Maua sold the following number of pineapples in ten days: 25. 41. 24, 35, 28, 20, L40, 35, 45; 50. List the number of pineapples in an ascending order. Representing Data in tables

Representing data in tables Representing data using tally marks Group Activity Grade Six pupils obtained the following marks in a maths test marked out of 20:

Representing data using frequency tables Group Activity In groups of five : Obtain l0 bottle tops of different colours . 2 . Arrange the bottle tops according to their colours. Count and record the number of bottle tops for each colour as in the table shown : Discuss the results and share with other groups. colour Number of bottle tops Blue Black Red green

Note Number of bottles tops The number of times an item appears in the data is called frequency Example The marks scored bų ten pupils in a language test were recorded as: 5, 7, 8, 5, I0, 7, 6, 5, 8, 10.Represent the marks in a frequency table . Solution colour Frequency 5 3 6 1 7 2 88 2 10 1

ASSESSMENT The coins, in shillings, in a save box of a pupil were: 5, I, 40,5, 20, 5, I, 10, 20, 20, 5, 40 . Write the value of the coins in an ascending order ( b) Make a frequency table to represent the i information . 2 . Joshua harvested and recorded the number of tomatoes per plant as follows : 5. 7, 5, 8, 7, 10, 10, 7,10, 8, 8, 6, I0, 8 s Write the number of tomatoes in an ascending order ( b) Show the data in a frequency table . 3 . The mass in grams of babies born in a hospital was recorded as: 3 700, 2 500. 2 600, 3 800. 2 500, 2 600, 2 500, 2 500.3 700, 2 600 . Represent the data in a frequency table . 4 . The amount of milk in litres sold through a milk dispensing machine was: 2 , 5, 3, 2, 4, 5, 2, 1, 2, 1, 1, 5, 4,3, 2 . Show the data in a frequency table.

Representing data using diagrams Representing data through piling Group Activity In groups of five :. Make a row of four different piles of Sh I coins . 2 Relate the height to the number of coins in each pile . 3 . Discuss your observation and share it with other groups . Example 4 Maya had Sh 90, Fatuma Sh 130. Naliaka Sh 110 and Wambua Sh 150.Represent these amounts using piles of Sh 110 coins.

ASSESSMENT 1. Waliaula bought 8 mangoes, 5 oranges, 3 Apple and 6 lemons Using one match box to represent one fruit, represent the fruits in piles . 2 . The colours of 24 pencils in a packet were recorded as: 7red , 2 yellow, 5 black, 7 blue and 3 green. Use match boxes to represent the information through piling.

Representing data using bar graphs group activity The diagram below shows the number of fuit on display during an agricultural show mangoes apple melons oranges pineapple 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1

One block represent one fruit In pairs 1.count the number of fruit of each type that were on display 2. For each type of fruit, draw rectangles of same width anda height equal to the height of the pile . 3 . Discuss your drawing and share it with other groups . Note In the drawing, each pile is represented by a rectangle . ( i ) All the rectangles are of the same width . ( ii) Each rectangle is a bar . ( iv) The drawing is called a bar graph .

Drawing bar graphs Bar graph representing small quantities Group activity The table below shows the colour of cars parked outside a supermarket COLOUR RED BLUE WHITE BLACK NUMBER OF CARS 5 2 7 3

Use the table to draw a bar graph. In groups of five : 1.Draw a vertical and horizontal line and label as shown. 2 . Using I cm to represent one car, find the heights of the bars representing the number of cars for each colour . 3 . Draw bars of the calculated height. 4 . Discuss and share your results with other groups. Number Number of cars colour of cars

Example The table represent animals in waliaulas farm Use 1cm to represent one animal and draw a bar graph to show the information Solution Type of animals cattle goats sheep Donkey Number of animal 6 4 3 2

Assessment The table shows the type and number of trees in a farm. Use the table to draw a bar graph. Type of trees Number of trees Orange Lemon Mango avocado 4 6 7 9

Bar graph representing large quantities Group Activity 8 In groups of five : Discuss how you can draw a height of a bar in centimetres to represent a)12cars b) 30cars c)100cars Share your results with other qroups .

Note To represent a large quantitų using a bar of suitable height, useone centimetre to represent a number of quantities . Example The table below shows the number of peopletreated in a hospital . Using 1cm to represent 10people draw a bar graph to represent the information day mon Tue wen thur Fri Number of people 45 60 73 56 40

Monday is represented by a 4 cm 5 mm bar . Tuesday is represented by a 6 cm bar . Wednesday is represented by a 7 cm 3 mm bar
