A Deep Look At Elisa Allen in Steinbeck s The Chrysanthemums
The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck is not just a simple short story. Yes it is a short story
about a country housewife that lives a boring life and grows beautiful flowers. She is then
mislead to believe that a perfect stranger has interest in her flowers and is moved to reveal to
him her secrets in growing them and even give him not only some of her prized shoots from the
flowers but also some work so that he is given what he originally wanted. She then finds her
shoots thrown haphazardly on the side of the road. She begins to ask for wine and becomes very
saddened and begins to weep. On the surface it seems like a very superficial story about how a
womancould be deceived by a man into believing that he has interest in what she can... Show more

She grows the Chrysanthemums as an expression of her femininity and womanhood. As the
Chrysanthemums express her feminine side when her husband inhibits her, she must care for
them as if they we her. The existence of the flowers mirrors her own. If Elisa were to let them
die, either by her own hand, or through neglect of others, she herself would experience death a
death of what she needs, but cannot have in any other way and maintain her marriage. This
would create a collapse of her sense of self, and make her into an empty shell of a woman.
(Berry) The Chrysanthemums represent her true inner essence and when she discovers that they
man looking to fix her pots left her precious Chrysanthemum shoots on the side of the road, she
feels a sense of neglect that is very powerful. She then decides that wine will help her feel some
sort of contentment but in that moment she moves from a powerful fertile woman into a bitter old
woman through the power of simple neglect. Elisa s fulfillment came through her flowers, once
they were abandoned on the side of the road Elisa felt herself to be trivial and unappreciated and
finally came to terms with the way the world viewed her. After the man who admires her
Chrysanthemums leaves her Elisa begins to ready herself for a night on the town with her husband
Henry. He witnesses her transformation and although he may be appreciating her beauty he

The Energy Source Of Energy
In an era where fossil fuels are the dominant source of energy, environmentalists and scientists
are looking for alternative energy sources in the fear that fossil fuels will sooner or later become
consumed by our energy needs. In the hunt to find a strong alternative energy source, scientists
have reverted back to an old formula E=MC2. The indicated formula was first thought up by
Albert Einstein to describe a part of general relativity in the paper Does the Inertia of a Body
Depend Upon Its Energy Content? Furthermore, in his publication Albert Einstein explains that
mass and kinetic energy are proportionally equal. Meaning you can transfer energy into mass and
vice versa. In addition if you are able to transfer mass into energy that mass will be multiplied by
the speed of light (C) squared, meaning that a little mass can turn into a lot of energy. Moreover,
Einstein s reasoning for using the speed of light is because atoms when separated travel the
speed of light thus carrying a lot of energy. At the time Einstein was working on trying to find
ways to separate and or fuse atoms in order to gain energy and put his formula to use. However,
today we have found two different ways of doing so in what we call nuclear fusionand nuclear
fission.
Nuclear fusion has been around since the big bang, as it is the process that powers stars just like
ours and is how our universe continues to grow. Moreover, nuclear fusion occurs when two or more
atoms fuse together at very high

Odysseus Influence On Homer s Odyssey
Think you re escaping and run into yourself. Longest way round is the shortest way home
(James Joyce). A profound summary of the themes in Joyce s Ulysses, the quote above deals
with journey, escapism, identity, and nostalgia; all important parts of everyday life. Ulysses,
however, was far from the first literary work to deal with themes such as those. Indeed, the works
of Joyce, as well as Dante, Milton, and Virgil can be directly traced to the works of Homer,
specifically the Odyssey. One of the most translated, discussed, and taught literary works of all
time, the influence of Homer s Odyssey cannot be understated. Although Odysseuss journey is
magnificent and supernatural, the epic discusses the deeply personal struggles of one man, swept
up in forces beyond his control, as well as telling one of the first, if not the very first, coming of age
stories. The account of Odysseus and Telemachus deeply influenced not only western literature, but
also music and media. In addition, the Odyssey contains numerous insights into the culture of the
ancient Greeks, the originators of Western Culture as a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The story of Telemachus growing from a boy to a man and of Odysseus finding his way in a
cruel, absurd world will remain timeless because of its relatability, especially for college aged
people. The word odyssey has been adapted into the English language to mean a great journey. In
a way, every person on this earth experiences their own odyssey through life. To feel tossed about
by life s randomness and seeming cruelty while just trying to get by is part of the human condition.
By taking that feeling and making it fit a story containing gods, monsters, love, and war, Homer
created a work that not only influenced nearly all literature after, but a work that continues to be

Lost Boys Sociology
The situation of the Lost Boys could be explained using the 3 major theories in sociology. The
first theory is functionalism. Humans naturally focus on the negative over the positive but
functionalism is typically a theory that looks at things more positively. However, this is
obviously not a positive result, but it does come from a similarly positive, and somewhat idealist
point of view. The Lost Boys are an unintended result of Sudanese People s Liberation
Movement. The civil war could be a result of people feeling that others are stepping out of their
roles, and thus have to reestablish what those roles should be and whom should fill them.
Unfortunately the chaos can lead to even greater confusion and certainly risk destroying a lot. This
indirectly lead to these Lost Boys having to find new roles that suited them better. Even before
moving to America, they managed to create those roles amongst themselves. They created a
simpler form of hierarchy and social stratification. They also all played into one common role of
trying to push the group forward in finding a new culture so that they could create the roles that
could truly fit them.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have not researched too thoroughly into the civil war itself, but I m sure there are many
relations for the theory there. The Lost Boys are more of a results of the theory, as opposed to an
example of it. These boys did not want to face the conflict. They did not follow the idea that the
people will get together and inevitably take control over the government when the balances have
been broken. Rather, they did left to find their own source of unity without so much conflict. They
have seen the loses of the fight and they did not want to continue enduring

