The diversity of Living Things Documentary

classify taxonomy characteristics diversity fascinating To put things into groups based on their similarities. The librarian classified the books by subject, so it was easy to find the one I needed. Review Vocabulary The science of classifying living things. Special qualities or features that make something different from other things. The state of having many different types of things. Very interesting and exciting. Scientists use taxonomy to understand the relationships between different types of animals. The characteristics of a dog include barking, wagging its tail, and having four legs. The rainforest is known for its amazing diversity of plants and animals. Learning about space is fascinating because there are so many mysteries to explore.
Scientists group living things into different categories. This helps them study and understand the amazing diversity of life on Earth. Scientists use a system called taxonomy to classify living things. This system has seven levels, starting with the largest group, the kingdom, and getting smaller until a unique species name is given. Read and Take Notes
Scientists have identified at least five kingdoms of living things: animals, plants, fungi, protists, and bacteria. Some scientists even believe there should be a sixth kingdom for viruses. Within each kingdom, there are smaller groups called phyla, classes, orders, families, genera, and species. Scientists use characteristics like appearance, reproduction, movement, and genes to classify living things into these groups. Read and Take Notes
All living things share certain characteristics. They grow, reproduce, move, respond to their environment, and need energy to survive. They also get rid of waste and take in nutrients. Scientists use these characteristics to determine if something is truly alive or not. Read and Take Notes
1. Monera (Bacteria): How they live: They are tiny and usually live alone as single cells. Characteristics: They don’t have a nucleus (the control center of a cell). Some can make their own food, while others need to get food from their surroundings. They can live in almost any environment, including extreme places like hot springs or inside your body! 2. Protista (Protists): How they live: Most live in water. They are usually single-celled, but they are more complex than bacteria. Characteristics: They have a nucleus, and some behave like plants (making their own food) while others behave like animals (eating other organisms). Think of them as a mix of both! 3. Fungi: How they live: Fungi love to live in dark, damp places, like under a rock or in soil. They grow by feeding off dead plants and animals. Characteristics: They cannot move around or make their own food. They absorb nutrients from things around them. Examples are mushrooms and molds. Read and Take Notes
4. Plantae (Plants): How they live: Plants live almost everywhere, from forests to deserts. They need sunlight to make their food. Characteristics: They have green parts called leaves where they make their own food through photosynthesis (using sunlight). They don’t move from place to place, but they grow! 5. Animalia (Animals): How they live: Animals live in many different places—on land, in water, or in the air. Characteristics: They cannot make their own food, so they need to eat other plants or animals. They can move around and have senses like sight, smell, and hearing to help them find food and stay safe. Read and Take Notes
