Swami Vivekananda's name was Narendra. He was born in an aristocratic & traditional Bengali family of
Kolkata on Makar Sankranti, 12 January 1863. He was one of the 9 siblings.
Narendra's father Vishwanath Datt - an attorney at the Kolkata HC & mother Bhuvaneswari Devi was a
devout housewife.
Grandfather Durgacharan Datt was a Sanskrit & Persian scholar who became a monk at the age of 25.
Narendra was interested in spirituality from a young age, used to meditate & pray deities such as Shiv, Ram
& Mahavir Hanuman. He was fascinated by wandering ascetics & monks. The progressive, rational attitude
of his father & religious temperament of his mother helped shape his personality & thought process.
Narendra as a child was naughty & restless, his parents often had difficulties controlling him. His mother
use to say, "I prayed to Shiva for a son & he sent me one of his demons"
SWAMI VIVEKANANDA'S CHILDHOOD
Ramakrishna Mission has converted
it into a museum & cultural centre.
Swami Vivekananda was born here,
spent his childhood & pre-monastic life.
SWAMI VIVEKANANDA'S ANCESTRAL HOME
In 1871 at the age of 8, Narendra enrolled at Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar's Metropolitan
Institution where he went to school until his family moved to Raipur in 1877.
In 1879, after his family's return to Kolkata, he was the only student to receive 1st division marks
in the Presidency College entrance exam.
He studied Western logic, philosophy & European history at the General Assembly's Institution.
He was an avid reader in a wide range of subjects including philosophy, religion, history &
literature. He was interested in Hindu scriptures including the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad
Gita, Ramayan, Mahabharat & Purans. He was trained in Indian classical music & regularly
participated in physical exercises, sports.
SWAMI VIVEKANANDA'S EDUCATION
In 1881, Narendra passed the Fine Arts exam & completed Bachelor of Arts degree in 1884.
Narendra studied the works of copious scientists. He was fascinated with the evolutionism of
Herbert Spencer & corresponded with him translating his book Education in Bengali ( Shiksha )
While studying Western philosophers, he learned Sanskrit scriptures & Bengali literature as well.
William Hastie ( principal of the college from where Narendra graduated ) wrote, "Narendra is
really a genius. I've travelled far & wide but haven't come across a lad of his talents & possibilities,
even in German universities, among philosophical students. He's bound to make his mark in life."
SWAMI VIVEKANANDA'S EDUCATION
participated in physical exercises, sports.
Narendra's first introduction to Ramkrishna Paramhans occurred in
a literature class at General Assembly's Institution when Professor
William Hastie was lecturing on the poem, The Excursion.
While explaining the word "trance" in the poem, Hastie suggested
students to visit Ramkrishna Paramhans for understanding the true
meaning. This prompted Narendra to visit Ramkrishna Paramhans.
His father's sudden death left the family bankrupt. Narendra became
one of the poorest students in his college. He unsuccessfully tried to
find work & questioned God's existence, but found solace in
Ramkrishna Paramhans & his visits to Dakshineswar increased.
TURNING POINT IN SWAMI VIVEKANANDA'S LIFE
Shri Ramkrishna Paramhans
transformed Narendra into Swami
Vivekananda
In late 1881 / early 1882, Narendra went to Dakshineswar & met Ramkrishna Paramhans. This
proved to be a turning point in his life. He was attracted by Ramkrishna Paramhans' personality &
began to frequently visit him.
Once, Narendra requested Ramkrishna Paramhans to pray goddess Kali for their family's financial
welfare. Ramkrishna Paramhans suggested him to pray himself. Narendra went to the temple thrice,
but failed to pray for any kind of worldly necessities. He ultimately prayed for true knowledge &
devotion.
Narendra gradually grew ready to renounce everything for realising God & accepted Ramkrishna
Paramhans as his Guru. Narendra was influenced by him & learnt that all living beings were an
embodiment of the divine self; therefore, service to God could be rendered by service to humankind.

Swami Vivekananda, the Orange-monk who exercised the most wonderful influence over his auditors".

rhythmical utterance he gave them."

Vivekananda attracted widespread attention in the press, which called him the "Cyclonic monk from
India".

message of "Daridra Narayan" to indicate that service to
poor is service to God.
The Principles of Upanishads & Yog in Bhagavad Gita
reinterpreted in the light of Ramkrishna Paramahams' Life
