1958 - Martial law declared and General Ayyub Khan takes over. 1960 - General Ayyub Khan becomes president. 1969 - General Ayyub Khan resigns and General Yahya Khan takes over. 1970 - Victory in general elections in East Pakistan for breakaway Awami League, leading to rising tension with West Pakistan. 1973 - Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto becomes prime minister . 1978 - General Zia becomes president . 1985 - Martial law and political parties ban lifted. 1988 November - Benazir Bhutto's PPP wins general election . 1990 – Benazir’s government removed, Nawaz sharif takes over Political History of Pakistan. 1993 - President Khan and Prime Minister Sharif both resign under pressure from military. General election brings Benazir Bhutto back to power. 1997 - Nawaz Sharif returns as prime minister after his Pakistan Muslim League party wins elections. 1999 April - Benazir Bhutto and her husband convicted of corruption and given jail sentences 1999 October - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif overthrown in military coup led by General Pervez Musharraf . 2001 20 June - Gen Pervez Musharraf names himself president while remaining head of the army. He replaced the figurehead president, Rafiq Tarar , who vacated his position earlier in the day after the parliament that elected him was dissolved. 2008 September - Asif Ali Zardari elected by legislators as Pakistan's new president. i . Importance of common man:- common man enjoy a prestigious position in democracy. Since the fate of rulers is decided by the common men, they have acquired an important position in democratic form of government . ii. Security of country:- revolts and riots are major threats for the stability of the any government. Since the people themselves rule in democracy, the possibility of revolts and riots is very less in the democratic form of government. Moreover, the people irrespective of caste and religion become united for the defense of their country in democratic form of government. Advantages of Democracy to Pakistan 8

iii. Efficient form of government: - Responsible form of governments, to political scientists, is considered as an efficient form of government. Since the rulers, in democracy, are responsible and are accountable to the people, it can be called as an efficient form of government. iv. Based upon the concept of equality: - Unlike the Aristocracy which stands for the rule of only few people while the others are regarded as to be ruled, democracy believes in equality. It, on contrary, provides all rights and liberties to all citizens alike. Advantages of Democracy 9

v. Attains progress with peace: - Monarchy and aristocracy also assure progress of country but they underestimate peace. Democracy, on the other hand, guarantees both – peace and progress of a country. It enables all the people to attain progress in different walks of life. Advantages of democracy 10

Democracy is better for Pakistan since it is what the majority want. If implemented properly, it will serve for the benefit of the nation, as seen in the past Conclusion 11
