Questions:
Part A:
•Linnaeus did not go to college to
become a taxonomist. What was he
actually studying?
•How did this lead him to his work in
classification and taxonomy?
•Although Linnaeus gets credit for laying
the foundation for taxonomy and
classification, he could not have been
successful without the help of his students
and peers. How does this demonstrate the
nature of scientific discovery?
•What was the title of Linnaeus
book on classification?
• L i n n a e u s f o c u s e d o n t h e
c l a s s i fi c a t i o n o f p l a n t s . W h a t
characteristic(s) did Linnaeus use to
classify plants?
•How does the compare to the
characteristics that are used today?
• C o m p a re a n d c o n t r a s t t h e
classification system used by Linnaeus to
the classification system that we use now.
•Describe at least two problems that
resulted from the naming system used
prior to Linnaeus.
•What do we mean by the term
binomial nomenclature?
•Name at least one way this is used
outside of the field of taxonomy.
•Linnaeus work was published
before Darwin developed his theory of
natural selection. How do you think
Linnaeus may have contributed to
Darwin’s idea that species change over
time due to pressure within their
environment? Explain.

Linnaeus did not go to
college to become a
taxonomist, but was
studying?
Linnaeus was actually going to
college to become a doctor. This is were
he started to collect plants, which he
enjoyed very much.
How did this lead him to
his work in classification?
A doctor at this time used
plants as medicine. This lead
Linnaeus to go on several
expeditions to collect species of
plants. Linnaeus used this
experience to form his own
classification system
Linnaeus gets the help of his
students and peers. How does this

scientific discovery? It takes several

discovery to learn. Scientific study
is collaboration.
What was the title of
L i n n a e u s b o o k o n
classification? Linnaeus’ book
was called Systema Naturae.
