What is Subject gateway An organized collection of resources on a given subject along with a retrieval mechanism. Sets of web pages containing lists of links to resources. Browsing access to the resources via a subject structure.

Why Subject gateways Internet as a whole is not well organised. Complex library searches because of cross functions and likes between online catalogue, journal, aggregator, databases, e-resources etc. Increasing expectations of users. Library websites get congested with ample content, duplication of services. Web publishing is very careless in authenticating sources. Huge amount of information is handled by various search engines.

Developments Follett Report DESIRE (Development of a European service for information on Research and Education Project). Electronic Libraries Programme (eLib) ( SOSIG, ADAM, EEVL, OMNI, BizEd ) Resource Discovery Network (RDN) . ( Altis, Artfact, GEsource, Pslgate ) ROADS (Resource Organization and Discovery in Subject-based Services)

Criteria Each resource selected is evaluated against quality selection criteria. Resources are classified using different range of schemes. Metadata are provided based on a particular standard. Resources are described often by library subject specialists. Currency of resources is checked by link checking software (e.g. ROADS), databases such as OMNI. Institutional commitments are the vital component for continued development of a subject gateway.

Characteristics It is quality controlled information services. Generally limited to specific subjects. Defined targeted group Rich resources description containing relevant information Distributed cataloguing - scattered group of subject specialists contributed to database. Use of open standards to support cooperation with other services e.g. cross searching. Weeding or editing of older resources. A bulletin board service for user discussions and regular email updates and mailing lists should form an integral part of a Subject Gateway.
