffuse
through the cell membrane and will attach to an intracellular receptor. However, if the ligand does not
fit into this category it will attach to a membrane receptor. These ligands are specific to each receptor.
This ensures that no ligand will bind to an incorrect receptor. Once a receptor is bound, a signal is
transduced in a way that the cell can acknowledge it. Signal transduction pathways will fundamentally
affect gene expression, change enzyme or protein activity, and possibly cell death.
Membrane Receptors
Membrane receptors span the membrane of the cell. Since hydrophilic molecules cannot simply
diffuse through the cells to send a signal to the cell, they must attach to these receptors to be able to
send a signal inside the cell.
Ligand Gated Ion channel receptor
Specific signal molecules open and close ion channel receptors that permit the passing of ions in and
out of the cell. These ions include Na+, K+, Ca2+, or Cl , necessary for sending chemical signals.
