BASIC CONCEPTS IN COMPUTER SYSTEMS SERVICING

WHAT IS COMPUTER SYSTEMS SERVICING? Computer Systems Servicing is a skill that requires familiarization and knowledge of the different elements of a computer system, its hardware components, and its connectivity and functionality when connected to a network.

Work Order (Job Order) - is a task performed or a service rendered customer which is given by someone who has the knowledge and skills to accomplish the job.

Elements of a well-Planned Work Order People - This elements focuses on the strong technical skills of the people who will do the job and the number of workers who will be performing it. Tools and Equipement - The correct tools and equipment to be used and the spare parts, and their availability should be planned in advance before scheduling the task. Place - Consider the location where to purchase the parts needed and the place where work will be done to reduce travel time especially if it wull be field work. Time - Schedule and time frame should be carefully considered. Work Details - These could include the specification of the task that will be performed, the hazards and risks, and additional work instructions.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) - is a written document that states the sequential process of performing a specific task. It is created to guide and help an employee accomplish a task according to a company’s quality and safety standards. Work Order Form - contains specific instructions to be performed based on given requirements within a specified timeframe. It also contains the summary of labor and materials used to complete the job.

Inventory of Materials/Equipment forms - is a record about the items used in a business. It shows information such as an item’s serial number, description, quantity, unit, price per unit, and date of purchase. Inventory of materials form is used to be able to track all the materials or tolls that are on-hand and out of stock room.

Materials Requisition forms - contains the list of materials or parts requested. It shows the unit, description, price of the material, quantity of requested materials or parts, and their total price.

Materials Requisition forms - contains the list of tools and equipment to be borrowed, the description of the item, serial number, the purpose of borrowing, and the intended number of days the loaner wants to borrow the item. To make sure that the items are properly returned without damage, the portion of the form pertaining to the return of the items should be accomplished after inspection by the employee who received the items.

Procedures in Requesting and Receiving Tools and Materials Step 1: Carefully plan an down the tools and materials that will be requested. Step 2: Accomplish the form correctly. Step 3: Inspect the condition of the requested tools and materials. Check if they are functioning well. Step 4: Return tools and materials that are not functioning properly. Step 5: Handle tools and materials with care.

Cables A

Standard Materials Used in Computer Hardware Technology 1. USB Cable - stands for Universal Serial Bus cable. It is one of the most widely used cables in connecting computer and devices such as printer, digital camera, speakers, headset, mouse, keyboard, and graphics tablet. Since USB cable is a universal standard, it makes it easy to find and is usually affordable.

2. HDMI Cable - short for High Definition Multimedia Interface cable, is used to transfer high definition audio and video from different devices. Most modern televisions, computer monitors, and projectors today are HDMI ready.

3. DVI Cable - which stands for Digital Visual Interface, was created to be the standard in transmitting digital video content to different devices. DVI Cables are more common in computer monitors and projectors .

4. Ethernet Cable - is one of the most common cables used to connect computer networks. Ethernet cable connects different devices, such as desktop computers and routers, to a local area network (LAN).

5. IDE Cable - which stands for Integrated Drive Electronics cable, is a type of cable used to connect a hard drive and other storage devices to the mainboard of the computer.

6. VGA Cable - which means Video Graphics Array cable, is used to connect the system unit of a computer to a monitor, laptop screen, or projector.

7. SATA Cable - which stands for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment cable, is also used to connect hard drives like an IDE cable. However, most computers use SATA cables, which are faster than an IDE cable in terms of data transmitting speed.

8. eSATA Cable - short for External Serial Advanced Technology cable, is used to connect external devices such as external hard drives and is usually combined with a USB connector .

Components B

1. Resistor - is an electronic component that restricts the flow of electric current in an electronic circuit. Resistors are often seen in a computer's mainboard or motherboard.

2. Capacitor - is an electronic component that stores an electric charge and releases it when there is a need to. Capacitors also have a role in voltage regulation and smoothing isolated signals. It works like a battery that charges and discharges rapidly. Capacitors are used in common power supplies and motherboard.

3. Integrated Circuit (IC) – is a small semiconductor based electronic device consisting of several resistors and capacitors. It is the basic component of most electronic devices. An IC is also known as chip or microchip and the most common example is a computer's processor.

4. Transistor - is a tiny electronic switch and amplifier. It acts as a switch in a circuit which can be triggered by electric signals.

5. Diode - is an electronic component which conducts electric current in one direction. It is usually made up of silicone material. Diodes are commonly used in devices such as voltage regulators, signal rectifiers, and oscillators. They are also used to be able to charge the batteries of laptops and other mobile devices.

Every components has a specifications that gives information to the user on when and where it could be used.

Meeting and following standards are essential for the overall quality of work.
