What is Suture ??? A suture is a strand or thread of material used to approximate tissues and also to ligate blood vessels. A suture attached to needle is referred to as STICK TIE A  FREE TIE  is a single strand of suture handed to the surgeon. When a  FREE TIE  is placed on a tip of forcep or instrument it is considered as TIE ON PASSER Suturing is the act of sewing or bringing tissues orflaps edges together and holding them inapposition until normal healing takes place.Sutures help the wound to withstand normalfunctional stresses and to resist wound reopening

Ideal  Characteristics Of Suture Material It should have uniform diameter . Uniforms diameter eliminates breaking point & provides uniform higher tensile strength. It should possess & maintain adequate tensile strength until it's purpose is over. It should produce knots which hold securely without cuting or slipping . There should not be fraying of ends. It should excite minimum tissue reaction (inert). It should not create  favourable   environment for bacterial growth .

Ideal  CharacteristicsOf Suture Material It should be   non allergic  , non electrolytic  and  non carcinogenic . It should facilitate  easy handling . It should be the material that can be  easily sterilized retaining  it's  strength and  piablity   andwithout alteration of its   physico - chemical properties . It should be freely available and  cost effective. It should have  low capillarity action It should be  resistant to shrinking tissue  as tissue heals.
