Formal garden A formal garden is laid out in a symmetrical or a geometrical pattern. First plan is made on paper and then land is selected accordingly. Land is levelled. Roads and paths cut at right angle. Hedges, edges and topiary are trimmed. If there is a plant on the left hand side, a similar plant should be planted at the opposite place on right hand side i.e., mirror image of each other. Mughal, Persian, Italian, French gardens comes under formal garden.
