Theme and Subject Matter
uIts theme is Resurrection and the Hereafter.
uAt the outset, the people have been aroused and alarmed, saying: "The Great Disaster! What is the Great Disaster? And what do you know what the Great Disaster is?”
uThus, after preparing the listeners for the news of the dreadful calamity, Resurrection is depicted
uOn that Day people will be running about in confusion and bewilderment just like so many scattered moths around a light
uThe mountains will be uprooted and will fly about like carded wool.
uWhen Allah's Court is established in the Hereafter and the people are called upon to account for their deeds.
uThe people whose good deeds are found to be heavier than their evil deeds, will be blessed with bliss and happiness, and the
uBut whose good deeds are found to be lighter than their evil deeds, will be cast into the deep pit full of burning fire.
Meanings of Qari’ah
uQara’ais when two things hit each other violently and make a disturbing noise. It makes you scared or startled
uIt is also used for a tough situation when a loud noise has taken your peace away.
uWhen you insult someone and humiliate someone -it is a qara'abecause it startles and disturbs this person.
uA car crash can also be a Qari'ahif two cars collide; because it makes a bang sound and it startles/shocks the one who sees it happen.
uQara’aal baab–a Knock on the door -in the middle of the night. So people wake up in the middle of the night, startled, scared, and they don't know who or what is at the door.
uSo a lot of things are happening on Judgment Day, and al Qari'ahis one of the descriptions Allah uses to describe the horror of that Day
Allah gives deeper meaning to
Qari’ahthrough Quran
uAllah uses the word al Qari'ah-even though the Arabs knew what the word meant, and they even used it in normal speech.
uYet Allah is making them wonder what the Qari'ahis
uSo He makes a word from the Arabic language have one meaning, and then He gives it an even deeper meaning after that through the Qur’an
uSo Allah has made the word Qari'a-which referred to a loud startling noise -into a word which reminds you of the calamity of Judgment Day
u-A lot of things will strike against each other (Qari’ah) -The sun will clash with the moon, the oceans, earth, seas, graves, the earthquake (mentioned in surah Zilzal) -everything is being rattled.
uThe Day of Great Clash
On the Day of Judgment, trumpet
will be blown three time
u1-Nafkhat faz’ -The first time the Trumpet is blown is when Allah commands the horn to be blown -there will be terror on the Earth. At this time, all the believers' souls will have been taken away and only the worst of people will remain on the Earth.
u2-Fa sa'iqa-The second time the horn is blown: everything on Earth will die immediate And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills.
u3--Nufikhafis-soor-The third time the horn will be blown, and everyone will be brought back to life, the Qari'ahwill occur. This is the one most often mentioned in the Qur’an. After 3rdblowing, they will at once be standing, looking on.[Zumar36:38
uSo it shall only be a single cry, when lo! they shall see. [Saffat37:19]
uWhen Allah refers to the loud sounds and scolding -it refers to the 3rd trumpet (soor)
Similarities between Surah
Haaqqahand Surah al Qari'ah
u1 -A unique parallel between this surah (Qari'ah) and surah al Haqqahis that each surahs' first 3 ayaatare very similar in style.
uAl Haqah, Mal Haaqah, wama adraakamal haaqah? -
uThe Inevitable Reality, What Inevitable Reality? And what will tell you what the Inevitable Reality is? [Surah Haqah69:1-3]
uAl Qari'ah, mal Qari'ah, wama adrakamal Qari'ah?
u-The Startling Calamity, What Startling Calamity? And what will tell you what the startling calamity is? [Surah Qari'ah1-3]
u2 -The 4th time al Qari'ahis mentioned is in surah al Haaqqah.
uThamud and 'Ad people denied the Qari'ah[the striking Hour of Judgement]! [Haqqa)
Ayah I Al-Qariyahاﻟْﻘَﺎرِﻋَﺔُ -101:1
uOpinion 1:Some said; there is omission which is that the Qari'ah(is on its
way to you.) Certainly, the Qari'ah/ calamity is coming.
uOpinion 2: Al Qari'ah! The Calamity! [i.e. If there is a fire in a building, you
don't say a long sentence; "there is a fire in the other room so you should
get out."
uNo, you just shout “ Fire”
uWe can't know what the Qari'ah(loud calamity) is until the one who told us
about it tells us. So Allah tells us;
uWhat calamity? And what will give you a clue what the startling calamity
is?