Essay On Periodic Swarms
Periodic spatiotemporal swarms mining periodic swarms, even though there are some redundant
periodic swarms. To solve this problem we use parsimonious periodic swarm mining method which
is more efficient and effective. In the Figure ef{example6}(a), we see that periodic swarms
$(\left\{o_1, o_2ight\}, \left\{T_1, T_3ight\}, L_1)$ and $(\left\{o_1, o_2ight\}, \left\{T_2,
T_3ight\}, L_1)$ are subsumed by the periodic swarms $(\left\{o_1, o_2ight\}, \left\{T_1, T_2,
T_3ight\}, L_1)$. Thus, we reduce redundant periodic swarms and find significant parsimonious
periodic swarms in the Figure ef{example6}(b). egin{figure}[htp] \centering
\includegraphics[width = .9 extwidth]{figure/p2pp.eps}... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the closed swarms are not greater than the number of long time spatiotemporal swarms.
Furthermore, mining parsimonious periodic swarms we use periodic swarms according to the
definitions ef{ps} and ef{parsimonious}. Parsimonious periodic swarms subsumed periodic
swarms. If any swarms are not subsumed by other swarms, then the number of parsimonious
periodic swarms equal to the number of periodic swarms, i.e., $|PPS|^{swarms}\leq
|PS|^{swarms}$. Contrariwise, if some periodic swarms subsumed by other periodic swarms, then
the number of parsimonious periodic swarms is less than the number of periodic swarms that
cause $|PPS|^{swarms} |PS|^{swarms}$. egin{myex} Suppose, $min_{object}$ = 2,
$min_{time}$ = 2, then the Figure ef{example1}(d) and Figure ef{example1}(f) shows the
number of long time spatiotemporal swarms is 16. After mining closed swarms from long time
spatiotemporal swarms in Figure ef{example3}(b) depicts the number is 11 that is less than 16.
Then, we mine 13 periodic swarms in the Figure ef{example4}(b) that is less than 16 long time
swarms. Finally, in the Figure ef{example6}(b) we find 11 parsimonious swarms from the
periodic swarms. Even though the number of closed swarms and parsimonious periodic swarms are

My Wish By Rascal Flatts And I Hope You Dance
Success and happiness is something everyone should want in their life. I m sure most people are
familiar with the songs My wish by Rascal Flatts and I hope you dance by Lee Ann Womack.
Both of these songs are saying to give confidence and never give up on the the things you love. I
Hope You Dance and My Wish are very alike in a sense that they are both about going somewhere
in life and being happy, but there are a few differences that are hard to recognize.
My Wish is a song recorded by Rascal Flatts, written by Jeffery Steele and Steve Robson. The
song was written for one of Steele s four daughters. What I m getting out of this song, and what I
believe many others do too is to live every minute like it s your last. I hope the days come easy
and the moments pass slow the very first line is about someone who s going somewhere in life.
And each road leads you where you want to go, (line 2) This is saying that hopefully the path
you re taking in life is the one you want to fulfill. And if you re faced with a choice and you have
to choose, I hope you choose the one that means the most to you (line 3 4) What Steele is saying
that if one has to make a choice, it should be the best choice for that person, not what someone else
wants you to do.
Your dreams stay big and your worries stay small (line 1, verse 2) Steele is saying to keep your
goals in mind, work towards them and don t let your worries get in the way. The next line You

The Theory Of Economy And The Validity Of Emh
To the extent to which you depart from that equality, if it is in your opponents favor, you are a fool,
and if in your own, you are unjust. Although the notion of market efficiency has albeit
rudimentarily been dealt with since the 16th century , it was only when Eugene Fama published his
PhD and his subsequent article Efficient Capital Markets: A Review of Theory and Empirical Work
in 1970 that the Efficient Market Hypothesis (hereafter EMH) was established. The fundamental
argument offered by EMH proposes that the multiplicity and interaction of fully rational economic
actors within a market will lead to the elimination of disparities between market prices and actual
values and allow the former to randomly fluctuate around the... Show more content on

Being that news and exogenous shocks are by nature erratic, prices will share their randomness.
Accordingly, as stipulated by the rational expectations model, investors will act in response to
financial shocks mindful of the latters macroeconomic consequences. Furthermore, both efficiency
and rationality have relative connotations within the economy and are contingent to different levels
of market friction. Campbell, Lo, and MacKinley echo this view and argue that the concept of
relativity is a more useful approach than the absolutist interpretations seen in traditional economic
literature. Markets can, thus, still be efficient even if certain economic agents are irrational or if
price volatility of assets cannot be grounded by fundamentals. Since certain market participants are
irrational, specific stock market trades will not be based on a rational evaluation. Yet, Fama s
sophisticated trader argument finds that the impact of the rational agents within the market is
powerful enough to minimize the departure of actual prices from their fundamental value. Fama
expanded EMH into three distinct forms weak, semi strong and strong form to allow the
hypothesis to be tested in financial analyses. The form that is perceived, however, as the most
reflective of EMH and will be employed by the paper is the semi strong. This form of market
efficiency

Media Reaction to Immigration
Media Reaction to Immigration Name Course Date Submitted Media Reaction to Immigration:
The issue of illegal immigration is one of the hotly debated topics in almost every facet of
society, especially among political leaders. This topic has also received huge media attention and
reaction in the recent past including an article written by William Finnegan and published by The
New Yorker. The article focuses on addressing the issue of borderlines and is based on the move
by 17 Congress members, who wrote a letter on 28th April 2010 demanding an instant action from
President Obama to enhance border security. While the increase in illegal immigration has declined
in the recent past, there is still a great need to enhance border security, particularly in the as
violence in the neighborhood of U.S. Mexico has continued to escalate at an alarming rate.
Therefore, evaluating the need to improve border security to lessening illegal immigration is vital
for enhancing the country s security and understanding its impacts on America s economy and labor
force. Historical Framework of Illegal Immigration: Illegal immigration has continued to be a major
problem in America, particularly in the latter periods of the 20th Century. Notably, the origin of this
huge problem can be traced back to the late 19th Century that prompted the enactment of a federal
legislation that forbade the entry of prostitutes and convicts in 1875. Prior to the enactment of this
law and subsequent

All Quiet On The Western Front And Dulce Et Decorum
The topic of war is hard to imagine from the perspective of one who hasn t experienced it.
Literature makes it accessible for the reader to explore the themes of war. Owen and Remarque
both dipcik what war was like for one who has never gone through it. Men in both All Quiet on the
Western Front and Dulce Et Decorum experience betrayal of youth, horrors of warand feelings of
camaraderie.
While the young men at the ages of eighteen to twenty signed up for the war they believed that
they were going to have a well off time, meanwhile the older generation is betraying them. The
men that came before them do not tell them they are going to see there best friend shot to pieces.

