Catharsis Catharsis is getting rid of unhappy memories or strong emotions such as anger or sadness by expressing them in some way. Yellow Pond

Origin of Catharsis The term comes from the Greek katharsis meaning " purification " or " cleansing ." Yellow Pond

Usage of the Term The term is used in therapy as well as in literature. Yellow Pond

Why? The purpose of catharsis is to bring about some form of positive change in the individual's life. Yellow Pond

Examples Outbursts of Crying Rage Tantrum Yellow Pond

Josef Breuer The term has been in use since the time of the Ancient Greeks, but it was Sigmund Freud's colleague Josef Breuer who was the first to use the term to describe a therapeutic technique. Yellow Pond

Cathartic treatment Breuer developed what he referred to as a "cathartic" treatment for hysteria. Yellow Pond

Cathartic treatment Josef Breuer treatment involved having patients recall traumatic experiences while under hypnosis. By consciously expressing emotions that had been long repressed, Breuer found that his patients experienced relief from their symptoms . Yellow Pond

Freud Freud believed that catharsis could play an important role in relieving symptoms of distress. Yellow Pond

In their book Studies on Hysteria , Freud and Breuer defined catharsis as "the process of reducing or eliminating a complex by recalling it to conscious awareness and allowing it to be expressed." Yellow Pond

Catharsis still plays a role today in Freudian psychoanalysis. Yellow Pond

The APA defines catharsis as "the discharge of effects connected to traumatic events that had previously been repressed by bringing these events back into consciousness and re-experiencing them." Yellow Pond

Catharsis is a concept in psychoanalytic theory wherein the emotions associated with traumatic events come to the surface. Yellow Pond

Catharsis is associated with the elimination of negative emotions, affect, or behaviors associated with unacknowledged trauma. Yellow Pond

Psychological Benefits of Catharsis No studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Breuer’s original concept of catharsis. But some of the benefits of catharsis Feeling lighter Feeling liberated Feeling Uplifted Feeling peaceful Less emotional reactive More self Confident Decreased physical and emotional symptoms Shiney eyes Happiness - Smiling and laughing etc Yellow Pond

Ashley Brown listed 16 catharsis techniques Music Punching Bag Psychodrama Art Primal Therapy Reliving Traumatic Events Writing Reading Literature and Watching Films Volunteering Psychoanalysis Psychodynamic Therapy Emotion-Focused Therapy Rituals Humor Confession Exercise Yellow Pond

1. Music Throughout history, music has been used to help people deal with emotions. Music is in itself an emotional experience. When we feel sad and listen to a sad song, we may feel better. It brings catharsis as it releases those sad feelings and clears the way for more positive emotions. Yellow Pond

2. Punching Bag There was a time when parents of children with anger issues were advised to buy their children a punching bag. In theory, children would achieve catharsis and their anger would go away if the child released their anger by hitting the punching bag. Scientists are still researching this, but it may be a good idea for adults instead. Yellow Pond

3. Psychodrama Psychodrama is a type of therapy in which participants act out troubling events from their past. As the person in question becomes involved in the scene of their past hurt, they may relive the feelings they overlooked back then, finally experiencing them fully and letting them out. Yellow Pond

4. Art Creating art can have a cathartic effect, too. Every art medium has the power to help both amateur and professional artists release emotions. One person may spatter paint on a canvas, flinging away their anger as they do. Another might draw heavy black slashes with a charcoal pencil. Yellow Pond

5. Primal Therapy: In primal therapy, the goal is to release the person's earliest childhood suffering. The therapist may instruct the patient to express the feelings they've been hiding all of these years by directing their anger toward an imaginary parent sitting in an empty chair. Yellow Pond

6. Reliving Traumatic Events: In therapy or on your own, you may reach a point when you relive a past event. For example, it can happen automatically when you're forced to return to the scene of a trauma. As you're confronted with the details of an environment where you once felt threatened, you can now experience those feelings freely, knowing that the threat is in the past. Yellow Pond

7. Writing: Writing can be highly therapeutic. Many psychologists and mental health programs encourage journaling for this very reason. Whether you're writing directly about your experiences in a journal or creating poetry to express those emotions through poetic words and images, the release is the same. Yellow Pond

8. Reading Literature and Watching Films Writing and acting can provide catharsis, but so can experiencing the results of those creative endeavors. When we read a well-written book, we may find that the author expresses a familiar feeling so clearly that it brings up feelings we thought we had long been buried. The same can be true of a well-acted movie. Yellow Pond

9. Volunteering Sometimes, when someone has a horrible experience, they deal with it by volunteering to help others. This also involves community activism, which can provide catharsis as well. Yellow Pond

10. Psychoanalysis: Sigmund Freud developed the psychoanalytic method, and much of his work centered on bringing about catharsis in order to promote psychological healing. Now, psychoanalysts use catharsis, but only as the first step in helping clients understand themselves, so they can make better decisions. Yellow Pond

11. Psychodynamic Therapy: A psychodynamic therapist encourages their patient to talk about past experiences and emotions. The goal is to go deeper than the person usually does in their everyday life, so they can deal with the root problems of their present difficulties. Yellow Pond

12. Emotion-Focused Therapy Emotion-focused therapy is often used to help couples improve their relationships. It works by allowing patients to develop emotional intelligence. This happens as the two people re-experience past hurts, put them into perspective, and find new ways to respond to them. Yellow Pond

13. Rituals: Throughout human history, people have used rituals to deal with mental and emotional problems. This can happen individually, or it can happen in groups. Yellow Pond

14. Humor Humor helps people release their emotions, often in a raucous burst of laughter. This is something that's easy to do by watching TV or a movie, talk to someone, or do a number of other things to get a good laugh. Yellow Pond

15. Confession Telling our life story with all of our secret thoughts, actions, and experiences can release emotions that we vaguely knew were there. This may also be true in religious ceremonies, even though the main goal isn't emotional release. Yellow Pond

16. Exercise: Although catharsis is an emotional release, it brings about many changes in the body as well. The cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and musculoskeletal systems are all affected as pent-up emotions are released. Some people find that they can achieve catharsis by exercising or doing something physically demanding that promotes the same types of physical changes. Yellow Pond
