Stray Dog Dilemma Mustafa Alp

What is dog ? Dog (Canis lupus familiaris ); It is a carnivorous mammal belonging to the Canidae family, with more than 400 breeds varying in appearance and size. Dogs, one of the subspecies of Gray Wolf (C. lupus), are also close relatives to foxes and jackals.

Since their first encounter, humans have brought to the fore the various beneficial features of dogs through the most primitive forms of genetic engineering and led to the emergence of different dog breeds.

Dogs have been humans' hunting partners, protectors and companions for more than 12 thousand years. Humanity has played an important role in the evolution of different dog breeds according to different needs.

Prevalence of stray dogs in Turkey Although the announced number of stray dogs (current/December, 2023) is 2.8 million, according to the statement of the Izmir Chamber of Veterinarians in 2017, it is estimated that there are 10 million stray dogs, based on the fact that there were 500 thousand stray dogs in Izmir at that time alone.

Stray dogs, feeding on garbage, carry the risk of many diseases, especially rabies. S tray dogs can instigate fear in humans. Fear can lead to various reactions ranging from changing one's path upon seeing a stray dog to experiencing panic attacks and even heart attacks. Effects Of The Problem On Society And The Environment

Stray dogs also harm animals and plants in their natural habitats.

Additionally, stray dogs live in poor conditions. They are harmed by malicious people and inadequate opportunities.

But Despite these conditions, some people argue that dogs should be on the streets. According to them, dogs have the same rights as humans.

How Can We Solve This Problem? A group of people believe that this problem can be solved by catching dogs and neutering them. H owever , many scientific studies show that this method is both inefficient and does not produce results.

Many developed countries collect stray dogs and keep them in shelters. These dogs are kept for adoption for a certain period of time. If there is no adoption at the end of this period, they are put to sleep.