Most soldiers have that epiphany when they know that they are okay because they have these
men around them that are there to help and support them. These men that make it out with or
without the men they came with leave with an understanding of the camaraderie that they did
not have starting out. Paul has just killed a man and as a realization, Camard I did not want to
kill you... but you were only an idea to me before an abstraction... now for the first time, I see
you are a man like me (Remarque 223 ). He has gone through so much fighting this war and then
to kill this man he finds that they are equal, they are just fighting for the same reasons. There
was no real enemy just an idea of one. These men have just been gassed and are under attack Gas!
Gas! Quick, boys! An ecstasy of fumbling, fitting the clumsy helmets just in time (Owen 9 10).

togetherness they are going to lose the men that they desperately need. The camaraderie kicks in

U.s. Maritime Strategic Operations
Introduction For over 60 years the Forward Deployed Naval Forces (FDNF) in Japan has served
as a cornerstone for executing U.S. Maritime Strategies in Asia. From the strategies of Deterrence,
Power Projection, and Crisis Response, to the strategies of Littoral Operations and
Engagement, the FDNF has been a key contributor to these missions.
Several commands in the United States Navy operate in overseas outside of Continental United
States (CONUS). These are the different platforms of naval ships such as: Destroyers (DDG),
Mine Counter Measure (MCM), Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD), landing Platform Dock (LPD),
Dock Landing Ship (LSD), Military Sealift Command (MSC), Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile
Unit, Undersea Surveillance Detachment, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was accomplished during a single day during underway in FDNF operation. All of this was
done on time, professionally and most importantly safely without a single personnel or equipment

FDNF Operational Requirements
The U.S. 7th Fleet is the largest U.S. numbered fleet (Figure 1), with 60 70 ships, 200 300
aircraft and about 40,000 Sailors and Marines operating in the region on a typical day (Carr,
2013). There are more than 48 million square miles (more than 124 million square kilometers) in
the 7th Fleet s Area of Responsibility (AOR). It covers the Kuril Islands in the north to the
Antarctic in the south, and from the International Date Line to the 68th meridian east, which runs
down from the India Pakistan border. It has 36 maritime countries and the world s five largest
foreign armed forces in the 7th AOR (i.e., Russia, India, North Korea, People s Republic of
China, and Republic of Korea). Five of the seven U.S. Mutual Defense Treaties are with countries
in the area of Republic of the Philippines, Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and
Thailand (C7F, 2015).
The FDNF offers two independent striking forces; the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) battle group

The Mentally Ill O FF Ender Treatment And Crime Reduction...
The Mentally Ill Oп¬ Ђender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act of 2004: Problems and
Prospects by Christine M. Litschgea and Michael G. Vaughn, is a research article whose focus is
three fold. First, the researchers reviewed the literature available on the components that have
influenced the considerable increases of incarcerated persons with severe mental illness (SMI).
Secondly, they analyzed the Mentally Ill Oп¬ Ђender Treatment and CrimeReduction Act of 2004
(MIOTCRA), and evaluated if, since its inception, has reduced the problems associated with
incarcerated persons with SMI. Thirdly, they offered recommendations about policy improvements;
how to decrease the number of SMI persons imprisoned.

Lastly, they propose recommendations, these are based on the outcome of their reviews and
analyses, which include: effecting and requiring enforcement of policies already in existence,
decreasing the number of individuals with untreated SMI by changing outpatient commitment

reducing the overall number of SMI individuals becoming involved in the criminal justice system
at all. They also recognized the need for evidence based programs, and additional research to
investigate the actual effectiveness of MHC s and public mental health services.
Analysis and Evaluation
The issue chosen by the researchers, is a relevant issue facing the criminal justice system. The
predominance of mental health problems among incarcerated persons in both prisons and jails
present major problems for each component of the criminal justice system; law enforcement, courts,
and corrections. The entire criminal justice system is negatively impacted and overburdened by
untreated mental illness. According to Bureau of Justice Statistics, more than half of all prison and
jail inmates have a mental health problem (James Glaze, 2006).

Age Of Enlightenment
During the 18th century, a worldwide movement, more commonly recognized as the Age of
Enlightenment, encouraged the spread of philosophical thinking, science, communications, and
politics. This movement gradually branched out from Northern Europe and reached places such as
the United States of America and France, encouraging the American and French Revolutions. The
Enlightenment brought about a new age of philosophical and intellectual thinkers, such as John

America s Declaration of Independence.) Natural rights became the staple of Locke s political
philosophy. Locke believed that an individual was born with the right and duty to their own life,
including their property. His idea based off of natural rights has become what he is most
commonly recognized for in politics. Much like Locke s belief in natural rights, he also believed
in the social contract theory. The social contract theory is the agreement among people in a society
to cooperate in order to receive social benefits. The government could only be a legitimate
government with the consent of the people that it governs, along with their agreement to obey its
laws (Thompson, Bruce E.R. social contract theory. ) If the citizens obey the rules of its
government, then the government should protect their natural rights such as their freedom of
speech, equality, and property. Locke s social contract theory became one of the ideas that capital
punishment was founded off of, however, he was not the only enlightened thinker to have this
theory. Both John Locke and Thomas Hobbes believed in the social contract theory, but they had
conflicting ideas. Hobbes believed in an absolute monarchy, a form of government in which Locke
was greatly opposed to, and that the people must obey the law, but trying to overthrow their king
would be a violation of the contract. In contrast to Locke, who believed that the citizens have the
right to rebel against its government if they

Classic liberalism is a political ideology that advocates limited government constitutionalism, rule of
law, due process, individual liberties including freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and
free markets. The Age of Enlightenment was a cultural movement of intellectuals in Europe and the
United States, whose purpose was to reform society and advance knowledge. It promoted science

European states ended the Thirty Years War with the Peace of Westphalia (1648), which laid the
foundations for a system of independent, competing states. They also mutually recognized their
rights to organize their domestic and religious affairs and agreed that political and diplomatic
affairs were to be conducted by states acting in their own interests.