uThe suspense builds up. So Allah answers what it is in the upcoming ayat
Qari'ahdefinition
uAl-Shaukaniwrote-Qarmeans to strike with great strength purposely. It is one of the names of Judgment Day. Because on that Day -hearts will be rattled on that Day out of fear.
uAllah repeated it 3 times to make it heavier (takhfeem), greater (ta'dheem) and scarier.
uShawkanialso said:Ayah1: al Qari'ahcould be used to say the Loud Calamity.Butpeople might say; 'so what, it is a calamity just like any other calamity'
uAyah 2 and 3: mal Qari'ah?
uWama adraakamal qari'ah? =it is not like any other calamity, what will give you an idea of what this loud calamity really is?
uSo the 1st ayah is a statement of alert, and the 2nd and 3rd ayaatemphasize how big of a calamity this Qari'ahreally is -A calamity which has never been experienced before.
uWhat will give you an idea what that Qari'ahis?Yourother calamities are nothing compared to the intensity of this one.
uAl Aloosiexplained -Qari'ahis that which rattles people out of terror and fear. When this happens in the sky -it is inshiqaqand infitar. Stars -intithar(antatharat). Sun -takweer. Mountains -nusifat.
It is the Day when people will be like
moths, dispersed,
uFarash(plural offar-rasha) -moths, and bugs
uMoths and bugs which try to hit thelight when you switch it on.
uAllah is telling us peoplewill be like moths onthis Day. Little tiny bugs going around in different
directions.
u-Mabthoothmeans dispersed. When thereare many countless bugs running into different directions,
even bumping into each other. This is how us humans willbecome on this Day -when wehear the loud
startling Qari’ahcalamity.
uIt is said people are compared to these moths, because when they fly-they don't move in the same
direction (unlike birds which fly together in the same direction as aflock).
uJust when people come out of their graves -they will disperse like bugs -you see all the motion and
dispersing, just like many bugs flyin different directions if you strike (Qari'ah) at them
وَﺗَﻜُﻮنُ اﻟْﺠِﺒَﺎلُ ﻛَﺎﻟْﻌِﮭْﻦِ اﻟْﻤَﻨﻔُﻮش –101:5
And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.
u'Ihn-wools of different textures. InArab society, Wool was used more often than Cotton (since cotton
was harder toget hold ofexcept through it beingimported).
uManfoosh(nafasha)card and scrape fibreinto fine lines. Really fine fibresof the mountains fly in the
air.SoAllah is describing the tough mountainsas becoming fine/thin wool on this Day, which will become
so light -that its thin / weightless pieces fly into the air.
uThe mountains [from different locations] of different colors will beslammed together, andscrape against
each othercausing different pieces of weightless wool tofloat in the air.
uSo the Mountains move on this Day and collide with each other-causing them to be like mixed wools of
different (mountain) colors
u.In the old times -people would beat/strike wool aggressively (like a Qari'ah) to flatten itout for clothing.
ﻓَﺄَﻣﱠﺎ ﻣَﻦ ﺛَﻘُﻠَﺖْ ﻣَﻮَازِﯾﻨُﮫُ -101:6
Then as for one whose scales are
heavy [with good deeds]
uMawazeencan be plural ofeither;
ua-Meezaan-a scale(one side has a weight, and theother scale has what is weighed by on theotherside [i.e.
sugar, or fruits etc])-
ub-Mawzoon(ism maf'ool)-what is going to be weighed. Most scholars incline to Mawzoonin the context of
this ayah.
uEvil deeds will have no weight, and theonly thing that will have weight is gooddeeds
uAnd We shall set up balancesof justice on the Day of Resurrection, thennone will be dealt with unjustly
inanything. And if there be the weight of amustard seed, We will bring it. AndSufficient are We
asReckoners.
u[Ambiya21:47)
Ma’arifulQuran
uMufti Muhammad Shafee’ (RA) says in his tafsir-
uIf youwant your deeds to be acceptedby Allah, make sure they are;
u1 -Sincerelyfor Allah's sake.
u2 -Following the Sunnah/way of Allah's Messenger, Muhammad(Sal Allahu
alayhiwasalam).
uThe closer you are infollowing the Sunnah, and the more sincere you are toAllah
in that -themoreheavier your deeds become on thescale. (even if they aresmall
continuous good deeds).
uO Allah, make our good deeds heavy...the deeds put on the scale,if they are
heavy..
