TAMBACOUNDA HOSPITAL TAMBACOUNDA,SENEGAL
Architects: Manuel Herz Architects Area: 3000 m² Year: 2021 City: Tambacounda Country: Senegal
PRIMARY SECONDARY TERTIARY
CONCEPT The architect wanted to design a series of new treatment rooms that draws an S-shaped extension to senegalese hospital with a snaking building circulation echoing the rounded shapes of the existing hospital buildings. FORM It is a passive climate design innovation to combat the challenges of hot local weather, the building is characterized by, a feature which allows for all the rooms to be aired and cooled naturally through cross ventilation. The use of lattice like brickwork helps block the sun and facilitating air circulation. MASS The two-storey structure add some 23,000sq.f and 150 beds to the regions only hospital.
CLIMATIC STRATEGIES
Materials Used: • Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB): Made from local laterite soil mixed with a small amount of cement (5-10%). These blocks are durable and environmentally friendly. Structural Design: • Curved Walls: The serpentine design provides natural ventilation corridors, reduces heat gain, and enhances structural stability. • Roof Design: Large overhangs for shade and rainwater harvesting.
Sustainability : Helps block the sun and facilitating air circulation. • Use of locally sourced materials to minimize the environmental footprint. • Large overhangs and shaded areas help to protect the interior from direct sunlight, keeping the indoor spaces cooler. • The project involved the local community in the construction process. The curvilinear layout creates a building which ensures that almost no trees are cut for it’s construction.

LAYOUT There are four typologies of services : medical areas, medical support, non-medical areas and service spaces. The Labour Room has an high occupancy rate (up to 6 people) as compared to its limited surface of only 12 m (with around 2 m' per person) On the contrary, the floor area of the offices is quite wide (about 200 m).
