VIEW OF HUMAN NATURE Family Structure: Every family has a structure that dictates how it organizes and interacts. Influence of Structure: The family structure impacts its members positively or negatively. Hierarchical Structure: When a family has a clear hierarchical structure, relationships among members are generally positive. Lack of Structure: Without a defined structure, families experience increased stress, rigidity, chaos, and dysfunction. Crisis Situations: In the absence of structure, developmental or situational events can lead to family crises. Coalitions: Alliances between specific members against another member may form. Cross-Generational Alliances: Alliances between members of different generations can occur. Impact on Growth: Such alliances (coalitions or cross-generational) hinder the healthy growth of individuals and the family as a whole. www.seribangash.com 2/8

ROLE OF THE COUNSELOR Role of Practitioners: Structural family counseling practitioners act as both observers and experts in making interventions. Objective: Their goal is to modify and change the underlying structure of a family. Focus on Changes: They advocate for structural changes within the family unit, particularly in interactional patterns within subsystems like the marital dyad. Boundary Setting: Practitioners work on establishing clear boundaries among family members. Position of Leadership: Counselors join the family in a leadership role, mapping the family's structure in their minds. Assessment and Intervention: They identify dysfunctional patterns and work to help the family change these patterns. www.seribangash.com 3/8

GOALS Emphasis on Action: Focus is on taking action rather than gaining insight to make the family more functional. Updating Rules: Replace outdated rules with new ones that align with the family’s current realities. Subsystem Differentiation: Stress on clear distinctions and differentiation between family subsystems. Parental Authority: Special attention is given to ensuring parents are in charge of their children. Cultural Context Change: Successful interventions lead to changes in the family’s cultural context. www.seribangash.com 4/8

TECHNIQUES Family Interaction: Work with how family members interact to address nonproductive behaviors and disengaged or enmeshed positions. Physical Environment: Rearrange the physical environment to prompt different behaviors, such as having family members face each other during conversations. Reframing: Help the family view problems from a different, more positive perspective. Behavioral Labeling: For instance, a child’s misbehavior might be reframed from “incorrigible” to “naughty” to reduce the perception of pathology. www.seribangash.com 5/8

Other structural TECHNIQUES www.seribangash.com Punctuation: Selectively describe a transaction, such as declaring a person competent at a specific moment, like when they are silent. Unbalancing: Support an individual or subsystem against the rest of the family (e.g., supporting a daughter’s request for a later curfew). Enactment: Bring problematic behaviors into treatment sessions to demonstrate and challenge existing patterns and rules. Boundary Making: Create psychological boundaries between individuals or subsystems to enhance development and functioning. Intensity: Use strong affect, repeated intervention, or prolonged pressure to change maladaptive transactions and achieve goals. Restructuring: Alter family hierarchies or interaction patterns to prevent the maintenance of problems (e.g., uniformly refusing to obey certain requests). Adding Cognitive Constructions: Include verbal components like advice, pragmatic fictions, and paradoxes to complement the action-oriented approach and motivate change 6/8

STRENGTHS AND CONTRIBUTIONS Versatility: Suitable for families across different socioeconomic levels. Effectiveness: Proven effective in treating issues such as juvenile delinquency, alcoholism, and anorexia. Cultural Sensitivity: Appropriate for use in multicultural settings. Clarity: Provides clear definitions of terms and procedures, making it easy to apply. Pragmatic Focus: Emphasizes symptom removal and practical reorganization of the family. www.seribangash.com 7/8

LIMITATIONS www.seribangash.com Complexity and Focus: Critics argue that the approach may lack complexity, could be sexist, and focuses too much on the present. Influence of Strategic Therapy: There are concerns that structural therapy overlaps with or is influenced by strategic family therapy, making it difficult to distinguish between the two. Counselor Control: The counselor’s control over the change process may limit the family’s empowerment, potentially affecting their long-term adjustment and change 8/8