ﻓَﮭُﻮَ ﻓِﻲ ﻋِﯿﺸَﺔٍ رﱠاﺿِﯿَﺔٍ -101:7
He will be in a pleasant life.
u'Eesha(commonly translated as 'life) -’ aysh-have a life with no worry of food or shelter.
uHayat -also means life
u,But ‘Eeshais an easy life with no problems.ouare not dependant, The necessities are not needed because
youhave everything.(In Urdu, todo 'Eysh' is to 'livea life free ofworry' -and it comes fromthis Arabic word
'Eesha.)eesha-no worries, a life free of concern. This life is alsoused to describe animals in jungles and
forests because there isno lack of food(prey) or shelter there forthem. It comes in plenty.
uRaaddiyah-the one who is pleased.-A lifefull of pleasure and contentment. But you arenot mentioning the
person, rather you are just describing 'pleasure’. By saying Raaddiyah-you are making it
ua human life which is alwayssatisfiedpleased and full of pleasure and joy
وَأَﻣﱠﺎ ﻣَﻦْ ﺧَﻔﱠﺖْ ﻣَﻮَازِﯾﻨُﮫُ -101:8
But as for one whose scales are light
ukhaf-fa,takhfeef-lightened
uAllah wishes to lighten (the burden) for you; and manwas created weak.[Nisa4:28]
uIn this ayah -He is telling us He wants to make our lives lighter/easier for us by giving us commands.
uOn Judgment Day -Allah wants to lighten (khafeef) ourburdens of bad deeds by encouraging us to do good
deeds in thislife, so our scales become heavywith good deeds only
uAnd as for the one whose scales became lightened..
u(the ayah stops, so youpauseand think deeply about such aperson)

ﻣﱡﮫُ ھَﺎوِﯾَﺔٌ –101:9
His refuge will be an abyss
uHe will have his Um in Hawiyah(pit, i.e. Hell).
uHawiyah-huwwa–to fall into a steep Canyon
uA predator bird like a hawk -dives at full speed tocatch its prey at the bottom of avalley.
uThis diving is faster than justfalling, because it uses its muscle and wing strength (other thanjust gravity) -
to diveto the bottom. Forcing itself, launching itself down
uAl Madh-harisaid -This canyon isso deep down in hell, only Allah knows its full depth [itiscommonly
translated as
u'bottomless pit’.)
uArab idiom: If someone is having areally reallyhard time, the arabswould say to such a person: huwat
ummuhu
(his mother fell off a cliff) and dived into a deep canyon (and died). That’s how depressed this person looks
Example of mother
uUmmu-hu [hisMother)Hell is his Mother
uA child runs towards his mother.
u.Who wants to run towards the hellfire? Nobody.
uBut hell is now their mother -where their body will fall at speed
u.A mother wraps herself around her child, to protect it, and she doesn't let it go.
uAnd when the mother is carrying the baby in pregnancy, the babyis protected inside of her and itcannot
come out of her.
uTheperson is trapped in this mother ofa hell, who holds him tightly,
uHelldoes notlet him escape her grip.
وَﻣَﺎ أَدْرَاكَ ﻣَﺎ ھِﯿَﮫْ -101:10
And what can make you know what
that is?
uAr-Razi wrote:
uIn the beginning, al Qari'ahisa word known to the arabs, so itcan be thought about.
uBut Hawiyahis distanced from us (it is adeep, steep and downhill canyon off a cliff)-
uSo itis distanced from us by Allah using Hiyya(she) [when Hedescribed hell] –
uSince 3rdperson is used in language for distancing the reader/hearer to the character [in comparison to if
1stor 2ndperson speech was used.
ﻧَﺎرٌ ﺣَﺎﻣِﯿَﺔٌ –101:11
It is a Fire, intensely hot.
u(It is) a Fire Blazing fiercely!
uHe asks the question (wama adraakama hiyyah}
u-What will make you know what itis? in thepreviousayah.
uHe answers it in this one;(It is) a Fire Blazing fiercely!
uAllah's Messenger said [meaning];
u“This fire of yours which is lit by the sons of Adam is one seventieth part of the fire of Hell.”
uThey said: “By Allah, if it was like this that would be sufficient.”
uHesaid: “It is sixty-nine times worse than that, each time as hot as this (worldlyfire).” Narrated by al-
Bukhaari, 3265; Muslim,2843.