The secret of youth has been looking for a long time. Many researchers have been experimenting to
find ways to slow down the aging process.
There are techniques that have been applied, but to do the most important things is a consistent
implementation of healthy lifestyle and eating habits.
We can not stop natural change, but we can always look younger, if we work hard to stop the aging
process.
That s why I m 10 simple steps to help you look younger:
Detox it is important to start detoxification, toxins from our body. Our body metabolism has done
that process, but every day, we are exposed to many chemical hazards from air, food and
environment in life. Fasting or just consuming fruits and vegetables are ways to detoxify our bodies.

The Controversy Over Voter Identification Laws Essay
In 2002, with the intention of updating election technology, hampering voter fraud, and increasing
faith in the electoral system, President George W. Bush signed into law the Help America Vote Act
(Gerken 14). Since the implementation of this act, controversial voter identification laws have
begun springing up all over the country. According to the National Conference of State
Legislatures, thirty one states require all voters to show ID before votingat the polls. In fifteen of
these, the ID must include a photo of the voter; in the remaining sixteen, non photo forms of ID are
acceptable (Voter Identification Requirements). In 2005 Indiana lawmakers passed one of the
strictest voter identification laws in the country requiring voters... Show more content on

Republican proponents claim that voter identification laws do not discourage those who are
most likely to vote from turning out to the polls. They also believe voter identification laws are
vitally essential to discourage voter fraud and to strengthen public trust in the electoral system
(Gerken 40). Looking closer at both sides of this continuing controversy will help to clarify each
sides claims and reveal any misinformation. Democrats, who almost unanimously oppose voter
identification laws, strongly feel that minority groups of voters, who tend to vote Democratic,
are more likely to not have the resources, knowledge, or means to have or obtain the necessary
identification requirements for the polls. In a research project developed by Matt A. Barreto,
Stephen A. NuГ±o, and Gabriel R. Sanchez, testing was conducted to determine the rates of
access to valid photo identification among voters and non voters in Indiana, with an eye towards
specific demographic groups, such as the elderly and racial minorities (Barreto, NuГ±o, and
Sanchez 112). Indiana was selected because of its strict voter identification law and for the ability
to closely assess specific segments of the electorate under such a law. Their research method, using
a random telephone survey of 1,000 registered and 500 non registered voters, was conducted in a
way that was unbiased and provided the most reliable and accurate results possible (Barreto,

Dead Poets Society Reflection
The Dead Poets Society is a tale about a small secrete club established in an all male preparatory
school. In the beginning of the movie the school s newest English teacher arrives, Mr. Keating, a
former student at the school. The students discover his teaching methods are rather untraditional
as he would have his students tear pages out of the textbook to march around the courtyard. One
of the main lessons of Mr. Keating s lecture was the aspect of carpe diem or seize the day. In the
beginning of the movie, several boys find Mr. Keating s yearbook and discover that he was in
The Dead Poets Society. This club was reintroduced by several boys: Neil Perry, Todd Anderson,
Charlie Dalton, Knox Overstreet, Steven Meeks, Richard Cameron, and Gerard Pitts. Once the
Dead Poets Society is established each boy starts on their own ambitious adventure regarding
love or their dreams. When each boy is tested with one of their adventures they think of Mr.
Keating s words, carpe diem, and they peruse their challenge. In the story Todd Anderson
struggles with his shyness and the idea that his thoughts are meaningless. While others such as
Knox Overstreet fall in love with a girl who he should never peruse. Neil Perry, disobeys his
father and tries to peruse his dream of becoming an actor however, when Neil s father condemns
the idea of Neil performing in the play. At the end of the movie, the boys achieve their ambitions.

Essay On Greek Geometry
The Greek are one of the founders of geometry, and had a big impact on math and the world
today. Greek geometry eventually passed into the hands of the great Islamic scholars, who
translated it and added to it. All around us we can observe some geometrical principles, which is
probably what started the ancients on their way to developing this field of study. The word geometry
has its roots in the Greek work geometrein, which means earth measuring . There were many
circumstances in which primitive people were forced to take on geometric topics, man had to learn
with situations involving distance, bounding their land, and constructing walls and homes. For
sure builders today have to use geometry. In this study of Greek geometry, there were many more
Greek mathematicians and geometers who contributed to the history of geometry. Geometry is one
of the most greatest things mankind has ever thought of. Because of Greeks geometry has become
a big part of our lives as well. Some people might have jobs that include a lot geometry. People
everyday use geometry without even realizing. There were... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For engineers, having knowledge of geometry is very important for properly sizing and
structuring physical objects. Engineers use geometry to identify key shapes, such as triangles,
cubes and pyramids, and to find quantities like lengths, volumes, centroids, and movements of
inertia, lines and curves. Geometry is also used to reduce friction and determine the structure of
soil. For builders they have to learn how to measure their objects, and use shapes to build their
buildings. Geometry is used in astronomy to find the properties of stars and other objects in
space. Also they need it to find how many years does it take to get from one place to another and
the distance between two or more objects. They need to use equation formulas for basically

Huygens Accomplishments
While he was not observing the stars, one problem that plagued Huygens throughout his life was
that of time. In 1658, he was the first to build a pendulum clock the first great step towards modern
timekeeping (Magill et. al.). He published the schematics and his speculations about future
improvements in his Horologium in 1658. While this solved the problem of keeping time, one of the
most important applications of this technology continually evaded him. In order to reliably
determine ones latitude while at sea, some form of accurate timekeeping is needed. As a citizen of
the Dutch Republic, whose economy was heavily dependent on shipping via the sea, Huygens was
especially desperate to solve this problem. However, when he sought to apply... Show more content

Huygens was one of the first scientists to recognize that the speed of light must necessarily be a
finite quantity, and from this he was able to determine a kinematic theory of light. The theory
details spherical waves which emanate at the speed of light (which Huygens did not explicitly
define other than saying that it was a finite quantity) in uniform wave fronts. Huygens spherical
light waves propagated in a longitudinal fashion, and thus must necessarily have a medium
through which to propagate. Huygens envisioned this ether was composed of tiny, closely spaced,
elastic particles, which vibrate and pass on the waves of light (Charles). However, not all of
Huygens contemporaries agreed with his formulation of the wave nature of light. Isaac Newton, in
particular, was a vocal opponent of his theory in favor of his own corpuscular theory of light.
Huygens, as stated in his Ebscohost Biography: ...regarded the transmission of such particles
through empty space to be mere Newtonian action at a distance again and incompatible with a
mechanistic view of nature . However, Newton s prominence at the time meant that Huygens s
theory of light remained relatively unknown until mid 19th century, when it was rediscovered and
eventually reformulated into what we now know as the Maxwell

