A PAPER PRESENTATION TO YORK AND SCABOROUGH TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST ON IDENTIFYING HOW I CAN POSITIVELY INFLUENCE PRACTICE PLACEMENTS WITHIN MY CLINICAL AREA. By Obumneme Michael Ngene . 3 rd May,2023. .

How you can positively influence practice placements within your clinical area. A clinical placement is where physiotherapy student applies their knowledge to practice, learns key skills and achieves the required competencies for registration. Learning in the contextual setting of clinical practice which enables them to confront many of the challenges and issues related to caring. Practice is where lifelong learning is promoted and enhanced. Definition and purpose. Professional responsibility,. Benefits to individual educators/ teams, students, business and organizations. The wider profession.

INTRODUCTION The demand for physiotherapy clinical placements is rising which requires innovative approaches and an understanding of clinical placement models. With so many challenges and opportunities for students in Physiotherapy, it is important to consider the required experiences in all physiotherapy units to enable the development of clinical skills and facilitate the integration of theory with practice. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy(CSP) has prepared this briefing - Ensuring sufficient practice placement capacity for physiotherapy students - in response to indications that the provision of sufficient practice placements for pre-registration physiotherapy students is becoming an increasing challenge in some geographical areas. It seeks to promote a collaborative approach to addressing these challenges and highlights the importance of making the case for supporting student practice education within workforce planning processes.

I Educator-student relationship. Learning contracts and learning outcomes. Assessment . Identify the learning opportunities that are available. Identify Students learning needs in relation to each practice placement. Revise the theory learnt on the programme or module and note its applicability to the practice placement. Identify members of the multi-disciplinary team and how they can contribute to the achievement of the students learning needs. Make the student feel welcomed and truly part of the team. not just the student’ but a valued colleague with a meaningful contribution. What do you think makes a good placement for physiotherapy students ?

How can you ensure that you provide a placement which best meets varying learning styles and needs without having a negative impact on clinical care? Students are required to gain 1000 hours on placement in order to achieve registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council. The CSP's article on experience explains various roles that can be included. Current settings that physiotherapy students currently gain experience in are NHS settings. Football clubs The Ministry of Defence (MOD) and military units. Private hospital groups / large private practices Placements in social care and the voluntary sector Practice placements overseas

How would you support a struggling student? contribute to a supportive learning environment and quality learning outcomes for students. be approachable, supportive and aware of how students learn best. have knowledge and information of the student’s programme of study and practice assessment tools. be willing to share their knowledge of patient care. identify specific learning opportunities that are available within the placement area. ensure that the learning experience is a planned process. ensure that time is identified for initial interviews with students in order to assess learning needs and develop a learning agreement. identify with students their core competencies and outcomes to be achieved.

How would you identify and implement improvement around the student experience? Students should be actively involved in the process of clinical reasoning, rather than just passively observing. Involving them integrally in history taking, assessments, and treatments, and having them involved as a partner with you on patient management can enhance their understanding of real world practice. Ask students to provide assessment and treatment plans for clients, even if they do not provide the actual service. This will allow you to assess their knowledge, clinical reasoning and planning skills. Use of templates such as the Clinical Reasoning Model so that students complete an in-depth analysis of the patients they see/observe so that they get the most out of the learning experience. Where applicable, Students should assist therapists with work at local sporting clubs and group therapy classes (e.g. hydrotherapy)
