SPECIES IN CLASS CESTODES
TERM USED IN CESTODES SCOLEX anterior organ or head of tapeworm ROSTELLUM Bulging part of scolex . PROGLOTTID Single segment of a tapeworm. HEXACANTH Larval stage of tapeworm having six hooks. CYSTICERCUS Larval form of tapeworm having fluid filled bladder .
Taenia saginata Taenia saginata is also called as BEEF TAPEWORM. MORPHOLOGY of adult tapeworm: Shape-------- TAPE LIKE. Size ---3-4 meters. Color --------------WHITISH. Head appearance: Quadrate with 4 SUCKERS present on head. Note :in taenia saginata no hooks or rostellum .
Taenia saginata scolex
Morphology of taenia saginata Proglottids Their proglottids number varies from 1000 to 2000 and when seen under microscope have 18-30 segments. MORPHOLOGY OF EGG: COLOR--------BROWN. SHAPE------ SPHERICAL. EGG SHELL IT is OUTERMOST layer which is thin and rupture easily inside intestine. EMBRYOPHORE I nner layer surrounding embryo and is BROWN in color. ONCHOSPHERE a hexacanth embryo having 3 pairs of hooklets .

Life cycle of T aenia S aginata Beef tapeworm has TWO hosts in its life cycle. INTERMEDIATE HOST : tapeworm eggs hatches into its LARVAL form in INTERMEDIATE HOST and in case of T.saginatum it is CATTLE (cows and buffaloes). DEFINITIVE HOST: saginatum larva harbors into its ADULT and leads to production of eggs. Definitive host is MAN for t.saginatum .
Stages of life cycle IN CATTLES(intermediate host) INGESTION OF EGGS: Cattles are infected by grazing in pasture land contaminated by human faeces containing eggs of T .sagintum . LARVAL FORMATION in GIT . Imbedding of larvae/ cysterci in flesh.
LIFE CYCLE IN MAN(definitive host) Ingestion of infected cattle: man are infected by eating meat infected by larva of t.saginatum . Attachment and maturation of larva into adults and passage of proglottids or eggs.
Diagnosis STOOL EXAMINATION: Following observation would suggest t.saginatum presence. Proglottid observed Having 18-30 branches Egg seen Brown with 3 pairs of hooklets Adult worm head Quadrate having 4 suckers but no hooks
Diagnosis Blood examination eosinophilia in some cases. DISEASES CAUSED: TAENIASIS. Patient have indigestion, diarrhea, vomiting anemia. Treatment is PRAZIQUANTEL an antihelminthic drug.
TAENIA SOLIUM It is also called as taenia solium . MORPHOLOGY OF ADULT PORK TAPEWORM: HEAD------GLOBULAR in shape with 4 suckers along with 28 small hoklets present. Rostellum present. Proglottid have 8-12 lateral segments.
Morphology of egg Similar to taenia saginatum and cant be differentiated.
Life cycle of taenia solium (pork tapeworm) It has also two hosts in life cycle. Intermediate host : Intermediate host of taenia solium is PIG . DEFINITIVE HOST: humans are definitive host in taenia solium’s life cycle.
IN PIGS(intermediate host) Ingestion of eggs Development of egg into larvae in intermediate host and immigration of larvae to muscles of host IN MAN(definitive host) Eating uncooked pork infected by larva of t.solium Maturation to adult tapeworm.
DIAGNOSIS STOOL EXAMINATION Presence of gravid proglotids 8-12 lateral branches Head of t.solium 4 suckers along with hooklets EGGS appearance Brwon egg with onchosphere having 3 hoooklets .
Diseases caused by taenia solium . TAENIASIS.- it causes GIT complaints e.g indigestion, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and anemia. Treatment praziquantel CYSTICERCOSIS: Person having adult pork tapeworm autoinfect himself and acquire larvae causing cystercosis . They settle in eyes causing uveitis , Brain causing space occuping lesion. When they die it calcify and can cause mental problems and epilepsy. TREATMENT :Surgical removal, albendazole or praziquantel .