This article describes the interaction of a laser pulse train on napthalocyanine and phthalocyanine

parameters. The main conclusion of the work is that the single sub pulse duration is the most
important parameter that affects the optical limiting process. The topic of the manuscript, may be
of interest to the audience of the Journal of Computational and Theoretical Chemistry. However,
the computational methodology is not clear and the outcome should be classified as routine work,

Following this strategy, it is possible to ignore the populations of the S1, Sn and T2 levels and
convert the temporal equations in a set of discrete equations considering just the sub pulses center,
consequently avoiding the explicit integration in time. This point should be clarified in detail.
5) It is not so clear for me why authors have included the assumption GammaSn^ 1=GammaT2^

6) Lines 95 103 and Figure 3: Authors do not observe any change by changing delta and n. It is

9) Figure 4, panel a, lines 104 112 and conclusions lines 126 127: The effect of increasing the sub

That is not truth as it is shown in Figure 4. The better one is tau=140ps, and in general larger sub
pulse duration will show better OL behavior. Indeed, as longer the sub pulse is, triplet state is more

Capitalism And Neoliberalism
Throughout history, the concept of politics has reduced through many centuries. Since the
beginning of time the implementation of governance has been a recurring question. Globally, there
are different ideologies and political systems that our citizens must follow. One major concept from
the the ideology Neoliberalism is Globalization which impacts our society in ways that many do not
see. Another ideology that affects our society is the concept of Capitalism. All aspects of Politics
affects the role and nature of the state as we know it today. Neoliberalism is an ideology that
express a means for a free market economy. A free market economy is an economy that those
who have access to, can take part in. As stated before, Globalization is a subheading of
Neoliberalism. The concept of globalization is to unify the globe into one, so that society can
run smoother. Globalization, comes with the concept of a global village. The three components
of this village are an open market, society, and technology. An open market is the free movement
of goods and services. This feature of the village allows for new ideas and creations to be
introduced to our society. An open society is the collapsing of national boundaries with the free
movement of people. The free movement of people brings on new nationalities and languages
which makes us very diverse. Lastly, open technology is that anyone can use the free market. This
concept of the village gives those who can, access to the free

1920s Dance In The 1920s
1920s Dance Styles
During the 1920s, dancing was one of the main forms of entertainment. There were lots of new
dances introduced during this time. It became the newest craze of the 1920s. People would dance
anywhere they could, but mainly in their homes, clubs, parties, and during competitions. These new
dances captivated the nation, because they were easy to learn, promoted new types of clothing, and
assisted in the advancement of entertainment. One thing that contributed to the popularity of
dancing in the 1920s is how universally simple they made the dances. If these dances would have
been harder to learn, not as many people would have been doing them. Many people know that,
during the Jazz Age, almost everyone danced so they did a dance almost anyone could do
(Nelson). When Billie Putman was growing up, there were dances every weekend at the big
auditorium in the middle of town. Everyone in her small town would show up to dance. She
remembered going to the dances with her mom to help her serve refreshments downstairs, while
most of the town was upstairs dancing. If dancing was so popular in such a small town in Idaho, it

Cough In The Commonplace
Almost every commonplace scenario has a polite phrase that goes alongside it. When someone
sneezes, a scattered symphony of bless you s follows soon afterward. When you receive a gift of
kindness, it is appropriate to respond with a thank you . When accepting another s gratitude, it is
typical to say, You re welcome . But what do you say when someone coughs? By normal people s
standards, the answer to that question is nothing at all. After a person coughs, not a single word is
uttered, leaving an empty silence which desires to be filled with something. A while back in
middle school, it was this palpable feeling of emptiness which drove me to ponder the nature of
this situation. How could there be no phrase to respond to a cough? I

Similarities Between Justin Trudeau And Angela Merkel
Justin Trudeau and Angela Merkel are confusing politicians because while both are considered
radical, they often ignore political parties norms and do what is best for their country, continent and

taxes on the wealthy, improving international relationships, and boosting federal spending to pull
Canadaout of an economic recession. While in Germany, Angela Merkel has reigned as German
Chancellor for over a decade, and while she has modified her political promises, her goals remain

agreements support the idea of free trade across borders and overall globalization. Trudeau also

The Constitutional Basis Of Personal Jurisdiction
Jurisdiction Personal jurisdiction refers to the ability of a court to exercise its power over a
particular defendant or item of property. Personal jurisdiction may be categorized as in personam,
in rem, or quasi in rem. The primary restraints on a court s power to exercise personal jurisdiction
are found in the United StatesConstitution, state statutes, and case law. The Constitutional basis for
personal jurisdictioncomes from the due process clause of the 14th Amendment. The statutory basis
comes from most states adopting what is called a long arm statute that states the limits of personal
jurisdictionthat a state has over the defendant. Most long arm statutes, including CA, state that their
personal jurisdiction may be exercised up to the limits of the constitution. There are two types of
personal jurisdiction: specific jurisdiction and general jurisdiction. A court will have specific
jurisdiction when the activities that gave rise to the case happened in the forum state and general
jurisdiction occurs when the activities that gave rise were unrelated to the forum state. Specific
jurisdiction is easier to find than general jurisdiction. Pennoyer v. Neff, 95 U.S. 714 (1878)
established four ways to attain general jurisdiction: 1) the defendant s presence in the forum state,
including corporations, 2) if the defendant is a domicile of the forum state, 3) if the defendant
consented to being sued in the forum state, and 4) Quasi in Rem (the suit of the thing), where

Business existed in the world since human beings were born. Back to Paleolithic Age, our

that the prices of goods were not always consistent, and it was very inconvenient to carry heavy
goods around. Therefore, people decided to use rare metals (such as bronze, silver and gold) as

manner that emulated a person following a series of logical instructions. The theory of Turing

There are many characters who are very important to the storyline in I, Claudius such as Livia,
Claudius, Augustus, Tiberius and Caligula. Not only does Graves depict the main character,
Claudius, clearly, but also deeply depict the characteristics of all the characters in the story. The
author create all of them as round characters. Round characters have multiple personality and
traits and are thus more like real people and are often not recognizable as stereotypes according
to the definition in the Writing Essays About Literature (Griffith 61). Livia is a good example
of a round character. Livia is described as cruel, ambitious and competent. Livia murders many
people in order to maintain her power in controlling Rome, Claudius, do you think that Livia
killed [your father]? I m sure of it (Graves 155). Livia is also different with other women at that
time and she is very ambitious. She has multiple personalities and she does not act according to
the stereotype. The personalities of Augustus is also fully developed. He is described as both a
ambitious and capable emperors but at the same time controlled by Livia. All the personalities
of most of the characters are described very clearly. After reading the book, the readers may feel
like they really know these characters in person since we know their personalities well.

Alter Public Space Research Paper
How does one alter public space? The altering of public spaces means to change the atmosphere
of a public area in either a positive or negative way. Some people alter public space based off
their appearance, and others with their actions. There are many ways to alter public space, and it
happens way more than one may realize. There are not many times in my life where I distinctly
remember altering public space, but there are a few significant times that stand out to me. The three
most pivotal and memorable experiences that I have had in which I altered public spaceare the
tornado on April 27, 2011, when I first moved to Alabama from Ohio, and when I went to a
camp in Colorado for 5 weeks. The most memorable of these three events is the 2011 tornado. I
remember watching the weather channel as it was spotted heading toward Tuscaloosa, only for
the power to go out minutes later. I remember going to the heart of the devastation that evening
and just walking around amazed as I looked around at what looked like a war zone at the time.
The very next day my family and I went out into devastated areas and handed out food and water
to those who lost their homes. It was in doing this that I can look back and notice how I altered...

Nixie is a camera in a small robot plain that it can be wearable camera as it fits around your wrist.
By Nixie you can take photos and videos from different height and control it by remote control.
The first Nixie prototype was built by Christophe Kohstall, after tinkering with a Quad copter that
he received as a gift. One of the main purpose of using Nixie is to improve the way of taking
photos. In addition, we can use Nixie in several applications such as in a rock climbing and
mountain biking, in that case you can take very interesting video during you doing these sports and
another adventure sports. Moreover, taking pictures for landmarks for example buildings,
archaeological and tourist sites. The Nixie camera encountered some problems in manufacturing in
first edition, but the developers solve these problems. There are two major problems that Nixie

Materialism In Alexander Pope And Pope s Rape Of The Lock
The views of women have altered over time, but have always had objectifying tendencies. During
the 18th century, cosmetic alteration to natural beauty peaked and materialism heightened
throughout societal views. Authors such as Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift vividly spew
these views throughout their writings. Pope s Rape of the Lock exposes the materialism used in
objectifying women, mainly in the upper class societal levels. The whole plot of the story centers
around a cosmetic appearance creating an objectified view, as since the lock of hair was cut from a
womans head, the missing lock became, so called, evidence of a man s sexual conquest. Other
sexual conquests, forced or not, are spoken with anything but love and only those of... Show more

This elevation highly represents the overall theme that materialism plays an almost biblical role
in society. The other way to analyze the list is that the Bibles are brought down to the very
materialistic level of the other listed cosmetics. Another aspect to note is that Bibles is plainly
listed, not the first or last mentioned item, but somewhere in the middle. Both ways conclude
that the cosmetic, material items compare at the same level as the Bible s paired along with
them. Another list comes with a comparison of paired items that contradict each other s
importance; ... Or stain her honor, or her new brocade,/ forget her prayers, or miss a masquerade,
/ Or lose her heart, or necklace, at a ball;... (Pope II 106 107). The first description used in each
line is something of importance, as staining honor, forgetting prayers or losing her heart all have
serious implications and consequences. But then those more serious actions are paired with trivial
material ones; staining a new brocade, missing a masquerade or losing a necklace at a ball. The
material actions paired with important ones really unify them as being on the same level of
importance. The contradiction is removed and materialism is elevated.
Objectification of women goes hand and hand with materialism. When Pope speaks of the sexual
conquests in The Rape of the Lock, he only focuses on the material aspects that result

The Long Telegram Analysis
In the wake of World War II, Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union delivered a largely
controversial speech in the Bolshoi theater located near the center of Moscow. In Stalin s speech, he
articulated upon the idea that Communism and Capitalism could not co exist. He claimed to the
people that the Soviet Unionwas the only key factor in eliminating the Axis powers from the war.
Only 13 days after Stalin s speech in Moscow, George Kennan s 8,000 word telegram was sent to
Washington D.C. This telegram discussed what Kennan believed Stalin s next move in Europe
would be. Kennan felt that Stalin would move to Iran and Turkey as its next targets. Also, this
telegram, nicknamed The Long Telegram contained Kennan s belief which was the only way to
help Eastern Europe was to provide financial aid so that these countries would not turn to
Communism because of their financial downfall. Not only did Stalin s speech land heavily upon
the U.S. but it also shocked England. On March 5th, 1946, Winston... Show more content on

On March 12th, 1947, Truman addressed a joint session of Congress, in this meeting, Truman
asked for $400,000,000 that he would need to aid both Greece and Turkey, to prevent Soviet
influence. This money given to both Greece and Turkey would assist these countries to rebuild their
governments. Truman called this plan the Truman Doctrine. In order to fulfill Truman s request, the
newly appointed Republican members of the house would have to contradict what they had been
elected to do; focus on domestic policy. This request also completely shifted the relationship
between the U.S. and the Soviet Union from one of friendship to one of containment. The U.S. had
to contain the Soviet Union so that its sphere of influence could not grow. Congress approved the
Truman Doctrine and granted Greece and Turkey $400,000,000 to rebuild their

Defining Feinberg s Offence Principle And Hate Speech By...
To answer the above question I will start by defining Feinberg s Offence Principle and explain
why it is proposed to help fill the potential gaps in Mill s Harm Principle. Then by using an
argument Mill himself used in On Liberty, I will attempt to show why I believe The Offence
principle actually goes to far. Feinberg advocates that the Harm Principle cannot shoulder all the
work necessary for the principle of free speech . He believes the Harm Principle does not go far
enough in protecting people. The law, he believes, needs to take into account serious offence, as
a key factor in determining what type of speech should be prohibited. Let us look at a brief
explanation of what this offence entails. To do this I have made use of the article Harm
Principle, Offence Principle and Hate Speech by R Cohen Almagor . In this article Cohen
Almagor begins by setting out that Feinberg uses the word offence in both a normative sense and
a general sense. Normative defined, as all of the miscellany of disliked mental states like disgust,
shame, hurt, anxiety and so on. General, in the sense that these states are caused by others
conduct. Feinberg postulates that offence takes place when (1) one suffers a disliked state, and
(2) one attributes that state to the wrongful conduct of others, and (3) one resents the other in his
role in causing one to be in that state . So simply put one can for example, be offended if one is
deeply hurt by another s speech. After he has defined

Gradkowski s Website Essay
When I run out of ideas of where to eat, it seems like I always find myself looking at websites of
restaurants near me. A restaurants website needs to stand out and invite a potential customer. The
atmosphere of the website should be similar to what the actual atmosphere is. A good website
should consist of three key things; a home page that captures the attention of a customer, a menu,
and a little bit about the restaurant. Gradkowski s is a new american style restaurant located on
campus at The University of Toledo. Some added features that Gradkowski s website has is
private dinning, event planning, friends, and reservations. The website has a lot of the
information people look for in a website like the hours, but it also is missing some as well.
Although Gradkowski s website lacks in some areas, it still does a good job attracting customers.
Gradkowski s has a unique layout starting with the home page. There are three things that stand out
on the home page. On the left side there is a grid of Facebook and twitter pictures from events...

there as well as the hours, number, and address. On the left is A Bit of Who We Are , which is a
paragraph that gives a very at home feel to it. The paragraph shows how much community means
to them and how much they respect the city of Toledo. Even if someone is from Toledo or not, it
still warms the heart and attracts customers. Under the paragraph is a quote from the owner of
Gradkowski s, Bruce Gradkowski. Bruce went to school at UT and played quarterback for the
Rockets while he attended. The quote shows how much he loves the city, his respect for its
people, and how he wants to give back to the community. Having a good story or background to a

Verisimilitude In The Misanthrope
Ali Schonhoff
Theatre History I
Dave Pasto
14 October 2015
The Misanthrope Consideration
1.Verisimilitude is the appearance of truth. It can be broken down into three parts:
a.Probability: how likely is it that these events could actually happen? To keep the plots of
neoclassic plays probable, playwrights removed supernatural and fantasy characters, the chorus, and
any soliloquy or aside where a character would speak directly to the audience and not to another
character. In MoliГЁre s play The Misanthrope, this can be seen right off the bat as Alceste
informs the audience of his love for CГ©limГЁne by discussing it with Philinte who here serves as
a confidant for Alceste to avoid using a soliloquy.
b.Morality: Neoclassic plays were meant to instruct and delight. Comedies should ridicule ... Show

Place: there should only be one setting for the entire play. The Misanthrope takes place entirely in
and around CГ©limГЁne s house, keeping the set unified.
c.Action: there should only be one plot. Plays should not have subplots unless they can only be
resolved by the resolution of the main plot. All the little love stories and scuffles of The
Misanthrope lead back to Alceste trying to win over CГ©limГЁne somehow or another. Nothing in
the play exists separate from this.
4.Purity of Genre: there should not be any serious scenes in a comedy, and no comedic scenes in
a tragedy. Comedies should primarily focus on the middle and lower classes ridiculing their
follies. MoliГЁre mostly follows this rule, except for at the end of The Misanthrope: his play
ridicules folly and is unarguably funny. However, comedies are generally known for their happy
endings, and this play just... doesn t have one of those. Our main character ends the show with
his decision to be a hermit as he did not win over his love or his rebound girl. The woman who
should have ended the show as his lover is called out as a whore and turns down Alceste s offer to
love her anyway which leaves her ultimately unhappy as

Rhetorical Analysis Of Pericles Speech
Pericles begins his speech with respect and impassivity while honoring the ancestors of Athens. I
shall begin with our ancestors, he explains, it is both just and proper that they should have the
honour of the first mention on an occasion like the present. They dwelt in the country without a
break in the succession from generation to generation, and handed it down free to the present time
by their value (Thucydides). When Periclesmentions the ancestors of the Athenians, he reels his
audience in and captures their attention. Athens is considered to be the most civilized society on
Earth at this time, but even so, the Athenians are very humble. When compared to their enemies,
such as the Spartans, Athens is much more advanced, humane, and... Show more content on

In generosity, we are equally singular, acquiring our friends by conferring, not by receiving,
favours (Thucydides). The claimed kind, favor oriented nature of Athens shown here must have
been a point of pride for the people. It contrasts against the militaristic nature of the Spartans and
the Persian Empire. This line earned praise from Pericles audience not because of his Athenian
audience, but because of the honor it gave to the fallen Athenian soldiers. At this point, Pericles
concludes his glorification of Athenian culture. In short, I say that as a city we are the school
of Hellas (Greece), while I doubt if the world can produce a man, who where he has only himself
to depend upon, is equal to so many emergencies, and graced by so happy a versatility, as the
Athenian. And that this is no mere boast thrown out for the occasion, but plain matter of fact, the
power of the state acquired by these habits proves (Thucydides). Pericles ties all of his
compliments together as if they were all one logical argument explaining Athenian superiority. His
final word on the topic was not a simple boast. He proved it with all of his speech so far. Finally,
Pericles holds authority and credibility in Athens as a

Louis Zamperini, the main character of Laura Hillenbrand s biography Unbroken, led a
promising running career in his life prior to his military service and captivity. In 1931, Louis
was encouraged to join the Torrance High School track team by his older brother, Pete. Running
came easily to Louis, and became a force to be reckoned with rapidly in the racing world,
dropping his mile time to just under five minutes by 1933. He gave some of the fastest men in the
country a scare at the 1936 Olympic Trials when he nearly beat Don Lash, America s fastest runner
of the 5,000 meter race, and proceeded to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Aside from the
resounding fame that his running career provided him, it also instilled discipline, dedication, and

according to a family account from Sylvia Zamperini, Pete and Louis were often engaged in
similar activities with the major difference being that Louie always got caught (Unbroken, page 8).
Shortly before he attended Torrance High School, Louis was caught allowing people into basketball
games through a rear entrance for free admission. This particular event earned him a ban from

Life In The Iron-Mills By Rebecca Harding Davis
The short story Life in the Iron Mills by Rebecca Harding Davis is about a town that centers
around an iron mill and the workers whose lives revolve around the mill. At the beginning of the
story, this becomes evident when the narrator says, The mills were deserted on Sundays, except
by the hands who fed the fires, and those who had no lodgings and slept usually on the ash heaps
(1715). The only day that there are not workers at the iron mill is on Sunday because most of
Sunday is spent at church. In the short story, Davis begins to suggest that there are strong, spiritual
elements throughout the story. Most people who think about God believe that God and faith can
bring those who are struggling out of the dark cloud that seems to be encompassing their lives.
That is how Davis is trying to show the role of the church and trying to show that the people in the
iron mill town need... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Davis argues that the Spirit of God is needed to liberate the poor iron workers from their
depression. The church is supposed to be able to lift up those who need help. In so doing, the story
examines a system that was being developed and used in the mid nineteenth century in which
churches created an infrastructure within their existing spiritual framework to be proactive,
organized, and responsible for the economic welfare of the poor.
Wolfe s story reveals why the solution to the social problem methods of charity is still veiled. In
the time period the story took place, middle and upper class people always felt so great about
themselves when giving money to the poor because they thought they were helping charity cases .
Now, and probably back in the time of the iron mills

Rhetorical Analysis Of Why English Is Not The National...
Introduction Many people have questioned why the United States does not have a national
language, and more specifically, why English is not the national language. Among these people is
Dennis Baron, who publishes his thoughts on this topic very often. One of his essays, considered a
proposal, is titled Don t Make English Official Ban It Instead and discusses a new way of
approaching English as the national language: banning English completely in America. Baron
examines other opinions and their flaws and then establishes contrasting points that are subtly
sarcastic. He is immensely effective in addressing his points and argument through the use of
various techniques. The author conveys his ideas not only through his words, but through... Show

knowledge of a specific allusion to make the intended connection (Lundin, 1). His first reference is
to A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift; Baron uses this to allow his readers to understand that his
proposal will be satirical. Baron alludes to the Garden of Eden twice throughout his proposal; both
times are to make the parallel between temptations in the Bible and the temptations of Americans.
Historical figures that Baron mentioned throughout his work were Roger Sherman, Ross Perot, and
William F. Buckley Jr. whom are all political figures that allow Baron s audience of legislatures to

Hastings, World War I and II, the American Revolution, the Louisiana Purchase, and the
Prohibition. Each of the events he references add context of time period and conflicts that may or
already have arisen from the problems that Baron is addressing. In order for his audience to

The Effects Of Xenophobia In South Africa
Introduction
I have often wondered whether I made the right choice. From time to time I have been met with
open hostility from black South Africans who clearly do not want people from other countries
around. I believe this form of xenophobia to be unique to South Africa. To my knowledge it is not
something to be found elsewhere in Africa.
(Tegegne, 2001: 94)
The deep hatred and dislike of African foreign nationals by some locals emanates largely from the
perception that foreigners are here to take jobs from locals, rendering most of the less educated
South Africans unable to acquire employment (Moatshe, 2014)
Nationalism by a section of eminent South Africans (e.g. King Goodwill Zwelithini on 21 March
2015 (Mwanza, 2015) and Edward, son of president Jacob Zuma on 14 April 2015 (Khoza, 2015))

Prior to 1994 the common enemy was apartheid. It was the glue that held together the resistance. A
fatalistic mentally, amongst a large sector of the South African population, was created which still
persists 22 years after democracy.
The tenets of citizenship and the nation have been reconstructed on a narrow, privileged, and
nationalistic basis, with a pernicious atmosphere being created, particularly through immigration
policies and the enforcement of an exclusive South Africa, creating the conditions for xenophobia to
take root. State institutions have been centrally involved in the abuse of foreign migrants, from
illegal arrests, renditions, torture, racial profiling, destruction of immigration documents and
general abuse (Amandla.org.za, 2015)
According to Lucien van der Walt, professor of Sociology at Rhodes University (Mwanza, 2015)
the enemy in post 1994 South Africa, has become the foreign nationals who present as soft targets
due to their much smaller numbers and lack of homogeneity. Most of the xenophobic attacks erupt

Midrash Definition
The Halakhah Judaism is not only a set of beliefs about God, the universe and man, but Judaism is
a comprehensive way of life. In Judaism there are rules and practices outlined for almost all day to
day activities and the manner in which Judaism believers must conduct themselves. These set of
rules and practices in Judaismare known as the Halakhah, which translated means to walk (Efron
pg. 144). However, in order for the Halakhah to emerge rabbis had to study the Torahand develop
their own ways of interpreting the Hebrew Bibleknown as midrash. Midrash is derived from a
Hebrew root meaning to seek or to investigate, midrash however is not an easy term to define
(Efron pg 143). The Midrash refers to a collection of rabbinic interpretations of the Bible and it
also describes the approach of interpretation reproduced in these collections. As the Midrash was
created there became two different forms rabbinic expression, which became known as the Halakah

By the time of the Babylonian Talmud, rabbinic sages had come to believe that the Torah
revealed to Moses had two forms, the written Torah and an oral Torah transmitted by the Sages
(Efron et al. pg. 144). The oral Torah consists of orally transmitted teachings of the elders
themselves. The oral Torah includes; legal debates, rulings, biblical interpretations, wise sayings
of the sort collected in Pirkei Avot and stories of the rabbis own exploits. The written Torah on the
other hand consists of the five books of Moses God gave to the Jews at Mt. Sinai. However, the
rabbis felt that the oral Torah was necessary, because from their perspective, the written Torah was
insufficient by itself the rabbis recognized that the written Torah contained too many gaps and
